Brandon & Brenna MacNeil
About Brandon & Brenna MacNeil
We grew up on Cape Breton Island – in Inverness and Mabou. This is our first house and one that we've admired for many years. We live and work in Halifax but visit Cape Breton as much as we can. We're enjoying being parents to our 5-year-old daughter.
Brandon & Brenna MacNeil purchased this House in 2013
Why Brandon & Brenna MacNeil chose Glenville
Visiting our parents in Cape Breton, we always drove by this home in Glenville. We commented to each other on numerous occasions how much we both loved it. We jumped at the chance to purchase it and spent the summer of 2013 driving to Cape Breton on weekends to work on renovations, mow the lawn, check in with Collie the painter, Steve - the master hardwood floor layer and Uncle Davie our awesome carpenter. This was all done while Brenna was very pregnant. Everything was done in time to welcome Lucinda Belle for 2 weeks September 2013. We're excited for you to enjoy your Cape Breton vacation at Glenville Cottage
What makes this House unique
Location is key with this property. It's rural but just off Route 19, the main highway that curves through western Cape Breton. Beautiful view of the Cape Mabou highlands, the same ones that the Glenora Distillery is nestled in. The sound of the brook and the unbelievably clear starry nights will calm your soul. This is an "away from it all" vacation rental. Perfect for families, couples, friend weekends and honeymooners.

Beautiful little house
We very much enjoyed our stay at this beautiful little house. The house is sparkling clean, the pictures are very accurate, and the property is lovely. The location was perfect for us since we wanted to go both north to Inverness (and beyond) and south to Mabou. There is a full grocery store in Mabou (10 minute drive) which had everything we wanted. Our group' s only mild complaint was that using the shower was a little awkward -- it is a handheld shower and the wall bracket to hold it is not adjustable. Totally functional, however. Would stay here again!
Thank you Todd. We're so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay at the house and in the area. Thank you for the suggestion for the shower. We look forward to having you back again.
Perfect for our visit
Glenville Cottage was perfect for our stay in Cape Breton. The house was immaculate and cozy, and everything we needed was there. The fall colours were spectacular, and the weather was equally dramatic! We enjoyed a hike in the hills nearby, the pub at the Distillery, and a beautiful drive up the coast to Cheticamp. I look forward to returning. Thank you so much Brenna and Brendon!
Thank you so much Christine. We look forward to having you back anytime!
The property and main living space of the home was great. However the shower is terrible. We were four adults, including two tall men (who hit their head daily) and each of us complained about it. Unfortunately we would not recommend renting this property because of it.
We appreciate your review and understand your feelings. It’s unfortunate that you had an issue with the shower. We are also two tall people, one of us being 6’4”. Granted, we’ve used the shower many times and are used to it, but we have never hit our heads. Something you may not have realized is that the shower head also comes off the wall and can be handheld, which can help with navigating the slanted roof in the shower. It’s also very helpful for showering children, especially after the beach. As a bit of backstory, the house was built in 1901, before there was indoor plumbing. The bathroom was added to the home much later, and there is now a jacuzzi bathtub and a shower. It’s not ideal for everyone, but there are often trade-offs necessary with century-old character homes such as Glenville Cottage.
We loved our stay, very quaint, homey, and private. We had every thing we needed.
Thank you for your review Cliff. We're so happy you enjoyed your stay.
An unexpected treasure
We absolutely loved the upgraded cottage ambience in a pastoral setting. We had everything we needed and more. We were within a short drive to a variety of different hikes which included the coastal hikes around Mabou to the Skyline trail on the Cabot trail.
We enjoyed the cuisine and of course music at the local pubs. The cottage is situated basically next door to North America’s first single malt whisky distillery. All in all our stay was a delightful experience.
Brenda, it sounds like you had a delightful vacation. Thank you for your review and sharing about your stay and experience.
Perfect summer getaway
3 city gals who love the beach rented the Glenville cottage for a few nights. We were not disappointed! What a beautiful setting! The cottage was a dream... very clean, nicely decorated, and had everything we needed. We immediately felt very comfortable and relaxed. We also loved the location and visited three different beaches during our stay: Inverness, Mabou and Port Hood. The blankets for nighttime deck hangs, and fun selection of DVD's were a nice bonus! Brenna very kindly supplied a detailed list of things to do and see around the area. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and family. Thank you Brenna and Brandon!
A girlfriends’ trip + Cape Breton beaches + Glenville Cottage sounds like a great combo! We’re so happy you had an enjoyable time at Glenville Cottage, the local beaches and surrounding area. The weather was incredible during your stay - 3 beaches over 3 days is impressive. Thank you for your compliments about the decor and cleanliness of the cottage, as well as how comfortable you felt during your stay. We hope our guests will enjoy a home away from home feeling at Glenville Cottage. We look forward to hosting you again or any family and friends that you recommend.
There is gorgeous hiking within 15 to 45 minutes of the cottage. Actually, the Cape Mabou Highlands you see from the back deck of the cottage, is one location for hiking. It's gorgeous.
CAPE MABOU HIKING TRAILS - 3 access points (15 minutes is the closest at Cape Mabou or 30 minutes on the Sight Point side).
It will take a good 4 -5 hours to drive around the Cabot Trail (to enjoy it). I recommend leaving early, choosing a hike, making stops along the way, having lunch at a restaurant. You can do the Cabot Trail clockwise or counter-clockwise ... depending on where you'd like to be when. If you want to hike the Skyline in the morning, then clockwise. If you'd rather be driving along the ocean for sunset then counterclockwise.
Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs are located within 10 minutes drive of the cottage.
We are centrally located to ceilidhs and square dances - Brook Village, The Barn in Margaree, Glencoe, Southwest Margaree and West Mabou.
