Lake Steinhude has become a particularly popular hub for kitesurfing. During the season, over 90 sailing regattas take place on Lake Steinhude. The Steinhuder Meer is also known for its so-called “Auswanderer”—sailboats over 100 years old that are found only here. Swimming and bathing in the lake are permitted and are especially enjoyable in the healthy moor water. The centerpiece is the artificial, 35,000-square-meter bathing island located in the south near Steinhude, featuring a sandy beach and sunbathing lawns. On the north shore in Mardorf, the supervised “Weiße Düne” beach beckons. The surfing beach is also nearby.
