Originally the farmhouse for a 120 acre estate, The Captain’s House* is a very private 4 bedroom 2 bath brick Victorian shaded by 100 year old Sugar Maples and Lilacs. Built in 1875 and lovingly restored by the heirs of the estate, the Captain’s House is just 1.5 K from a beautiful Lake Ontario beach and within a few minutes of 15 different wineries. This all season retreat is ideal for families, beach lovers, cyclists, golfers, equestrians, wine enthusiasts, antique collectors, bird watchers, hunters, fishermen, boaters, cross country skiers, art lovers and those who enjoy fine cuisine. As you enter, you walk over two ancient gristmill stones that harken back to older days. The front veranda and the rooms inside have beautiful views of tranquil pastures, a Century Barn and distant views of Huyck’s Bay. Once inside, you find hardwood floors, tall ceilings and spacious rooms typical of the era. The living room features large airy windows, an upright piano and a collection of interesting antiques and artifacts from the original estate. There is also a comfortable double sofa bed for those who might have trouble navigating the stairs to the second floor bedrooms. Adjoining the living room is a formal dining room with the original dining table that seats 8 very comfortably. Adjoining that is a very well equipped kitchen with brand new appliances, countertops and cupboards along with everything you need to prepare meals for the gourmet or the gourmand. In the next room, your children will find privacy and everything they need to entertain themselves including satellite TV, Wi-Fi, a CD player, board games, air hockey and just outside, badminton & croquet. Completing the downstairs is a full four-piece bath with porcelain tile floors and a large washer and dryer. Upstairs, there are four charming bedrooms—two with double beds and two with queen beds—all with original wide plank pine floors and tasteful décor. There is also a four-piece bath with porcelain tile floors and brand new fixtures. Outside, the grounds are landscaped and the shady patio has a BBQ, a table with seating for eight and is host to many species of birds that flock to the feeders.
All in all, the Captain’s House harkens back to another time when peace and tranquility were the rule. Not the exception.
Not suitable for events or business activities.
*The Legend of The Captain’s House. In 1874, there was a terrible storm on Lake Ontario that sank many boats and washed many things ashore. Soon after the storm subsided, two farmers who then owned the property were walking along their beachfront and saw what appeared to be a large wooden door with something lashed to it. That something proved to be a man, long drowned and unrecognizable, who was wearing a Captain’s uniform the pockets of which were stuffed with gold coins. The farmers respectfully relieved the Captain of his burden and ceremoniously set him adrift once again thinking a burial at sea was the proper thing to do. And besides, why waste the money. So they used it to build two very fine houses. One of which is now called The Captain’s House.

Year Purchased: 1948
About the owner: I was raised on this farm. My parents bought it in 1948 when I was two and started a dairy farm. Later, after getting my BA and MA at Queen’s University, I started a long career as an educator and was the principal at elementary schools around the County. However, I loved my parent’s house so much that I built an architectural copy of it right down the road where I raised a family of my own. Even though I have lived in Scotland and traveled all over the world—Antarctica, Australia, Africa, Europe, South America-- I am always drawn back to the County and am an active member of the community where I have served as a Municipal Councillor, Chairman of the Finance and Property committee at my church and a participant in many volunteer activities. I am an avid reader, film buff and a student of Genealogy, Victorian architecture and local history. Last year, my dad passed away and we decided to refurbish the Captain’s House and lease it out to vacationers who would appreciate this kind of property.
Why the Owner Chose Prince Edward County, ON, Canada:
When I was a kid, I loved it here. There was great fishing, hiking, swimming, hunting, and I could ride my bike all over the place or walk along the beach early in the morning and not see another person. It’s still that way today. But what has changed is that the County has become far more sophisticated. Now along with great beaches and beautiful country, there are great restaurants, art galleries, wineries, gourmet food shops, music festivals, film festivals, county fairs—you name it, the County’s got it and it’s all just minutes away from where I live. To me, it’s the best of both worlds.
The Unique Benefits at this Estate:
There’s a special feeling about staying in a Historic Century home. With its idyllic country setting on 120 acres of property and a short ten-minute walk to a very private beach, it’s a great place to get away from it all. And if you don’t want to get away from it all? In ten minutes, you can drive to the lovely village of Wellington where you will find very fine restaurants rated by many as the best in the County. The Drake Hotel from Toronto has, recently opened their Inn and restaurant - a must try! Also, there is an LCBO, a grocery, drug store, second hand clothing shop, art galleries, library, golf, tennis, boat rentals and excellent fishing for salmon, pickerel, bass and pike. Or, if you have a taste for wine, there are over 15 wineries right nearby along with North Beach Provincial Park — just 5 minutes away and a great place for swimming, kite boarding, or just soaking up the sun. Forty minutes away, you can be at Sandbanks and picnic on its famous dunes and beaches. Picton with a population of 5,000, has lots of interesting shops, museums, fine restaurants ( Portabella, Merrill Inn, Acoustic Grill, Waring House Pub, Beck and Call are a few of our faves) gourmet food stores, a movie theatre, classic pubs, library and a very fine bookstore. Don't forget our Drive Inn on County Road 1, definitly an experience! Bloomfield is a mecca for shopping along with The Agrarian, The Hub or Saylor's Cafe for a bite to eat.
