A peaceful retreat that you will want to return to again and again.

WE OFFER SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNTS OFF OF OUR DAILY RATES FOR FULL WEEK STAYS. The daily rates show on the availability calendar, but MOST times of the year, stay 7 nights for the price of six (or even 5, depending on season). Please scroll to bottom of description for weekly rates.

Featherbed Island House in downeast Maine is perfect for:

--WRITERS - it would be a grand space for a writing workshop

--BIRDERS - a true bird-watching paradise

The property is salt waterfront on an estuary where the river greets the ocean, a prime spot to observe eagles and seals and all that nature has to offer.

-PRIVATE ISLAND - Featherbed Island - just offshore - one acre (more or less), uninhabited but a frequent stop for eagles and seals and other shorebirds.

Welcome to Featherbed Island House. Our home is named after the tiny island just off-shore. At low tide, do your own mud-dash and bring your picnic to the island. The views are amazing. Our neighbors told us that it was once a summer camp location for Native Americans back in the day.

THE PROPERTY is about 3 acres of salt waterfront, abutting several acres of town owned forest. The 200+ feet of shorefront is on the estuary where the river greets the ocean. Much of the yard is rolling lawn - the house is one of the rare homes that have unobstructed views of the water. The yard is filled with blueberry and raspberry bushes, apple trees (with several different varieties of apples).

On the side of the house, is a tiny fresh-water pond which is a watering hole for all sorts of wildlife (keep your camera ready).

Rumor has it that the pirate, Captain Black Sam Bellamy buried his treasure somewhere in proximity to this very property! (But please, no digging!).

THE FARMHOUSE is very well designed to be both open, yet with plenty of private spaces - recently built, but using architectural salvage wherever possible from the cottage that once was on this very property .

-- GREAT ROOM - The highlight of the great room is it’s two story wall of windows overlooking Machias Bay and Featherbed Island. Our newest fun addition is a vintage stereo and selection of records which, we’ve been told, have been the highlight of the space.

—KITCHEN - the compact kitchen houses new Slate appliances (2017) - a fridge/freezer with ice maker, five-burner gas (propane) stove, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave. In early 2018, we will be adding new quartz countertops, as well as a custom made slate farmer’s sink.

—PANTRY - Besides the kitchen, off of the back hallway is an antique ‘cigar-box’ pantry that holds almost every small appliance that you can think of. Our selection does change as appliances wear out, but just to give you an idea — currently we have a blender, Kitchen Aid stand mixer, Margaritaville margarita maker, electric kettle, ice cream maker, Belgian waffle maker, shave-ice maker, citrus juicer, molcajete, lobster pot (of course) with lobster bibs and crackers. We also have pie plates, rolling pins, baking dishes, aprons and cookbooks!

—DINING ROOM - The dining area is another corner of the great room. There is a large farmhouse table that seats six comfortably under the soft glow of the antique chandelier. There are dishes and glassware for eight. Besides regular drinking glasses, we have an assortment of barware — martini, wine and margarita glasses.

-- THE MUSIC ROOM has french doors - left open to expand the living space of the great room, or closed for more separation. The music room holds a vintage wooden phonograph with a selection of 78 records (Dancing anyone? Waltz or perhaps a fox trot?). It also has several bookshelves with steamy (or not-so-steamy) novels, magazines and children’s books (and, of course several bird identification books) and a closet filled to the brim with board games and puzzles. There are several musical instruments if you have the talent (or even if you don’t). There is a loveseat that pulls out into a twin bed. There is also a radio/cd player and an assortment of cd’s.

-- COZY DEN in the back of the house has a flat screen television with a mid-level cable package and dvd player and library of about 100 DVD movies for kids and grownups.

—FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM - The first floor bathroom has a stall shower with a Speakman Reaction shower head and unique river-rock sink. It also houses the washer and dryer

-- MASTER BEDROOM - The master bedroom has a open window overlooking the great room to take advantage of the water views (there is black-out drapery for privacy). The bed is KING size and there are two closets, two small dressers and a comfy chair overlooking the pond. There is a SMART television (2018) . Note: this television does not currently get the full cable channel package.

QUEEN BEDROOM - This bedroom is in the front of the house, with it’s queen bed tucked under the eves. There is just enough room for a dresser and closet, with a little writing nook overlooking the bay.

TWIN BEDROOM - The final bedroom is also small - just enough room for a twin bed, dresser, chair and small closet.

UPSTAIRS BATHROOM - This bathroom has a shower/tub combination and a travertine, trough sink. The shower has a Speakman hotel shower head.

OTHER AMENITIES - wifi (as high-speed as we can possibly get in the area), hairdryer, iron and board, sewing kit, telescope, outdoor games - bocci, badminton, croquet, scavenger hunts, an art easel, quality sheets, fluffy duvets, boho quilts, pillow assortment, thirsty towels, soaps and shower amenities, eco-friendly laundry detergent (when available), rainy day activities for the itty-bitties - legos, indoor bowling, high-chair, charcoal ‘park-style’ outdoor grill, firepit and adirondack chairs, outdoor picnic table.

Our property is a CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER IN HOSPITALITY; and also certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITAT - a perfect spot for birders and all nature lovers. We are also located within a Machiasport significant critical habitat for shorebirds. . We are also certified by the American Vacation Rental Owners Association (AVROA).

Machiasport is the idyllic central location as the home base for your bold coast Maine vacation.

Featherbed Island House is perfectly placed for day tripping to:

-- Bar Harbor (90 minutes),

-- Acadia National Park (90 minutes)

-- artsy Eastport and Lubec (45 minutes)

-- Campobello Island (45 minutes)

--Bold Coast Trail in Cutler (30 minutes)

-- St. Stephen, NB - Canada,s chocolate town (90 minutes)

and all of the coves and fishing villages in between.

There is no need to fight the summer crowds in Bar Harbor!

Relax in the casual elegance of the Featherbed Island House in down east Maine - far from the crowds but near enough to everything fantastic.

All of our property is smoke-free (except for the fire-pit, of course).

About Maria Lamb - Wicked Awesome Maine Vacation Rentals

I own and operate Wicked Awesome Maine Vacation Rentals.

Besides Featherbed Island House, I currently own waterfront vacation rental cottages in Bucks Harbor, Maine (Budget friendly -

The Frisky Fish) and Phinney Cove, Nova Scotia (unplugged -Saltbrook on the Bay).

I LOVE being a host for vacation rental cottages. I've owned vacation rentals since 2003 and love helping to make someone's vacation special, whether it be suggesting a special restaurant, fulfilling a special request, or just being reachable to answer questions. I try to make all of my rental locations full of special touches and personal treasures.

Why Maria Lamb - Wicked Awesome Maine Vacation Rentals chose Machiasport

Just drive up the driveway and take a look and you'll know. Oh, you'll know.

What makes this house unique

Machiasport is the ideal central location in downeast Maine. We've found that the Bar Harbor and the Acadia area are much too crowded especially in summer and fall, and southern Maine has sadly become suburbia. Machiasport is a idyllic retreat - the REAL Maine - the Maine with character - and it's perfectly located. The central location is perfect for day trips everywhere from the mid-coast to bold-coast without having to deal with the crowds. Featherbed Island House is very private, yet still minutes away from the local wine/cheese/craft beer store, natural food store and cafe, and other restaurants and shops.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Maria,

Sadly we left the house last night so we

could be home by morning. I want to tell you

how much we really enjoyed our stay in your

magical house. We were sad to leave...all of us.

Everyone in our family had such a beautiful, relaxing

time. We will never forget our stay at the Featherbed Island House! Everything was perfect

and we felt like home there! Our dog, Katie,

loved it there was so much more to sniff!

We are back to our reality now... but being there for

this past week re-energized us. We will never forget

the view, the sun, the breeze and all of nature that

was right before our eyes...the bald eagle almost every day, and yesterday was even closer that we

got a better picture of him!

Thank you for opening your house to us! You have

quite a special place there and we hope to visit again soon!

Wonderfully cozy Christmas and New Year stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful eleven days over Christmas and New Year at this beautiful property! The northeast was engulfed in a deep freeze, but the house itself was wonderfully warm. Our children (10, 8 and 6) loved having the property grounds to themselves for sledding, playing in the snow, checking out the ice in the cove, and finding animal tracks. We loved the house, in particular for it's beautifully equipped kitchen and outstanding views. Lots of great books, music and games also supplied.

Machias has some great places to visit (Helen's Restaurant, Whole Life Cafe and Food, and the French Cellar), and the area in general had plenty of good day trips despite the winter weather (the stunning Acadia National Park, the Roque Bluff State Park, the West Quoddy Lighthouse and State Park, and Cobscook Bay).

Owner Maria was very quick and easy to communicate with.

Would love to stay here again if we could - a truly memorable place to celebrate our first ever white Christmas.

Nature Lovers Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Peaceful and full of natures surprises. Greeted by eagles and great blue herons every morning and had a special visit by a doe and her two fawns walking on the beach right in front of the lawn... just beautiful. If you are looking to get away from it all, while still being connected (wifi) this is the place. Downtown has all the amenities that you need and is just 10 minutes away.

Now I want to move to Maine!

  • 5 of 5

Quite possibly the most perfect rental on VRBO. The pantry contained LITERALLY every imaginable appliance. Gorgeous, relaxing surroundings. Definitely for groups who can make their own fun & enjoy each other's company as there's not a ton to do in Machias / Machiasport but once we checked into the house nobody wanted to leave anyway!
