About the property

Three Bedroom, Two Bath Newly Renovated With Marina Access

The Old School House is a large historic building in the quaint village of Bernard. We have renovated the upstairs into a 3 bedroom , 2 bath rental with a large living room, peeks at the bay and great views of the western mountain range. A very quiet location with several restaurants, galleries and local shops within a 5 minute ride. There are two restaurants within 5 minutes walking/biking distance. We own a private marina on the harbor, a 5 minute walk away, where you will have access to our kayaks, a row boat and the marina facilities like our grills and picnic tables on the exspansive dock. It's an easy paddle from our marina up into Bass Harbor Marsh, which is teaming with birds, beavers and other aquatic life. For the more experienced paddlers, traveling out of the harbor, one can see the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, visit on shore restaurants, and outer islands.

About Carlton Johnson

I was born and raised in town. We own the local boat yard and marina and bought this incredible property this spring.

Carlton Johnson purchased this house in 2013

Why Carlton Johnson chose Bass Harbor

This historic property was the local school that my mother attended. It is a well known landmark and when it came on the market we were ready to turn it into a fantastic living space.

What makes this house unique

The School House is a beloved historic structure that has retained the charm of an antique home with dramatic angles, knotty pine walls and floors, yet embellished with modern furnishings and appliances designed for comfort and relaxation. The property lends itself well to families or groups of couples, as there is plenty of space to either congregate or settle in with a good book. The school house is a very unique space, with great views and flooded with sunlight. The master suite is large and private with it's own deck and private bath. Access to the only private marina on the quiet side of the island is a big bonus . A short stroll brings you to our private marina, an excellent location for mackeral fishing off the dock, kayaking, picnicking on our expansive deck with pristine views of our harbor. We have 4 kayaks and a row boat for exploring the harbor and the inner islands and the creek/marh at the head of the harbor that goes for miles into the heart of Acadia National Park. A great place to relax on the deck and docks and watch the second largest lobster fleet in Maine come and go . The inner island 500 feet from the dock is home to Thelma and Ernest our resident bald eagles. Their nest is in plain view of the deck and their fishing activities are mesmerising.

House needs cleaning

  • 2 of 5

The property is well-priced, so never mind the leaking shower and broken dishwasher, the hair-dryer and coat-hangers etc that we had to ask for) Jim (the new owner) was charming and helpful. But the house was dirty. Old bin full of plastic bottles left behind from the people before us, dead flies in the mosquito screens -- I'll spare you the details of the toilets. I really do think we could have expected a higher standard of cleanliness.

School House July 2017

  • 3 of 5

Our group consisted of 5 adults, and we stayed at the School House for one week July- August 2017.

Pros:

Quiet side of island - no hoards of people here

Walking distance to Thurston's Lobster Pound

Responsive caretaker, quick solution to problems at the rental once we were there and had cell#

Quirky, interesting architecture

Cons:

Poor communication regarding check-in and location

Non-functioning clothes dryer (fixed promptly when notified)

Bicycles and kayaks not easily usable as advertised

Very basic kitchen utsensils (note: no condiments as advertised), difficult layout for cooking meals

Our stay was OK. The School house was not one of ourfavorite VRBO rentals, but it was adequate for needs.

Much nicer than we'd hoped for! Unique and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the Schoolhouse hoping for something different this time, as we visited Bass Harbor (Bernard), and the School House (upstairs) fit the bill. Plenty of space! and very comfortable. I love how the October early morning sun just pours into all the windows on the south side. We also like the bathtub in the master bath. Such a classic tub! And all the other appliances are New! The kids had fun with the puzzles and the bocci game outside,, and we hiked a few of the coastal trails nearby.

The docks and the lobster place/restaurant are a short walk down the street, and a rocky beach is a short walk to the other side of Bernard point.

We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

Roomy house in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

Newly renovated with plenty of room for the 7 adults in our party. Everything was very clean, the kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook and there is even an unadvertised loft area that can be used for sleeping. Thurston's Lobster Pound is minutes away and we used the kayaks several times to explore the harbor. The owners of the Sail Shack on the first floor and the next door gift shop, including the local neighbors, are also very friendly. This house is located in a very quiet part of the island but still a short drive to Bar Harbor and all the park activities. We highly recommend Southwest Cycles in Southwest Harbor for bike rentals as you pass right by it on your way to the nearby Carriage Roads.

We highly recommend The Schoolhouse and would stay here again.
