Mid-century Style Semi-ocean Front Bungalow

Bedrooms 2
Space 686 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 0 - 7 nights

About the property

Two Bedroom Cottage - Perfect For Couples Or Small Families. Pet Friendly.

Located on a quiet street in South Nags Head, our cottage, Beach Blanket Bingo, takes you back to the Nags Head of the past. It has been at its current location since 1960, a year before Nags Head was incorporated as a town, but is thought to have actually been a part of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp on the Outer Banks from the 1930s playing a role in FDR's New Deal.

We purchased the bungalow in the spring of 2010 and have extensively renovated while maintaining it’s vintage charm and character. Step back to Outer Banks vacations of the past with mid-century style. Semi-ocean front four houses back from the beach, the front porch has a wonderful direct view of the ocean – perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or evening cocktail. It also has a full-screened back porch with partial ocean view.

The kitchen is fully renovated, completely equipped and has a washer and dryer. Bedroom 1 has a queen size bed. Bedroom 2 has a twin bed and twin trundle bed. There is one full bath and a large outdoor shower. Parking is available for two cars.

The National Seashore begins about a half mile south down the beach for quiet endless walks. Nags Head completed beach nourishment in the fall of 2012. Bodie Island lighthouse is also nearby. You have quick access to the Outer Banks Pier and Whalebone Junction area where you can enjoy the new Jennette’s Pier, restaurants, markets and the causeway to Manteo. Multipurpose sidewalks are along the beach road for biking, running and walking.

2014 is the first season the cottage has been available for rent for limited times since our ownership. Family and friends who have stayed share “It’s so fun. We love your cottage and location and the uncrowded beach!”

We do allow one to two well-trained small dogs. It is the perfect place for a romantic couple’s getaway or for a relaxing small family vacation.

About Mark McCray

We have been vacationing in the Outer Banks for over 25 years. We live in Richmond, Virginia and have enjoyed renovating several homes.

Mark McCray purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Mark McCray chose South Nags Head

We have always dreamed of owning in the Outer Banks. Several years ago we rented on East Loon Court and noticed a small very sad blue house across the street. In 2010 it became available and when we went to look at it for purchase we fell in love with the little place despite its condition. We particularly liked its South Nags Head location because it's quiet and more like Nags Head of the past. Today the little cottage is a restful escape from today's busy world.

What makes this cottage unique

It's just a few steps to the beach with views of the ocean from the porches. Brand new kitchen (2011) in 60s style. New HVAC systems. Restored pine paneling and hardwood floors.

A true beach cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay during Labor Day week. Even though Hermine had passed through on the day before we arrived, she couldn't put a damper on what was in store for us. Beach Blanket Bingo is the most charming and welcoming place we have ever stayed. If you like what you see in the pictures, you're going to love it even more in person. All the renovations and decorating that Mark and his wife have put into their cottage are perfect and stay true to that vintage feel. It reminded me of staying at my favorite aunt's and uncle's house during my childhood. They have not left any details overlooked. Other than your clothes, sheets, bath towels & washcloths, toiletries, and food, you really don't need to bring much more with you.

We loved being able to walk just a short distance down to the beach every morning to watch the sun rise, then coming back to sit on the front porch with our coffee and watch the waves. Sometimes we even brought our breakfast plates out there, too!

Being in S Nags Head, which is just a neighborhood of beach houses (no businesses), it is quiet with limited traffic. But it's central location makes it a quick trip by car to restaurants and shops, either north or south. Although the beach is nice down by the cottage, my husband & I also enjoyed a short 2 min drive down to Coquina Beach across from the entrance to the Bodie Lighthouse. There is ample parking and a shower/changing station.

We definitely plan to return as soon as we can!

Owner's Response: Dear Andrea How nice to receive you wonderful review. We are so happy that you enjoyed Beach Blanket Bingo so much and we so appreciate you understanding of the cable/internet issues that followed in the wake of Hurricane Hermine at the start of you vacation. The feeling of a beach vacation of a simpler time was we were hoping to capture at our cottage. It sounds as though you enjoyed all the pleasures it offers as we do, coffee and meals on the porches the quiet of the early mornings down on the beach. Thank you so much for your appreciation. We look forward to hosting you again in the future. Take care. Sincerely, Mark

Everything was perfect. I was so sad to leave. The house was great. Wonderful kitchen, everything you need. Perfect living room when you have a rainy beach day, wonderful bedrooms for napping and sleeping. Great deck to watch the sunrises and great screened in back porch to watch the sunsets. And don't forget the the Hamic underneath for sleeping after a long day at the beach. Thank you

Cute, cozy and clean beach bungalow!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a very special stay at Beach Blanket Bingo. I was truly sad to leave but look forward to going back. First, the location of this cottage is perfect. It is very close to a nice beach. We loved how the cottage was decorated in a retro theme, yet felt so clean and fresh. The owner has put so much thought into this cottage. There were a lot of little extras and nice touches throughout.

Could not have found a better place to stay. The beach is a 30 second walk away. The cottage had a great vacation feel to it. It was quiet, peaceful, and relaxing the whole week. We will definitely be returning.

Beautiful, comfortable cottage!

  • 4 of 5

BBB was convenient to the beach and the bike path, with lovely porches for enjoying the marine air and watching the sun move across the sky. In back there is a hedgerow with a zillion birds in it - wonderful to see and hear while eating breakfast on the back porch. Inside: the fabrics! The beautiful cookware! The checkerboard kitchen floor! The real furniture! We were completely comfortable in the nice new beds and even napping on the couch. There is AC for when it gets hot, although we preferred to keep the windows open - after all, we traveled 3,000 miles to be near the beach and wanted to hear the surf and feel the breeze. Ditto with the nice TV - works great, not really needed in our opinion.

The cottage really is mid-century. It harks back to the era of flattops and shingle cottages that used to define OBX, which is otherwise now covered with horrible mega- party central cottages. BBB is not that - it is a comfortable throwback. We loved it.

We rented bikes for the daily trips to my sisters' other cottages nearby. Fun! We also rented a "beach package" with sand chairs, an umbrella and boogie boards, but that was unnecessary, since BBB had all of that.

South Nags Head is beautiful, and there are excellent grocery stores nearby (in the car). There is no need to shop on your way.

We had unfortunate neighbors this time, however: a huge extended family of rednecks who had rented most of the cottages on Loon Court. They partied hard all night most of the nights we were there, so that we couldn't leave the windows open and had to use our earplugs. We were fearful to call the police (Nags Head's noise ordinance dictates quiet at 11PM) because it would have obvious who called, since we were the only ones not in the party. I hesitated to write about it because it is beyond Mark's control, and yet I hope the homeowners' association on the street can do something to prevent this sort of thing because it nearly ruined our vacation.

5 stars plus plus plus for the cottage, but only 2 stars for the stay.

Owner's Response: Allison I'm so sorry to not have replied to your review until now. I thought I had and my wife pointed out I had not replied to a couple of them. Thank you for your wonderful review, we are so glad that your enjoyed our little place. We are also sorry that your vacation was disrupted by other vacationers who were not considerate of neighboring vacationers. We have addressed our concerns with other cottage owners and they are equally sorry their renters were misbehaved. Hopefully these situations can be avoided in the future. Thank you again for your review and feedback. Sincerely, Mark
