Space 2,400 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Spectacular Views When You Live Above The Clouds, City Lights Below.

Volare seems perched to fly - city lights and rainforest below. This area is the original adventure capital of Costa Rica, and the crown jewel -- the Pacuare River, is accessed from here. World Class adventure (National Geographic lists the Pacuare as one of the top 10 white water rivers of the world). Pristine nature. Costa Rica's only pre Colombian ruins. Cloud forest and exotic birding. Active Turrialba volcano - (much more active than Arenal, in the tourism center of Fortuna), Hiking in Indigenous territories, where you encounter people who speak only their native Cabecar language Immaculately clean waterfalls.

Volare is high above the city, and cool air makes Volare pure pleasure day and night.

Yet Volare is on a good quality paved road only 45 minutes from TerraMall, the country's second largest shopping center on the east side of San Jose.

We offer a full service option (at additional cost), with daily cleaning and meal preparation from a menu both eclectic and interesting that accommodates dietary restrictions or your personal favorites.

3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, office in house. Very private but not isolated. Can be serviced daily by our employees.

About Tucker Comstock

I founded Serendipity Adventures, Costa Rica's most respected adventure operating company, in 1991, and I designed and built Volare on the most beautiful piece of land I had encountered in all of Cost Rica (but I admit I am very partial to grand vistas, clouds, and cooler temperatures - I suffer at the beach). When I sold Serendipity in 2011 I thought I would retire gracefully in Volare -- but all great plans somehow get sidetracked.

I fell in love. And now I live with my partner on a ranch in the northern part of Costa Rica.

But Volare is too much a part of my passion to just sell it, so I thought sharing it through rental would be a good compromise.

And besides, the staff at Volare love the way we entertain guests and friends, ith dinners on the terrace under the giant roof, overlooking the city below.

Tucker Comstock purchased this house in 2001

Why Tucker Comstock chose Turrialba

This small part of Costa Rica is pretty untouched by commercial tourism, by big industry, by noisy traffic and crime. Volare has an even greater advantage - not on the road, but tucked behind a hill, so someone on the paved road in front won't even know we are here.

What makes this house unique

The openness of the house -- walls won't block you in. The deck is integrated into the interior space, and the doors are rarely shut during the day.

The clouds. You can sit on the deck all day and watch the changing scenery. You can watch clouds form and ascend, or roll over the mountain behind the house and fall like thistledown into the valley.

Only 50 minutes from world class shopping, only 40 minutes from primitive Indigenous villages, only 10 minutes from the departure for the Pacuare. Loads of private adventure and nature opportunities. An active volcano. Pristine waterfall.

We in Volare are here for your benefit, to book tours or arrange meals or design your whole vacation (we have lots of experience with that).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Volare is absolutely amazing! The pictures do not do it justice. I've never seen a home like this - it is truly in the clouds. The view is spectacular. Tucker, Alexandra, Yami, and Franklin were fantastic hosts - friendly and helpful when you needed them, but we still had plenty of privacy. I highly recommend this home for an authentic Costa Rican vacation. MUSTS: take a river rafting trip on the Pacuare, sit in the elevated outdoor hot tub and watch the sunset, do a zip line tour, have Yami cook a meal for you, light a fire and sit on the balcony and watch the clouds float by you, and drive up to the Turrialba volcano.

SUGGESTIONS: Rent a 4x4 vehicle - the roads are fun (winding turns up and down mountains). Try to arrive at Volare before dark - it is tough to find the first time, if you can't see, but Tucker can easily direct you if you get lost. Stay for at least 5 days - there is so much to do we wish we could have been there longer.

Incredible view

  • 5 of 5

This house has a huge deck with wonderfully comfortable furniture to relax and take in and absorb this gorgeous view of the Central Valley. It was so enjoyable to sit on this deck, read a book, have morning coffee to watch the sun come, linger over a lazy lunch as clouds floated in and through the valley, and then finish the day with a glass of wine as the lights from the town below set the valley aglow. It was hard to explore the area because the house held so much appeal. We had beautiful weather so that we could sit outside, but the house has glass all around so the sights are available from the inside as well. The kitchen was very well stocked. We ate all of our meals there. There is a cute little mini-mart that has basics at very reasonable prices. We had stopped before arriving and had bought meat and wine. The little stores close met the rest of our needs. We did go to Guayabo National Monument and Irazu Volcano Park. They both were a little over an hour away. They really weren’t that far away, but the twisting roads made a slow go of it. All the roads were paved however. We had a great stay in the area but the house was definitely the best part. Thanks Tucker for sharing your beautiful place with us.

We had a fabulous time at Volare!

  • 5 of 5

Volare is like a treehouse on the top of the mountain overlooking Turrialba. The view is spectacular and the home comfortable and well maintained. It is in a good location for rafting the Pacuare, about an hour drive. Tucker was a tremendous help in making all the arrangements for our trip, from airport arrival to reaervations for activities. Franklin and Yami, who take care of Volare, provide for all your needs from transportation to meals to laundry, if you would like to pay extra for these conveniences. They are both lovely people, very helpful and completly trusrworthy. We are a family of 5. My husband and I have 3 sons, ages 17,19 and 21. We came here to raft the Pacaure and it was absolutely fantastic. If you like white water rafting, you can not beat it. We loved our stay and would highly recommend Volare.

Beautiful views! Relaxing and restful retreat.

Up in the clouds, overlooking the city lights is this modern yet cozy home. Amazing bird watching and even a sloth in the trees. We lit a fire in the fireplace each evening and played games. Relaxed with a book and coffee in the mornings. Enjoyed cooking each morning and evening. Visited Guayabo Park and Golden Bean coffee plantation.

This house is spectacular in everyway. The service before you arrive from Tucker is 5 star hotel level and when you arrive the service continues. The house itself is better than the pictures (and the pictures are amazing) if you want a millionaires lifestyle experience then book this house.

Volare is truly a magical place. It is the most unique house I've ever been in. Our family of 6 (with 4 teens) stayed for 2 nights in June. My family doesn't get involved in trip planning, leaving it to me. So, they didn't see any pictures of Volare ahead of time. When we pulled onto the driveway leading to Volare, my oldest son asked it the first house on the drive was where we were staying. I told him no. As we drove farther along and Volare came into view, I said, "There it is". In awe, my son said, "We are staying in THAT house?". High praise from a jaded older teen!

We were there such a short time. I could have spent days just sitting on the deck watching the changing view. There is so much charm and little artistic details throughout, it feels like you are staying in a piece of art work. We enjoyed the comfortable beds (enough for family of 6), the strong WiFi (much appreciated with teens) and the hot tub not only with a view but with a hanging bridge (how cool is that)!

Tucker was very helpful answering questions and helping arrange tours. We did a canyoning tour and whitewater rafting on the Pacuare (our main reason for staying in this area). Both were a lot of fun, but the rafting was our favorite activity of the trip. We also loved the climate in this area - comfortably warm but not too hot. But, the best part of our stay in the area was the magical Volare - a destination in itself!

Stunning house with a jaw dropping view.

This place is incredible! The house is meticulously maintained and the view of the valley below is breath taking. Every morning the local birds would put on a show. It is worth getting up at 6:30 to see it even if you go back to bed afterwards . We saw toucans, Montezuma birds, flocks of parakeets and many others from the deck every morning.

There is a couple, Yami and Franklin, that live on the property in another house that are wonderful. Franklin even accompanied our family on a day trip to a nearby waterfall (The one in the picture.) He brought along a machete (I'm assuming for snakes because the trail was well maintained) and a rescue rope in case one of my daughters (7 and 10 years old) got themselves into trouble.

We went to see the ruins in Ujarras and while the ruins were OK, the drive out was one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken in my life. We accidentally took the long way around Lago Alto and the road wound through the mountain valleys where they grow coffee. It was spectacular. It was one of the best navigational errors I've ever made.

The hot tub is beyond words, we were in it every night. The temperature in the house was perfect day and night largely due to it's design. Air flows through the house very well and some of the walls do not join the ceiling in every room. The only draw back is that sound communicates through out the house as easily as the air does. We could hear everything our daughters said in the room down the hall and vice versa, so any romance would require discretion.
