Vintage home built in 1900, named Captain's Quarters in memory of my late husband, Riverboat Captain Mark W. Peters, who piloted the paddlewheeler Hiawatha, on the Mississippi River and gave guided tours on Lake Pepin. This is how the 3 bedrooms came to be named. The Mississippi Room consists of a vintage style queen bed, electric fireplace and a private balcony. The Lake Pepin Room has a vintage style queen size bed and electric fireplace. The Hiawatha Room features a full size vintage bed and electric fireplace. All three bedrooms have ceiling fans. In addition to the electric fireplaces and ceiling fans the home has forced air heat and central air. Robes, towels, a shower mat and an extra blanket have been conveniently placed in each bedroom closet. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and a free standing soaking tub. On the main floor there is a washer and dryer available. The kitchen is fully equipped with an eat-in dinette and breakfast counter. It also includes a full size refrigerator with ice maker, range, dishwasher, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, mixer, slow cooker, and all the utensils and cookware needed to prepare if you prefer to eat in. The dining room features a round oak table, gas fireplace, and French doors that open to a wraparound deck which has a charcoal BBQ grill, table and chairs. Living room has a flat screen TV with cable and Blu Ray Player. There is also a three season porch with board games, puzzles, books, electric fireplace, and VCR player to watch those classic movies. Outside there is a small backyard patio and fire pit, bean bag toss, yard Yahtzee and four vintage style bicycles available for your bike riding pleasure. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of a small town in a quiet neighborhood with off street parking. Your visit may be filled with antiquing, wine tasting at area wineries, cruising aboard the Pearl of the Lake, visiting the National Eagle center, golfing on one of the many golf courses, skiing or snowshoeing in the winter. A complimentary home-made treat is available to my guests as well as coffee, tea or hot chocolate for relaxing on the deck or in front of the fireplace, a perfert way to end your day. My goal at Captain's Quarters is to make you feel welcome and comfortable and that when you leave you take a new memory to add to your life's journey.
3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, comfortably sleeps 5.

About Denise Peters
With the exception of a few years after high school graduation, I am a lifelong Lake City resident. I attended schools in the area and after completion of post secondary education, I worked in the health care system in Lake City for several years, before retiring in 2010. I continue to live here in Lake City with my current husband Lyle, also a long time Lake City resident, enjoying retirement together.
Denise Peters purchased this House in 1987
Why Denise Peters chose Lake City
This home was purchased by myself and my late husband Mark in 1987. This was our hometown and we loved the area. Mark served in the U.S. Coast Guard and loved being on the water so it was only natural we remained close to the river and the lake. We made a decision to remain here to raise our two children.
What makes this House unique
The house attracted us because it was affordable. Mark and I were young, in our 20's and we were looking forward to owning our first home. The main attraction for us was the location, the age of the house, its wood floors and the openess of the living room and dining room. As time went on during the recession of the 80's we appreciated the fact that we had a home, these were some hard times. We settled in and added our own touches. The house is very old but exudes a feeling of warmth. After Mark died in 1995 our children and I remained here. I chose to keep our home after they were grown. Welcoming guests and sharing a home filled with memories has been enjoyable. What I love most about my home is who I share it with. When I'm not sharing my home with you it is often used by myself and children for much reminiscing. I have opted to accent it with vintage and antique items some from childhood, others found through my passion for collecting. Lyle and I meet all our guests at check in. We share information about the area and answer any questions you may have. Because we own and operate, you never have to deal with a property manager, we do it all. We live in Lake City and are just a text or phone call away.

Cozy place for a restful getaway
This a beautifully decorated house, which is also cozy and well located. Denise had made pumpkin bread for us and provided many chocolates and snacks, all of which we appreciated. It's clean and very comfortable. We would definitely love to come back!
Thank you for your wonderful house. It met all our needs for our weekend away.
Thank you for your kind words. Our goal is to make Captain's Quarters your home away from home and we are glad we could do that for you. Thank you for choosing Captain's Quarters, we look forward to seeing you again.

Loved the house, but beware of hidden fees
This is one of the cutest VRBO’s I’ve ever seen! You can tell the owners have gone to great lengths to make visitors feel at home. For example, they have fresh flowers in almost every room, slippers for your use, etc. They included a welcome box of goodies and had (amazing!) banana bread waiting for us that paired perfectly with morning coffee. They even had a birthday cupcake in the fridge, since they knew we were celebrating my friends’ special day.
The disappointment came days before we were set to arrive. I received an email saying that the amount we paid via VRBO only covered one bedroom. If we wanted access to a second bedroom, it was going to cost extra and we’d have to bring cash or check upon arrival. In my request for reservation note, I said I was coming with my friend from college to celebrate her birthday and I made the request months in advance. The fact the VRBO listing made no mention of the additional bedroom cost and the fact that I made the request months in advance, but was not alerted to the extra charge until days before check in was extremely disappointing.
Additionally, upon check in and without prior notice, I was forced to provide my personal credit card information to the owner. He said it was for damages purposes. While, of course, there were no damages, it made me uncomfortable.
Thank you for your informative review of Captain's Quarters. We do enjoy providing that comfortable environment for anyone who may wish to have quiet time with friends or family. It is unfortunate, the information about the added fee for use of a second bedroom was not realized by you until shortly before your arrival. This information was emailed to you on September 1st. It is also pointed out in our on line listing information the added fee for use of a second or third bedroom. This is why we email the list of Frequently Asked Questions to our guests, also sent to you on September 1st which includes requiring a credit card as a security/damage deposit. This has been our policy since we started renting Captain's Quarters 5 years ago, during this time we have not experienced guests not aware of this or "feeling forced " to provide this information. It was unfortunate for you that you did not notice this until checkin October 19th. We are glad you did enjoy your stay.

Another great stay
Denise and Lyle have created an escape. A comfortable home away from home with all of the amenities and thoughtful touches of staying with family. My mom, sister, and I enjoyed our 2nd annual trip and we will be back!
Thank you for choosing Captain's Quarters. We are greatful for your kind comments and return visits. Denise & Lyle
Small Town Hospitality
What a great find! We were traveling to Lake City for a long weekend to visit old friends. Since we travel for business and are too familiar with hotel rooms, we generally rent Home Away when we travel for pleasure. Being just a 3 day stay, limited our resources.
We stumbled over The Captain's Quarters and they were available for a 3 day rental. What a great find! The home is lovely, tastefully updated, with touches of yesteryear around every corner. The home was more than adequate for my husband and I and there would be room for another couple as well. While it is just one bath, the bathroom is large, and with some timing, two can get ready at the same time just fine. The bedrooms are all upstairs so it may not be suitable if you have difficulty with stairs. The master bedroom is large, with a little walk out balcony. We didn't take time to enjoy coffee on the balcony, but it looked like a great place to do so. The bed was comfy, a little softer than we prefer, but still very nice. The linins in both the bath and bedroom are of good quality, soft and fluffy. We slept like babies in this quiet location. The kitchen is equipped for a stay of longer duration, and there were nice treats (pleasant surprise) in a welcome basket when we arrived. Denise and Lyle checked on us a couple of times via text to be sure we had everything we needed.
The location is great! You are just a couple of minutes from the lake, down town, the grocery store, and Patton Park. You can walk to any of these, as well as local shops and restaurants too.
If you are looking for a cozy, clean and comfortable place to stay, The Captain's Quarters will fill the bill.
Sandra & Spencer,

Back in time
Enjoyed all the vintage pieces throughout the house. My mom kept saying remember this. Some pieces I did and some were way before my time. LOL Beds were very comfortable. We were visiting family at the Mayo Clinic/Bluffs senior living and Denise's home was very convenient for us. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us.
Thank you for staying with us. We love sharing our home. It is good to know the vintage pieces are enjoyed. We hope to see you again. Denise & Lyle
This vacation rental property was purchased in 1987 by myself and late husband as our first home to raise our family. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, off the busy highways, a short walking distance from the downtown area, which features a wide selection of shops, eating establishments and bars; and only minutes from the marina, the city's beautiful parks, and the exceptional lakeshore. If you are looking for a longer walk, with a view to boot, you can access the river walk. Starting downtown, the river walk extends north to south, following the breathtaking lake scenery along the entire walkway. Enjoy wine? Try locally made wines at Lake Pepin Winery just a short drive away!
