Glenville Cottage is a charming century cottage (a traditional style Cape Breton farmhouse) located in "The Glen", less than 10 minutes to Inverness or Mabou, on the west coast of Cape Breton Island. Location is key with this property. It's rural but just off Route 19, the main highway that curves through western Cape Breton. Beautiful view of the Cape Mabou Highlands, the same ones that the Glenora Distillery is nestled in. There's a spacious deck to enjoy the warmth of the afternoon sun and the lovely scenery. As day turns to evening, catch a glimpse of the sunset over the Cape Mabou Highlands, read in the hammock or relax in one of two hammock swings, or BBQ and play some tunes on the deck. The sound of the brook and the unbelievably clear starry nights are enchanting. This is your home away from home vacation rental on Cape Breton Island. Also, the Glenora Distillery, with its great dining, ceilidhs, scenery and bar, is just a few minutes away by car (or walking distance, if you want to enjoy some whisky).


Glenville Cottage is a bright, open concept living space which can accommodate up to 6 people – 3 bedrooms (2 bedrooms with double beds, 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds) and bath (with jacuzzi tub) upstairs. There are 4 entrances and lots of natural light, with a large, spacious deck off the back of the house, which offers views of the Cape Mabou highlands. Every season is spectacular.

The home was built around 1901 but has had many renovations in recent years. There are Honduras pitch pine hardwood floors throughout. The modern kitchen is fully-equipped. Four skylights on the second floor add beautiful light during the day and offer a chance to stargaze from your bed at night. The jacuzzi bath tub is a relaxing way to end the day.

Truly a place of solitude, there is no cable television or telephone, but you won't be completely disconnected. We do have the convenience of wi-fi/high speed, a television and DVD player.


The cottage has a feeling of privacy but is centrally located just off Route 19 directly between the villages of Inverness and Mabou, both located near the ocean. Guests have told us that our convenient location is a great starting point for day trips all across the island. Inverness, less than a 10 minute drive, has gorgeous Inverness Beach (Supervised by Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service) with boardwalk, shops, hospital, Arts Centre and is home to Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses. Mabou, the same distance in the other direction, has more beaches, hiking, square dances, and the wonderful Red Shoe Pub. Walk to the Glenora Distillery, half a mile away for fine dining, the beautiful bar, daily live music, and single malt whiskey.

There's lots to do in the immediate local area (Inverness, Mabou, Port Hood, Margaree) – relaxing on the beach, hiking, golfing, touring, galleries, ceilidhs and square dances, whale-watching, fly-fishing, kayaking, local artists and crafts.

1 hour to Baddeck – shopping, restaurants, boat tours, Alexander Graham Bell's summer residence

20 minutes to Port Hood – swimming, boat tours, boardwalk

30 minutes to Margaree Forks – fishing, touring, beaches, restaurants

30 minutes to hiking at Sight Point – amazing hiking and views

Note: we do share a driveway with 2 other homes that are used partially as summer cottages.


We grew up in Mabou and Inverness, respectively. We bought this home in 2013, when Brenna was pregnant with Lucinda. We enjoy the opportunity to spend some weekends and vacations in Glenville as we always leave feeling refreshed. It's a very beautiful property and one we're very happy to have available to those of you visiting our lovely corner of the world.

About Brandon & Brenna MacNeil

We grew up on Cape Breton Island – in Inverness and Mabou. This is our first house and one that we've admired for many years. We live and work in Halifax but visit Cape Breton as much as we can. We're enjoying being parents to our 4-year-old, Lucinda Belle.

Why Brandon & Brenna MacNeil chose Inverness

Visiting our parents in Cape Breton, we always drove by this home in Glenville. We commented to each other on numerous occasions how much we both loved it. We jumped at the chance to purchase it and spent the summer of 2013 driving to Cape Breton on weekends to work on renovations, mow the lawn, check in with Collie the painter, Steve - the master hardwood floor layer and Uncle Davie our awesome carpenter. This was all done while Brenna was very pregnant. Everything was done in time to welcome Lucinda Belle for 2 weeks September 2013. Now we're excited to open our home up to you for your Cape Breton vacation.

What makes this house unique

Location is key with this property. It's rural but just off Route 19, the main highway that curves through western Cape Breton. Excellent place to stay in Cape Breton

Glenville Cottage provided a warm, cozy sanctuary for us on our trip to Cape Breton. It is renovated beautifully, well-maintained and comfortable. While it is situated between Inverness and Mabou, both are close enough for the essentials (shopping, gas, restaurants),and very close to the start of the Cabot Trail. The hosts, Brenna and Brandon, were very accommodating and provided all sorts of useful information for us...

All in all, a great property, one to which we would be happy to return!

Beautiful, peaceful, central location

B and B are fantastic owners; quick responses, honest (I forgot about a rate change which Brenna refunded me without me even asking) and their place is stocked so that renters can enjoy all of the comforts of home (all kitchen gadgets, board games, deck chairs/swings, clothes line, extra linens and house supplies).

The cottage location is great! You are so close to the distillery that you can actually have a meal with drinks and walk back home, 15 minutes from fantastic, kid-friendly West Mabou Beach and 10 from beautiful Inverness Beach. Mabou - groceries and restaurants is only a 10 min drive and Inverness is even closer.

A great place to come home and fix a family meal after exploring Cape Breton culture and being outdoors.

There is gorgeous hiking within 45 minutes of the cottage. Actually, the Cape Mabou Highlands you see from the back deck of the cottage, is one location for hiking. It's gorgeous.



It will take a good 4 -5 hours to drive around the Cabot Trail (to enjoy it). I recommend leaving early, choosing a hike, making stops along the way, having lunch at a restaurant. You can do the Cabot Trail clockwise or counter-clockwise ... depending on where you'd like to be when. If you want to hike the Skyline in the morning, then clockwise. If you'd rather be driving along the ocean for sunset then counterclockwise.

$250 refundable security deposit upon successful check-out. Deposit is returned 7 days after check-out.
