Why Dirk Albert de Veer chose Panama

Because of its pleasant and secure environment, not to warm and humid and above all with a beautiful nature and nice people we started living in Paso Ancho in 2001. The holiday homes have been created during a number of years.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy the private and peaceful setting of our property and houses as well the mild climate and nearby access to the various natural parks. Restaurants and supermarkets are still close by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband, Glenn and I, were planning our first trip to Panama and a friend forwarded the link to Las Plumas to us. We read it and it was just want we were looking for. We were able to make all the arrangements with Dirk over the internet. And when we arrived, it was better than we thought. The house itself, we were in Woodpecker, was beautifully landscaped as was the whole compound. The interior was nicely furnished; clean and comfortable, and it had everything that we needed for our month long stay. This area is an agricultural one so we were able to get fresh fruits and vegetables. Right on the corner in Volcan is a grocery store that caters to Americans with many familiar products and signs in English. There were plenty of activities to do in the area including hikes right from the house. A short drive from the house will take you to hiking trails and several birding sites. Dirk has the contact information for birding guides in the house. We used Carlos and enjoyed our outings with him. In addition to other birds, we saw the Quetzal which was my goal. Also only a short drive away are good restaurants and even a day spa for manicures and pedicures. But you don't have to leave the house to see natural beauty or birds. Look out the window and you can see the mountains and birds at the feeders that are provided. But all of this we sort of expected from Dirk's web site. What we didn't expect was what a great place this was to come home to. We took several overnight trips during the month and it was so nice to come back to Las Plumas to rest and regroup. We would sit outside on the covered patio, look at the flowers and the mountain and the clouds and the birds and unwind and relax. It is just such a comfortable place made more so by the hospitality of Dirk and his staff. I can't say enough about Las Plumas and we highly recommend it.

This is a quiet beautiful place with a wonderful host. The location is amazing and we spent hours sitting on the patio taking in the beauty of the area. Thank you Dirk for making our stay memorable.

Quiet and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 3 month stay at Las Plumas. We stayed in Quetzal and everything was clean and in good condition. We were very comfortable there and our guests also enjoyed it! My favorite thing was sitting on the patio and enjoying the beautiful property: flower, trees, clouds and LOTS of birds! It is very private and secure. We did have a few issues with hot water and wi-fi but Dirk fixed everything in a timely manner. My only complaint would be the road leading up to the property. It is very rough (rocks, holes...) but that is out of his control. We eventually rented a small SUV that had more ground clearance and that worked fine. Dirk helped us with restaurant suggestions and sights in the area. We would definitely return!!!

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Panama and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. We spent the month of February in the hawk house and absolutely loved it. The view is gorgeous! All you hear is the rushing water from the river below, the rustling of leaves and the birds chirping! It's a place to enjoy nature and be away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

We did lots of hiking! The temperature during the day was in the mid to high 70's so being outside was very pleasant. It cools down at night so make sure you get some warm clothes with you. Layering works great. I missed my throw blanket!

Dirk was a pleasure to meet and visit with. He was very responsive and more than happy to answer any questions we had.

If you want to meet some expats, head to Deep Forest Taberna up the road. They gather there every Saturday afternoon for singing, eating and visiting. And breakfast every Friday at Manas restaurant.

Also keep in mind, there are no street signs. It could be tricky finding the place, or any place for that matter. Thank God for google maps. We followed the voice prompts to get everywhere we needed to go.

And just few days before we left, we sighted the white faced monkeys swinging in the trees in the mountain across. That was very exciting!!

We highly recommend Las Plumas and we will for sure plan another trip there.

Beautiful and peaceful setting, with everything you need to be comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We were at Tanager for two weeks. Were planning to stay for 7 months, but had to leave for personal reasons. The birds in the trees were what greeted us first, wonderful. Then Yaneth who showed us everything. Then Dirk who arrived to make sure we were comfortable. It is an astounding place with everything needed to be comfortable. Good internet, hot water, laundry facilities, private but within a few minutes (walking) of a small supermarket, and 10 minutes drive to the town. Close to Finca Dracula - the orchid farm - beautiful. Many wonderful walking and driving areas. Brilliant for photographers, bird-watchers and walkers. Thank you for everything, Dirk!

Great Host Well Designed and Maintained Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Hawk for a month earlier this year. Very well laid out and equipped home above the Chiriqui Viejo River.

Dirk and his team were very responsive and helpful. Volcan is a laid back more Panama real town and was easy to get to know and interact with locals especially to practice our Spanish. Enough good Restaurants and stores in town. Cerro Punta, the mountain towns and parks are close-by if you have a vehicle. We rent an SUV for clearance and access to some of the more rural roads. Wildlife and Forest is easily accessible too.

La Concepcion Shops are about 35 minutes away and David and Boquete about an hour by car.

We are returning soon to stay in Mot Mot for another month and look forward to seeing DIrk and Volcan again.
