Gary was born and raised on St. Kitts. He grew up fishing, camping and spending time in the kitchen at his family's hotel. Cooking remained his passion throughout the years and, after attending St. Mary's University in Nova Scotia, he moved back to the island to pursue a culinary career. He has owned and operated several beachfront restaurants on the island and he is currently the proud owner of Reggae Beach Bar and Grill.
Mary was born and raised in Greenwood, SC. Growing up on a farm, she knew she wanted to become a veterinarian from a young age. After graduating from Clemson University, she enrolled at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) in St. Kitts. She graduated from RUSVM and moved back to the island of St. Kitts where she has been employed at RUSVM for over 7 years.
Mary and Gary Pereira met while she was attending veterinary school and they have been married since 2006. They welcomed a daughter, Ava Kate, in 2012.
They love 'living de island life' and 'rushing slowly'!
Penny purchased this apartment in 2004
We have a 2 bedroom apartment located under our residence on the hillside above Turtle Beach. Our family and friends love to visit St Kitts so we built a comfortable apartment for them to stay. We love to show our guests a good time on St Kitts so we are now renting out our apartment for new visitors!
Our comfortable apartment is within steps to Turtle Beach which has one of the best snorkeling reefs on St Kitts. Within walking distance to Reggae Beach Bar & Grill where you are welcome to complimentary beach lounge chairs, umbrellas and snorkeling equipment. We will be very happy to recommend some great restaurants close by, as well as, offer insight to many local activities and day trips!
Location was perfect for our stay in St Kitts, remote yet close to best beaches on the island, Reggae Beach to be exact. Don't miss out on The Spicemill for Dinner, we got lucky and had a full moon over Nevis the night we ate there. Loved our view from the apartment, the cat and dog that came to visit daily and the fridge that was pretty much like home, stocked full of all the necessities! I would suggest renting a jeep or 4 wheel drive for the road out to the apartment, otherwise our stay could not have been more perfect, we so enjoyed St Kitts & Nevis, cant wait to come back and 'Live de Life' & 'Rush Slowly' - Thank you Mary and Gary for sharing your special place.
The Turtle Nest at Turtle Beach was the perfect place to vacation! The apartment was decorated with bright colors and comfortable furniture. The kitchen was well stocked with all the necessary equipment to prepare meals during our stay. Refreshments were in the refrigerator when we arrived...so delightful! The bedrooms/bathrooms were large and comfortable. There were plenty of clean towels and sheets and a washer and dryer. But the very best part was the veranda. This is where we spent our time when we were at the apartment. The veranda was galley-like and extended the full length of the apartment. Panoramic views of the mountainous areas, lush trees, shrubs and the Carribean sea. Our time was totally spent without stress. We were within walking distance to the Reggae Bar and Grill owned by Gary and Mary, as well. Delicious fresh food served with a smile. You could spend the day out on the beach there. Lots of rentals to enjoy the water, sunbathing, swimming, etc. St. Kitts, also, has a lot of history to learn. We enjoyed a tour all around the island, very interesting. Mary and Gary were wonderful to us, very kind and caring, making our stay an amazing vacation! Now, we are back home, remembering our stay, and trying to live by the Reggae Bar & Grill's slogan, "Rush Slowly!", my friends. Awesome! Thank you!
This is a fantastic place to stay! The rooms were great..very clean...beds very comfortable! The view from the porch was fantastic.......Atlantic and Caribbean could both be seen, as well as Nevis! As we lounged on the porch in the afternoons we saw plenty of monkeys about! The drive to the home was breath-taking.........beautiful views! The Reggae Bar was close enough to walk for a cold drink! I loved every aspect of the Turtle Nest and can't wait to get back of another visit! Kudos to Mary and Gary!
Our family of four stayed at Turtle's Nest apartment for a week in April and absolutely loved our stay here! This quiet apartment is in a beautiful location--much less developed than areas on the northern peninsula yet still within easy reach of great beaches (we found Cockleshell and Sandy Banks to be the best on the island) and also great restaurants. Bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and spacious with plenty of towels and linens and a great washer/dryer. The Wi-Fi works great! The beach right below the apartment (Turtle Beach) is great for snorkeling and hanging out with a beautiful view of Nevis. We enjoyed coffee on the front porch each morning with this gorgeous view. The dock is a great place for star-gazing at night. We saw groups of monkeys several times when walking to the end of the cove. As noted by previous reviewers, the kitchen had some staple food items left behind from previous tenants that were very helpful to have. We cooked dinner in the apartment three nights and ate out 4 nights at some top notch restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive (especially loved Spice Mill). The Reggae Beach Club is an easy 15 minute walk (or 5 minute drive) and a fun place to hang out and dine--don't miss the Friday night Lobsterfest! Delicious. They serve a great lunch and have lots of rentals and activities. The owners, Mary and Gary, are wonderful people and extremely helpful--answering questions, helping with directions, etc. Hard to imagine finding a better place to stay in St. Kitts!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Turtle Nest apartment on the South Peninsula! In addition to beautiful Turtle Beach being steps away from your front door, there is another great beach, Cockleshell, which is only a 12-minute walk from the apt. Cockleshell is where you’ll also find the lively and friendly Reggae Beach Bar & Grill. The apartment is very comfortable and we arrived to discover the refrigerator stocked with necessities -- and some nice cold ones, too! We loved enjoying our coffee every morning, lounging on the large porch with great views of Nevis and Turtle Beach. Owners Gary and Mary are so welcoming and down to Earth. Penny was very helpful before and during our visit with tips and suggestions for our stay. With so much to do and see on St. Kitts and Nevis, we rented a car during our stay. We visited many beaches, including our favorites for lounging and swimming, Cockleshell (Reggae Beach) and South Friars. Cockleshell has beautiful, calm waters. There’s also good snorkeling down near the point. South Friars has good snorkeling just a few feet from the beach and a favorite hangout for good food and drinks there was Jam Rock. Sand Bank Bay is a lovely, quiet beach more for walking and enjoying the views while the Pelicans fish. We took the car ferry to Nevis for a day trip, and enjoyed a rainforest hike with Reggie of Nevis Adventure Tours. Reggie is very knowledgeable about the forest and pointed out the trees, fruits and history of the area. It was a great experience and he was helpful every step of the way. For lunch on Nevis, don’t miss Golden Rock, a garden paradise set in the mountains that truly needs to be seen. Also on Nevis, Pinney’s Beach is a nice, wide beach, serene with calm waters. For sightseeing on St. Kitts, don’t miss beautiful Romney Manor for its views and to watch artisans make Batik clothing, art and accessories. The Brimstone Hill fortress’s 360 degree views and history are amazing; it’s well worth the drive. Salt Plage is the place to watch the sunsets while enjoying great appetizers, tapas and service. Of course, don’t miss Reggae Beach Bar’s Lobster Fest on Friday nights. You won’t taste better lobster or mahi-mahi on the island. For so many reasons, this was one of our very favorite vacations.
At the outset this property seemed to good to be true, great price for a 1st floor fully furnished 2 bedroom apt with ocean view so I did some more inquires and put down a deposit.
Now we're home and wishing we were still in St. Kitts. The property was what was expected and too many positives to list.
Bottom line if you want a 2 bedroom, 2 bath rental and don't mind the drive to the southern end of the island away from all the hustle and bustle of the cruise ship crowds, then this place is for you.
Full kitchen was very helpful along with the washer and dryer and AC in the bedrooms.
Owners of the property (Gary and Mary) were amazing as were their pets; we already miss the company of the black and white cat (forgot its name) and their little dog Gidget.
Only negative was the dirt road travel as the road hadn't been graded in some time. You will need a rental car as calling a taxi for going to town for meals or shopping will get expensive unless you plan on eating all your meals in.
St. Kitts is a great place to vacation and this property is as advertised; probably can't ask for anything better for the price.
