The house was awesome. We enjoyed our stay immensely and look forward to being able to stay at the Happy House in the future. It was literally equipped with basic essentials. The view was spectacular and ocean breezes were relaxing. Enjoy! Mahalo!
The house was in good shape and clean. Because of the hedges along the property line it feels very private. You feel like you have a private beach and we only saw two groups of people walk by in front of the house during the four days we were there. If we were to go back to Moloka'i we would certainly consider staying here again.
The only negatives really have more to do with Moloka'i than the house:
The ocean in front of the house is only knee-deep out about 1/2 mile until you get to the edge of the reef. Do not plan on a morning swim nor snorkeling here (drive down to Mile 20 instead).
There's a very proud and temporally-challenged rooster that thinks sunrise is at 4 AM, and 6 AM, and 6:15, 7:22, noon, etc.
Make sure anything sweet is completely sealed up as there are tiny ants that will find it (like our sugar cubes).
Kalaupapa was very interesting and I highly recommend the trip. We walked down and back up, but don't even think of this unless you're in good shape (and you'll still be sore for a few days).
Whatever is at the end of the road is always interesting. Go to East end (bring your snorkeling gear, beach chairs and towels) - there are several good beaches with crystal clear water along the way. Go to the West end too - Kapukahehu Beach was very cool and we should have gone there before our last day (even has a shower).
If you're a foodie, cook at home so you're not disappointed. Kualapuu Cookhouse was the best available - portions are huge.
If you're a Maui fan you probably won't like it here. If you're looking for a place to truly relax and chill for a few days, then Moloka'i should be on your short list.
Our family of 6 fit perfectly in this 3 bedroom for 3 nights/4 days. Everything we needed was available for cooking, relaxing and having fun. Love the house, super cute, great location, we cooked every morning and grilled every night, found shells on the beach and kayaked! Loved having the outdoor shower too. Definitely recommend and will come back! Make sure you go to Hotel Molokai on Friday from 4 pm to 6 pm, so special. Also check out Papohaku Beach, 3 miles of sand (take an umbrella)!
Everything we heard about Happy House–and more–turned out to be true. The place was just about exactly as described to us only the lanai was MORE comfortable than pictured and there was a lot more original Molokai and Hawaii related art on the walls than we ever expected. We also never heard about the chickens, but they were very entertaining! The beds were comfortable. Everything was immaculate when we got there. Luckily there was a starter kit of coffee and we found some spices and olive oil in the pantry which were handy. The master bedroom with its door to the gently lapping sea was excellent, nice breeze flowing through all night, we slept quite well. Dayna was very attentive and easy to get along with, though we only met on email. We had two simply delightful meals at Paddlers, kayaked and snorkled all over the reef and beyond, enjoyed whale-watching and scuba diving with Captain Tim, and took both hikes to Halawa Valley and the other one to Kalaupapa (both booked through Molokai Outdoors which treated us very well). Indeed we would recommend Happy House as long as it doesn't become so popular we can't book it ever again. We're hoping to return.
Happy House is a wonderful Molokai get-away. It has excellent energy and is located right on the water. You can see the ocean from the dining room, kitchen, and master bedroom. It has plenty of space for 6 people and has a fabulous lanai with plentiful lounge space. Kayaks and a bbq keep you busy and it is located near to town. The beach is quiet and serene and whales are in clear view during the winter. The staff was helpful and kind. I totally recommend Happy House!!
