About Gary W Skillestad Sr Owner/Manager

I've had a varied life as a commercial illustrator, childcare center owner, commercial fisherman, beverage salesman and small business entrepreneur. I'm also the father of four beautiful children and 6 and 2 year old granddaughters. And in the picture is my very special girlfriend, Mame.

Gary W Skillestad Sr Owner/Manager purchased this lodge in 2004

Why Gary W Skillestad Sr Owner/Manager chose Northwest

This property has the best view and the most desirable access to great fishing and hunting on Big Chip! Total wilderness across the lake and South. NO houses. You'll think you're in Canada. The Chequemagon National Forest will stay like this forever. Plus it's right on the snowmobile and ATV trails and fabulous ice fishing location. The American Birkebeiner is a blast! Think of the fun your group will save by having your own bar!

What makes this lodge unique

A huge deck, knotty pine construction, beautiful fireplace room, dock and great view make this place. Then there's the historic bar filled with pictures of days gone by. The great stereo system. Think of the money your group will save by having your own bar! Relax without feeling like you're on pins and needles around the furnishings. I still see something new there as I eat my breakfast and look out over Big Chip. Awesome. Moore's Bay fills with crappie, walleye and musky in the Fall. Everyone on the lake comes right out front of the Lodge for excellent fishing every Fall. There's ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling just out front. Then there's the American Birkebeiner Ski Race in February. Always something going on here.

Great experience!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of guys stay for a fishing trip. Gary was a great host and had everything we needed and more. The fish cleaning station worked wonderfully for cleaning up our daily catch of Walleye and crappie. We even landed a 43 inch musky which was the highlight of the trip. Another great part was, we never left Moore's bay. Lots of great fishing close by. I would definitely stay here again!

Excellent place for our large group to ice fish every year

  • 5 of 5

Cabin has fully stocked kitchen, plenty of sleeping room, located right on the water, and the bar is the center of our socializing every night after fishing. Gary the owner is very accommodating and will answer any questions you have.

Owner's Response: Thank you David for the great review. I'm working hard to make this place better all the time. Living next door helps. But like you said, with the water and the bar you can't help but have some fun. I appreciate meeting great people like your group. Take care and see you again!

Owner's Response: I live next door in Cabin One and I'm enjoying meeting the folks coming up. I never used to as I lived 450 miles South. All questions can be answered because I'm here and having fun to boot. Thanks for your love of this beautiful place in the Great Northwoods. I hope to see you this Summer!

it works well for big groups.

  • 4 of 5

The one thing you can never control is the weather. we happened to be there on the two hottest days 93 and 94 degrees. the place has one small window air unit.. a little warm. I understood there were other ac units available if we put them in for the owner, which we decided not to do. there were plenty of fans and the bar area is pretty cool. we had a great stay, everyone enjoyed the trip besides the heat. Gary is very friendly and welcoming.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Feedback is how I rank necessary improvements. During the summer there are cool nights here in northern Wisconsin. And a few warm ones. Usually we get by with the fans. The upstairs warms up more and I'm probably getting a window air conditioner for up there for sleeping. Until then get air flowing with those fans. I own the cabin next door now and I sleep with a fan going and windows open every night. I just moved from Illinois and I'm loving it! Hope to see you again.

Perfect Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This place had plenty of room for our recent family vacation! The place is a bit dated but was exactly as described by the owner, nothing was hidden. Access to society on your terms with Direct TV and WIFI comes included. Our family spent many hours conversing, dining and playing cribbage on the fabulous bar top while listen to the great stereo system. The Chippewa Flowage is serene, has great fishing even from the dock. The owner was very accommodating and friendly, he even took me Musky trolling for the first time in his boat! We will be back, thanks Gary!
