About the property

Two Lakefront 2 BR Cottages in northern Wisconsin - Pets Welcome

Situated on the sandy shores of 500 acre Oxbow Lake, the 'Walleye' and the 'Musky' cottages each offer two bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens, living room and baths with showers. Both the Walleye and Musky Cottages sleep 4, with 4 twin beds total (and the option to turn one set in each cabin into a King bed). Within 50 feet lies the beach and dock area where a fishing boat with trolling motor awaits the walleye, muskie & pan-fishing action of aesthetically beautiful Oxbow Lake. Guests are welcome to BYO boat - the landing is directly across the lake and plenty of room to tie yours up.

The lakefront is a family-friendly area with a gentle slope and no steep drop-offs in the water. You might also take one of the kayaks or canoe to explore Oxbow's many bays and islands. Presque Isle, known as 'Wisconsin's Last Wilderness' offers limitless opportunities for hiking, biking, wildlife viewing & birding. Located within the immediate area are the 3000 acre Catherine Wolter Conservancy Area, the Van Vliet Old Growth Hemlocks, the Ottawa National Forest, the North Lakeland Discovery Environmental Center and the WinMan Trails. All offer miles of mapped hiking and biking trails and self-guided nature walks some with programs that will enhance your wildlife experience.

'Presque Isle,' French for 'almost an island' offers many other large and small water bodies for varied fishing and water sporting activities. Evenings you can gather around the outdoor fire pit, perhaps after a dinner out at one of the several fine supper clubs in the Presque isle area, or engage in some friendly family rivalry with a badminton match or board game. You will come to savor the laid-back Northwoods life style and will end your vacation refreshed and ready to return again soon.

experiencing comfortable cabin, beautiful lake, and wonderful owner during/after the big storm

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Musky cabin 20 minutes before the big storm hit the area, which knocked down trees and power line in several places. So, right after we unloaded our stuff, the electricity went out and left us with no power, and no water for more than 24 hours. We were not prepared for that condition; as soon as the morning came, we went sightseeing outside of the area to avoid the problems. We talked with Cal on the phone, then he went to the cabin to clear the water from the boat, and checked with the utility company. He talked with us several times on the phone to update us the situation. Luckily, when we were back to cabin that night, power was back too. The morning mist and sunset on the lake are beautiful. We enjoyed the boat and kayak on the beautiful and peaceful lake; we had a great time fishing on the boat and on the dock; when the power was out, we enjoyed the board games also. There was another little event when we used the boat for the second time; the battery was not fully charged after the power was back, and we found out about it in the middle of the lake and had to row the boat back. The battery problem was caused by an unknown issue with power plug, which also caused problems with our slow-cooker later. I don’t know if these issues related the earlier power outage because the battery was fully charged before the storm hit the area. When we ready to leave, we told Bill to check on it and fix it.

Knowing we didn’t enjoy the cabin at its best condition, even the main problems were caused by the uncontrollable event, Cal communicated with us later and offered us a generous refund. I really appreciate him for being kind and helpful. Despite the power outage, we enjoyed some quiet and peaceful time at our stay and later considered the storm as an adventure which challenged our problem-solving skills.

I will give my stay five stars because the cabin is comfortable and the lake is beautiful, and I appreciate the owners don’t only care about making money, but really care about the guests’ satisfaction. They are the most wonderful and helpful owners. I know I can trust them with my next vacation in the Northern wood.

I also want to suggest: Please prepare some instructions regarding where things are located at, and how to use the battery charger, etc.

Quiet anniversary getaway

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in the Musky cabin on such a peaceful lake! We had a great time sitting on the dock fishing, watching the loons gliding by, seeing duck families darting through the water and a witnessing a heron land nearby. The mosquitoes and horse flies made being outdoors a challenge, but it was well worth it to smell like bug spray! We enjoyed the kayaks for use with the cabin, but spent our days biking Winman Trails, hiking and exploring the waterfalls of Michigan. We also took a trip up to Copper Peak ski jump where the views are amazing!!! We had a fire every night and stayed out until the mosquitoes took over for the evening. Arriving mid-week, the cabin was clean, but cabin's paper supplies were limited and firewood was not freshly stocked. No information was provided about the boat, electric motor and battery charger (shared between the two cabins) that our neighbors told us about on our third day. We purchased our own supplies on the first morning there, and bought our own dry firewood. These are things that were supposed to be provided and that we shouldn't have to ask for or about, so that is why there are only 4 out of 5 stars in this review. All in all, it was a great time and an enjoyable place to unplug!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your fair review, Kerry. We definitely apologize for your inconveniences... it is not typical for us to leave the place poorly stocked and we will be sure to remedy in the future. And please know... we absolutely are on call during your stay, and are more than happy to address any concerns you have or items you need. We are thrilled to hear you took advantage of the area during your stay -- so much to explore and sounds like you hit some of the highlights from WinMan to Copper Peak! Please visit us Up North again sometime.

Best setting ever to have morning coffee

  • 5 of 5

Our day started in this tranquil place, looking toward the sun and sipping fresh brewed coffee. The mornings were ear-ringingly quiet, with the sudden call of loons to break the silence. We took it all in each day and appreciated the setting and all the area had to offer. We stayed in the Musky cabin and shared the Walleye cabin with other family members throughout the week. Sunday morning was the highlight of our fishing experiences with the explosive event of hooking into a huge 20+ lb musky right off the dock. We all but landed the beast and were happy to see it get off as we tried to release it without injury. The remander of the week was very frustrating trying to figure out where the other fish were. The kayaking/canoeing (all included as well as 14' fishing boat) and exploring was as good as it gets. We loved Oxbow Lake and it's islands, bays and tributaries. The water quality was great along with it's healthy vegetation. Our trip to Ashland/Bayfield was well worth the drive on one rainy morning during the week. Oxbow Lake was great, the cabin was more than adequate and the owners were extremely friendly and helpful. A great week! ! ! "remember to bring your best bug spray"

Walleye and Muskie cabins

  • 4 of 5

We rented these 2 cabins and have to say that our time was very enjoyable. The cabins were well equipped with everything that we needed. We enjoyed the movies and also the peace of not having the phones interfering with all that we did. (NO PHONE SERVICE UNLESS YOU WENT UP TO THE ROAD) We had bon-fires everyday and cooked almost every meal over the fires even in the rain. Now the Mosquitos and all the rain we could have done without,. Thank you to the owners who did all to make us comfortable.

Quiet cabins on beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the "walleye" cabin for our honeymoon and it was fantastic! The owners were very nice and helpful. I do reccomend specifying which cabin you are staying in prior to arrival (we had to go to town and call because we weren't sure which cabin was ours). Everything was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked. There are no TV channels (which we didn't mind) but there is a dvd player and movies can be rented at the gas station in town. There is a bait shop in town and the gas station is well stocked with groceries and liquor. We found that Boulder Junction was a great place to find the things we couldn't find in Presque Isle and it's only a 15 minute drive. Both the PI Bar and Grill and the PI Yacht Club are great bars (and cell phones work at both places). The yacht club is a great place for happy hour and for getting fishing advice (one of the bartenders is a guide). They also have great homemade soups! The bar and grill has great pizza and is more of a "party" crowd. The diner in town also has great breakfast. It is a must to visit the Carlin Lodge for dinner. Beware that on Thursday nights they offer their German "buffet" and have a limited menu. However, I strongly reccomend the buffet....it was excellent! You are given a tasting menu and they bring the food in small portions so you can taste everything and it's all you can eat. The limited menu on Thursdays does still include steak and some other specialty dishes. Oxbow Lake is a beautiful, quiet lake with decent fishing. We caught lots of bluegill, perch, walleye and bass. There is a rock bar right off the dock that has excellent night fishing. If you're not familiar with the lake make sure you grab a map and go in to the yacht club and the bartender will give you a good idea as to where the rock bars are because they are not all marked and seeing as the water is high some markers are underwater. We didn't run into any problems though. We also took a day trip up to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan and I have to say that is a must see! Beautiful! One more "warning"....the parking area at the cabins is set above the cabins so you have to haul you gear down some stairs (maybe 10 or so stairs). Thank you for sharing your little bit of heaven with us! We hope to be back!

Presque Isle is nestled in the northwest corner of Vilas county, and within the 220,000-acre AmericanLegion State Forest. Right across the the state line is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Ottawa National Forest with over a million acres of explorable land. This is a quiet community that respects recreational boater/skier/tuber. Fishing and anything water-related are the natural highlights; with a plethora of awesome day trips, most notably waterfalls, Lake Superior, and hiking trails.
