Beautiful, relaxing, scenic getaway!

  • 5 of 5

After living in Washington my entire life, I figured it was time to get out and visit Mt Baker. Our family of 4 got together with another family from Canada and it was an excellent half-way spot to meet up! Gorgeous drive and easy to get to. Owners were awesome and allowed us an earlier check-in and we arrived to a warm & cozy home! Much more spacious then even shows online, and TONS of sleeping space! I think there were at least 3 sets of bunk-beds, some queen-sized. We didn't expect that! Kids had lots of sleeping options! 2 TVs, pool table, foosball table, and a luxurious spacious kitchen. Decor was rustic & classy. The best part? The hot tub. This was the hugest hot tub we have ever used! And it's private with beautiful views of the organic outdoor wildlife. Just a 5 minute drive from the best pizza of my life (Chair 9) and coffee of my life (Wake n bakery). The drive up to Baker was longer than I thought, but more beautiful than I expected (45 minute drive or so). We went end of October and got the usual Washington rain, and also some beautiful sunny days! No coats required! When we visit again, we'll definitely stay here!

Owner's Response: Hi Rilla, Thank you for the excellent review! We are so happy you and your group enjoyed the Black Bear Lodge, and everything it has to offer. I must say you hit our favorite local spots in Glacier, and glad the weather was a good mix! We look forward to hosting you again. Winter and Summer are great at Mt Baker! House itself is great, location, VERY CLOSE NEIGHBORING HOUSES and owner not so much!

The house itself is great! There is a hot tub outside and right behind it is ANOTHER property. On the other side of the house is ANOTHER property. If you're looking for something with a little privacy, I would not recommend this place. We got carried away with noise at night (neighboring house next to hot tub called the sheriffs) and the owner called us right before we left (9 AM) "I AM ON MY WAY RIGHT NOW TO LOOK AT ALL THE DAMAGES" was what he said as soon as I got on the phone, of course I got MAD and didn't have very nice choice of words to exchange with him. During our stay, we were called orientals and Mr. McGabe didn't care to listen so we didn't leave on a good note. He threatened to charge me EXTRA to compensate for the neighbors for our noise, never heard of this before and mind you, the neighbors were as loud as we were.

I didn't plan to write this review because I really wanted no more ties with this property BUT i got home and noticed that I was charged MY FULL deposit at 8:54 AM and refunded me at 12:00. Obviously Mr. McGabe didn't care to look at his property or hear our side of the story before he charged me. He was convinced that his house was DAMAGED and we're all college students who had a huge party (we're all in our 30s and had 3 kids with us). He charged us before he even called me and refunded me when he realized that his property was not damaged AT ALL!

I understand fully that he's concerned for his property but I suggest he learn how reconcile before jumping to conclusions. We didn't stay there for FREE, we should receive some sort of respect.

Owner's Response: Dear Priscilla, During your stay I was contacted by 2 homeowners regarding noise levels. The guests that were staying next door to you, were a couple celebrating their 8 year anniversary. I was contacted 4 times (3 times from them, once in tears, and another from a full time resident behind) during their/your stay, I called and spoke to you the first time, and asked you to keep the noise down, as the neighbors had complained, and you acknowledged me After hearing that the sheriff was called out at 1am, it was a red flag, as well as your demeanor. As standard operating procedure, we run a damage deposit with the card we have on file, until we have determined that there was no damage. Once we did a walk though, a refund was promptly given. All Vacation Properties in the Glacier area are in communities, with houses nearby. We realize everyone is having a good time and that is what we want, all we ask is for some consideration for others, who are also trying to enjoy their weekend getaway. Best to you.
