White Mountain Four Season Retreat with 11 Rooms and 11 Bathrooms
Suzi Preston has owned and operated the Mountain Fare Inn since 1982! Her and her husband Nick have close ties to the ski community as Nick has been the Director of Freestyle Skiing at the Waterville Valley Academy for 35 years. They are avid outdoor enthusiasts, and love hosting people from all over the world at their classic New England B&B. Numerous Olympians frequent the Mountain Fare Inn to come and train at the near by ski resorts. Ask about their 'ski celebrity' alumni guests.
In the 1830’s the property was a Pemi Valley subsistence homestead in a rural community surrounded by logging, hunting, trapping and trading, river commerce and eventually railroads. It has a long history as a guest house dating to the early 1900s when travelers came by train to the White Mountains for the summer. At one point the local telephone exchange operated out of this building. When Mount Tecumseh (Waterville Valley Ski Area) was developed into a major eastern ski Area in 1960, the Thompson family renovated the attached barn into guest rooms and a dining room and proceeded to run a full service Lodge to skiers passing by on the Old Waterville Road.
Our secondary structure, The Carriage House (The Barn), was an old barn that was renovated beginning in 1989. With its three spacious guest rooms and warm, inviting game room it is a favorite gathering venue for groups of friends or families during ski season, weddings, graduations or for summer hiking trips.

About Susan Preston
Susan and Nick Preston have owned, enjoyed and stewarded the Mountain Fare property in Campton since 1982. They came to the area in 1980 as freestyle ski coaches for the Waterville Valley Ski Club and proceeded to raise two boys and run two businesses – Mountain Fare and Freestyle America, a summer freestyle training program that operates out of Whistler, BC, Mount Hood, Lake Placid and Waterville Valley to this day.
Susan Preston purchased this Hotel in 1982
Why Susan Preston chose Campton
Nick and Susan have owned and stewarded Mountain Fare since 1982! They actually 'landed' here by coincidence. As young ski coaches at Waterville Valley Resort they rented rooms here (then called Anderson's Inn) in 1980 and '81. It was a run down, abused, beautiful old building that no one took care of but just had its own will to survive. In 1981 it was for sale. They realized that it had been a favorite full service Inn for skiers on the road in and out of Waterville Valley in the 1970's. It actually served as a guest house dating back to the turn of the century when the trains from Boston stopped in Campton. It was built around 1830 as a Pemi Valley farm in logging, trapping and trading country. It was actually the beautiful land and location that lured the Preston's into buying the property. The historic building was daunting with 37 broken windows and only one out of 8 baths working. The Preston's needed a place to live and another income since skiing was seasonal. They proceeded to slowly renovate the Inn and created our summer Freestyle Ski Training programs called Freestyle America.

Perfect setting for a ski retreat!
We were a large group of friends coming from Boston for our first visit to this Inn. Susan went out of her way both before and during our stay to accommodate our needs and desires for the trip. She and her staff welcomed us warmly and we were thrilled to discover the inn was even more lovely than the pictures suggest. Everyone in our group was able to enjoy their own private space while being close to everyone else for spending time together. With a diverse and unique number of rooms, there was something in each room to appeal to everyone one. The inn was a quick 10 min drive from the ski slopes, so it was extremely convenient for our time on the slopes. Finally we'd be remise not to mention the fantastic breakfast spread Susan and her staff put on for us each morning. The food was excellent and it was immensely helpful not to have to worry about breakfast in the mornings so we could all sleep in or hit the slopes early as we saw fit. We highly recommend this place and will be looking forward to coming back again ourselves.
