Nice quiet location - room for improvement on property and guidelines

  • 2 of 5

The property is as pictured. Great surroundings, quiet, easily accessible. The time spent at Yellowstone Park, West Yellowstone the town, and Jackson Hole were very enjoyable. We were able to prepare most of our own meals with ample supply of cooking ware and dishes. The grill was useable. The wall heaters in the room came in handy when needed (snowed the last two days we were there). There are a few small things that would easily make this a much more enjoyable visit. Curtains in the upstairs windows (rooms and bathrooms). Give the renters an opportunity for privacy when needed, especially in the upstairs bathroom. Our first day their, the satellite TV didn't work. We contacted the property manager. We were told they had previously had an issue and had a new Satellite box mailed to the property, but didn't end up needing it. They were to contact us back with an ETA when they would be able to resolve. Never heard back from them - called back - they were closed for the day.. Spent 2 hours working with Direct TV on our own. Since we weren't the owners of the property and it wasn't our account, they weren't going to be able to help. We managed to convince them of the situation and finally got the help needed to get the boxes and service switched to the new box. The smoke alarm low battery started beeping while there. There were no extra batteries and we already knew our chances of resolving this with the property manager. The laundry that was required to be done before leaving required laundry detergent...the container was empty. Thankfully there was a store about a mile away that had what was needed to resolve these issues. Anyone looking at this property should read through the rules and requirements closely. Checkout is at 10:00AM. You will spend the bulk of that day performing the list of items on the agreement. Laundry, dishes, haul your own trash away (10 miles 1 way to a landfill). Needless to say, that makes the end of the stay stressful and a worry that you won't get everything done to the owners satisfaction.

Nice location for Yellowstone's west entrance

  • 3 of 5

Pretty drive from West Yellowstone Park in about 20-30 minutes. The cabin was clean and layout nice with comfortable furniture. Just a few added features would make this cabin so much enjoyable and comfortable. Plenty of detergents at the cabin.

One of the reasons we picked this was to enjoy sitting outside to enjoy the environment. There were no outside sitting. Even just a few cheap plastic chairs or foldable chairs that you put back inside would have helped.

The mattress could have used a foam or pillow top topper. The pillows could use replacing. The upstairs bedroom could hear downstairs bedroom. Downstairs bedroom could hear even a person moving in the upstairs bed along with squeaky floors upstairs.

No instructions to use the remote for the TV/Direct TV. It was aggravating trying to figure it out. No directory of channels so you have to scan all the guide for channels.

No microwavable bowls or mixing bowls. More frying pans and covered pots. Another reason we rented the cabins is to make our own meals.

You can't use the drinking water so maybe some gallon sized water jugs instead of having to buy water before arriving.

No curtains in the bathroom and not sure why because there are neighbors right next door.

We have stayed at many HomeAway/VRBO and sometimes just a few additions makes a person's stay more enjoyable. A few inexpensive additions would make this cabin "good" instead of mediocre. It is a business and that is how they run it. So many rules and regulations makes a person hope they don't do something wrong. No other owners have ever had us take our own trash out. Yes, don't leave it outside for animals but have the housekeeper take care of that. The landfill was about 10 miles one way the other way from our departure was just a little too much. The directions didn't mention how far you had to travel. The 8 page rules and regulations told us about that but there were so many rules it was hard to remember everything.

All in all a good for a short stay and good location if you don't won't city life and the noise.

Good location for West entrance to Yellowstone.

  • 3 of 5

Nice ride from Yellowstone. Quiet and peaceful. It was clean and they have plenty of detergent and towels. It was also clean which is very important. We picked this one so we could enjoy sitting outside and enjoying the view. Well, there were no outside seating. A few cheap plastic chairs or foldable to put back into the rental would have been enjoyable. This rental could be so much more with just a little extras. We liked the layout and couches were comfortable. We had problems with the remotes for the TV and more information would have saved us aggravation. Wished they had more instructions and at least a guide to see what the stations number was on Direct TV. The beds were just so so and needs at least a added pillowtop or foam mattress. The pillows were almost useless. You can hear every toss and turn upstairs from downstairs bedroom. Upstairs you can hear downstairs bedroom occupants. Needs more cooking pans like larger frying pans, saucepans with covers and mixing or microwavable bowls.

With all the rules it is hard to really enjoy the stay afraid you might be charged for something you didn't do. I realize homeowners might have to do that. We have stayed in many VRBO type homes and no one had that many rules. Taking our own trash to a landfill about 10 miles away was just a little too much. We had to wash the towels before we left. Most VRBO have you put them in one place. We washed, dried and folded the towels. We also started the wash for the sheets.

Had to call the reservation office for a problem and they were responsive. One of the problems was that the shower head was put on upside down so putting on "hot" was "cold" and vice versa. Guess we should have reported that so no one else would have the same problem.

I don't mean for this to be a negative review but did want the owners to realize their cabin could be so much more with just a few changes. This is a business and if they have many rentals they can not keep up with what is needed in all their units. Little things like curtains on the bathroom window, decent pillows, bottled water because the water is not drinkable.

Successful Sister's Reunion

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was very cozy; it was clean, cute, and comfortable. We found the cabin easily with the directions. It is centrally located and the perfect spot for a home base. The washing machine came in handy after a day at the hot springs. The cupboards were organized and user friendly. Everything was provided except the food. The only problem we had was we couldn't get the BBQ to light. We told the property managers and they had an easy solution for the next occupants. I definitely scored points for finding this little gem. We had a great time and would definitely rent this property again.

Clean, comfortable and convenient! Is what the Bluestone Escape offers.

  • 5 of 5

My family has stayed at the Bluestone Escape, three times over the past few years. I would recommend this charming cottage to anyone looking for great place to stay while visiting the West Yellowstone Area. (The drivetime from the Idaho Fall's Airport into the Island Park area is an easy 90+/- minutes.)

OK, now for the truth! about visiting West Yellowstone, the actual town is a tourist trap, it is best to drive into town, visit the Grizzly/Wolf Exhibit, get a bite to eat, do some shopping, then head into the park. Old Faithful is just a short drive in from the west entrance. Upon departing the park, you can stay at one of the many hotels, upon hotels, upon hotels or you can do as we have done, stay just a short distance outside the park in Island Park Area at the Bluestone Escape Cottage.

Bluestone Escape is located next to the Island Park Resort, this is an upscale area and conveniences such as gas and groceries are right there. If you are a snowmobiler, this area offers some of the BEST SNOWMOBILING in the USA. I could not begin to put on paper how outstanding both the on trail riding and off trail deep powder riding is! That you will have to experience for yourself. Do not hesitate on renting this clean, comfortable and convenient cottage best known as the Bluestone Escape.

Owner's Response: Hi Todd, Thanks for leaving such an honest review. We are glad you stay with us at Bluestone when you come to Yellowstone Country! I have heard comments from repeat guests that the prefer Island Park over staying in West Yellowstone, and the drive is not that far and is very scenic. Look forward to talking to you in the future. he city of Island Park, for all other descriptive words, is 'unique' in its entirety. It was incorporated in May 1947 to meet a state law requiring businesses that serve or sell alcoholic beverages to be within incorporated towns. The city's government at the time drew up the city's boundaries to include all the businesses from the Last Chance area north to the Montana border that desired licenses to serve and sell alcoholic beverages. All other areas of what is now known as the Island Park Recreational area remained in Fremont County.

Because of this, most of the city's 'main street' is U. S. 20, a major highway lined with fine lodges, motels, restaurants, lounges, C-stores, gas stations, tackle shops and recreational vehicle and snowmobile rental businesses. And since 36.8 miles of U. S. 20 are in the city, the city of Island Park proudly boasts that it has the 'longest Main Street in America', although its width is 500 to 5,000 feet!
