About the property

Restored Victorian Brick With 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths In Beautiful Pastoral Setting

Originally the farmhouse for a 120 acre estate, The Captain’s House* is a very private 4 bedroom 2 bath brick Victorian shaded by 100 year old Sugar Maples and Lilacs. Built in 1875 and lovingly restored by the heirs of the estate, the Captain’s House is just 1.5 K from a beautiful Lake Ontario beach and within a few minutes of 15 different wineries. This all season retreat is ideal for families, beach lovers, cyclists, golfers, equestrians, wine enthusiasts, antique collectors, bird watchers, hunters, fishermen, boaters, cross country skiers, art lovers and those who enjoy fine cuisine. As you enter, you walk over two ancient gristmill stones that harken back to older days. The front veranda and the rooms inside have beautiful views of tranquil pastures, a Century Barn and distant views of Huyck’s Bay. Once inside, you find hardwood floors, tall ceilings and spacious rooms typical of the era. The living room features large airy windows, an upright piano and a collection of interesting antiques and artifacts from the original estate. There is also a comfortable double sofa bed for those who might have trouble navigating the stairs to the second floor bedrooms. Adjoining the living room is a formal dining room with the original dining table that seats 8 very comfortably. Adjoining that is a very well equipped kitchen with brand new appliances, countertops and cupboards along with everything you need to prepare meals for the gourmet or the gourmand. In the next room, your children will find privacy and everything they need to entertain themselves including satellite TV, Wi-Fi, a CD player, board games, air hockey and just outside, badminton & croquet. Completing the downstairs is a full four-piece bath with porcelain tile floors and a large washer and dryer. Upstairs, there are four charming bedrooms—two with double beds and two with queen beds—all with original wide plank pine floors and tasteful décor. There is also a four-piece bath with porcelain tile floors and brand new fixtures. Outside, the grounds are landscaped and the shady patio has a BBQ, a table with seating for eight and is host to many species of birds that flock to the feeders.

All in all, the Captain’s House harkens back to another time when peace and tranquility were the rule. Not the exception.

Not suitable for events or business activities.

*The Legend of The Captain’s House. In 1874, there was a terrible storm on Lake Ontario that sank many boats and washed many things ashore. Soon after the storm subsided, two farmers who then owned the property were walking along their beachfront and saw what appeared to be a large wooden door with something lashed to it. That something proved to be a man, long drowned and unrecognizable, who was wearing a Captain’s uniform the pockets of which were stuffed with gold coins. The farmers respectfully relieved the Captain of his burden and ceremoniously set him adrift once again thinking a burial at sea was the proper thing to do. And besides, why waste the money. So they used it to build two very fine houses. One of which is now called The Captain’s House.

About Vic and Kathy Alyea

I was raised on this farm. My parents bought it in 1948 when I was two and started a dairy farm. Later, after getting my BA and MA at Queen’s University, I started a long career as an educator and was the principal at elementary schools around the County. However, I loved my parent’s house so much that I built an architectural copy of it right down the road where I raised a family of my own. Even though I have lived in Scotland and traveled all over the world—Antarctica, Australia, Africa, Europe, South America-- I am always drawn back to the County and am an active member of the community where I have served as a Municipal Councillor, Chairman of the Finance and Property committee at my church and a participant in many volunteer activities. I am an avid reader, film buff and a student of Genealogy, Victorian architecture and local history. Last year, my dad passed away and we decided to refurbish the Captain’s House and lease it out to vacationers who would appreciate this kind of property.

Vic and Kathy Alyea purchased this estate in 1948

Why Vic and Kathy Alyea chose Prince Edward County

When I was a kid, I loved it here. There was great fishing, hiking, swimming, hunting, and I could ride my bike all over the place or walk along the beach early in the morning and not see another person. It’s still that way today. But what has changed is that the County has become far more sophisticated. Now along with great beaches and beautiful country, there are great restaurants, art galleries, wineries, gourmet food shops, music festivals, film festivals, county fairs—you name it, the County’s got it and it’s all just minutes away from where I live. To me, it’s the best of both worlds.

What makes this estate unique

There’s a special feeling about staying in a Historic Century home. With its idyllic country setting on 120 acres of property and a short ten-minute walk to a very private beach, it’s a great place to get away from it all. And if you don’t want to get away from it all? In ten minutes, you can drive to the lovely village of Wellington where you will find very fine restaurants rated by many as the best in the County. The Drake Hotel from Toronto has, recently opened their Inn and restaurant - a must try! Also, there is an LCBO, a grocery, drug store, second hand clothing shop, art galleries, library, golf, tennis, boat rentals and excellent fishing for salmon, pickerel, bass and pike. Or, if you have a taste for wine, there are over 15 wineries right nearby along with North Beach Provincial Park — just 5 minutes away and a great place for swimming, kite boarding, or just soaking up the sun. Forty minutes away, you can be at Sandbanks and picnic on its famous dunes and beaches. Picton with a population of 5,000, has lots of interesting shops, museums, fine restaurants ( Portabella, Merrill Inn, Acoustic Grill, Waring House Pub, Beck and Call are a few of our faves) gourmet food stores, a movie theatre, classic pubs, library and a very fine bookstore. Don't forget our Drive Inn on County Road 1, definitly an experience! Bloomfield is a mecca for shopping along with The Agrarian, The Hub or Saylor's Cafe for a bite to eat.

A Perfect Weekend

  • 5 of 5

1875 Captain's House was everything we could have hoped for. It's proximity to beaches, wineries, and little towns in the County make it the perfect location to do everything you could possibly want to do. The house itself is very spacious, clean and comfortable with a beautiful big lawn to play around on. The kitchen is very well stocked with good equipment and utensils, which made cooking a breeze. We hope to stay at Captain's House again sometime.

Beautiful heritage property!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you, Kathy and Vic. What a beautiful well-kept property you have. We feel so fortunate to have found this house in Prince Edward County. Perfect location in relation to the venue for our son's wedding closeby. Spotless and up-to-date with all new appliances, cabinetry, very comfortable beds, lots of dishes, towels, little extras which were not expected, and so tastefully decorated. We had everything we could ask for during our two-night stay. Vic greeted us upon our arrival and gave us a tour, addressing any concerns we might have, even recommending a good restaurant up the road for great pizza. We walked to the beach about a kilometre down the road and this area is surrounded by vineyards and many great wineries to visit. We could not have asked for more. We were pleased to briefly meet Kathy before our departure. We loved staying at The 1875 Captain's House and will definitely consider it again for future events in this area.

Excellent Choice with lots of activities and flexibility

  • 5 of 5

After much deliberation, I chose the 1875 captain's house for a small family reunion - a few couples and some kids, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Vic and Kathy are very professional and the property is kept in excellent shape. The house itself has all the amenities you could want. We especially enjoyed the multitude of locations in which to relax or hold conversations - some of us would sit in the cottage chairs on the front porch, some in the living room, some on the side porch near the basketball net. The basketball net is on a small concrete court and was a huge hit with the kids. One of the rooms is kept stocked with basketball, soccer ball, multiple croquet sets, badminton, horseshoes, and some other games. The garage has some bikes that we also made use of as well. Inside, there are plenty of books and magazines and local brochures to browse. In addition, there are two walks that I would definitely recommend: one along the road to an excellent and quiet beach - great for those groups where some want to walk and some want to drive (that's what we did). Also, there's a 'farm lane' in another direction which is a wide grass road leading towards the water in another direction - this one has cornfields on one side and fields on the other, with a couple of apple trees along the way.

The place is extraordinarily quiet. The closest town is about 10min away by car - we ended up checking it out on Saturday morning and there was a great little farmer's market where we picked up bags of pristine apples for ridiculously low prices. There's also a pile of wineries nearby - we chose one and had a little tour of the premises, which was also great. That nearest town has a couple of little cafes as well that were popular, and a little beach of its own with a small boardwalk and lighthouse to walk to.

That said, we only spend an hour or 90min in town because the whole group of us (9 people) wanted to get back to the cottage to play some more basketball or sit on the porch and chat while drinking local wine and staring out over the cornfields. This website is limiting the length of my review; otherwise I would write more about the things to do (or not, and just relax and take it all in). All in all, Vic and Kathy's cottage made up the best weekend we've had in a long time. A short weekend here did wonders for us - kids and adults alike. I'm thinking we need to make this an annual event.

A true country retreat

  • 5 of 5

I reluctantly write this review, as I selfishly don't want to limit my ability to book the Captain's House in future! Hosts, Vic & Kathy, maintain a very high standard of care for this property. Not only are they super likeable, but from the kitchenware to the well-appointed bedrooms and linens, they truly care about the little details. They go above and beyond to ensure the best quality vacation in the county - including taking our visitors on a tour through the fields. The property and its vicinity easily accommodate a small quiet retreat or a celebration for 10.
