Cottage On Private Beach Close To Cape Charles

Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 4

Relaxed is the word here. Cottage is located at Smith Beach approximately 15 minutes north of Cape Charles, VA. House is an easy, 150 foot walk from the beach. The cottage is around 1200 square feet and features a living room, large bedroom, 1 full and one half bath, sunroom with futon, and a large screened porch with water views that is perfect for entertaining or quiet hours. The cottage will sleep 4 adults comfortably or two adults and several children. The beach has long expanses for walking and swimming with a lot of nature to enjoy which you typically cannot see at large beaches (enjoy the pelicans, osprey, and bald eagles as well as numerous species of shorebirds, you might even see a deer swim in the bay!) Two excellent golf courses are 15 minutes away in Cape Charles. There is a boat ramp available for Smith Beach residents and guests and fishing is typically good and sometimes great. Charter fishing is available from Cape Charles and Wachapreague which offers inshore and deep sea trips. A number of good restaurants are close by and the Eastern Shore has many interesting places to visit - Onancock is about 45 minutes and Chincoteague/Assateague and Wallops Island are a little over an hour North. Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area is which is known for birding is also close by. Cycling, running and walking are extremely pleasant here with many options and low traffic.

This area is quiet and relaxing, there is a lot (or little if you like) to do but the stimulation comes from nature and fun not noise and crowds. There are sunsets.

Absolutely beautiful sunsets!!!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is just as described and shown in the pictures. Everything was neat and clean when we arrived. Peaceful morning walks on the beach to the south, days relaxing with you toes in the water and your face in the sunshine and evenings combing the beach at low tide waiting for the beautiful sunset. The area is absolutely gorgeous and we are already starting to plan our next trip. Thank you Smith Beach residents.

not what we had expected

  • 3 of 5

I think we just had a different expectation... From the pictures, I thought the house was right at the sea, but it is located across the road so there is no direct access. The cottage really smelled - just a weird smelly smell. The beach is lovely, very private, inviting for long walks and exploration. The equipment in the house is just very very old, there's almost a patina of stain on everything - again, this was my first time renting a beach cottage and I just had a different expectation. We traveled with two small kids so we had to spend more time in the house than as if it had just been us.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that the cottage was not what this guest expected. We try to be clear that the cottage is not directly on the beach in the property description under "Setting" and "Location type", amenities and again in the additional information we send guests prior to their stay. The last thing we would want is for someone to think the cottage is other than what it is. This is the first we have heard of this misunderstanding. Nonetheless, having reviewed our posting we will make changes to see that this does not happen again. Again our apologies. I am not sure about the odor. The cottage had guests up until a couple of days before this stay, so it was not empty for any time. We were there several days after this guest and did not notice an odor. We will see if there was any changes to cleaning chemicals by housekeepers. The cottage is certainly not new and not presented as new. Sinks and tub are original and show their age, but are clean and functional. Sink fixtures are either brand new or a couple of years old. The stove and oven were installed new in June 2016, HVAC (mini-split system) was installed new in 2014. I can't say that I understand the "patina of stain". The cottage is cleaned between each guest (of course) and we have not had negative comments regarding cleanliness from other guests. Nonetheless, we will get with the housekeepers to make sure they continue to do what is expected. Again, we are sorry that the cottage was not what you had expected.

Nice little getaway

  • 4 of 5

The private beach was awesome. Even over a holiday weekend it was never crowded and was very quiet. The screened in porch was ideal as there are quite a few bugs out this time of year. I like to cook and was pleased that the kitchen had all the basic essentials; big fridge, frying pans, baking sheets, bowls, can opener, slotted spoon, knives, cutting board, etc. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the bed— it seemed old and the pillows were very flat. Other than that, the place was nice for a quiet weekend at the beach!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. Sorry the bed did not suit. The mattress is not new, but not too old either and it is of good quality - Sterns and Foster. Looks like I need to check it though. Thanks again!

Little piece of serenity

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed for 4 nights. Calm bay waters on the beach. Very comfortable. Quiet neighbors. Fully stocked kitchen. Clean bathrooms. We were out on excursions most of our stay. I was a little worried since we had no way to contact the owner if anything went wrong (no Wi-Fi, cell service) but all went smoothly.

Thank you for sharing your little piece of serenity with us.

Wonderful location - a relaxing, quiet beach cottage, which allowed us to bring our pooch, too!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Weirwood! We had a nice relaxing week and loved the nearby location to Smith Beach. We also loved that we could bring our dog to the cottage and to the beach. One of the days we had the beach completely to ourselves! We had some issues with the water pressure in the only shower in the house - we think the shower needs to be upgraded. The bed was a bit uncomfortable and left us feeling stiff in the morning. The kitchen was fully stocked and had everything we needed to cook and steam crabs which was greatly appreciated! Neighbors were friendly and helpful. Overall, the cottage was clean, quiet, and in a great location.. thank you!!

Best place to get away fromit all

  • 5 of 5

We booked this lovely cottage as last stay of our 3 weeks’ vacation which included some days in Washington DC and a longer stay in Charlottesville with several hiking-trips in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Goal has been to relax the last week before the flight back home to Germany and that's exactly what we've got. Smith Beach indeed is away from it all. One small road along the beach with mostly small cottages on both sides. No restaurant, no bar, no shops, only us, the neighbors and the nature. If you want to have the beach if shared only sometimes with some neighbors, if you want to walk your dog or go jogging early in the morning and meet and greet neighbors here and there, if you want to walk miles along the beach and meet anyone, if you want to sit hours outside on the screened porch and watch the birds - that's the best place you can go to. We fell in love with this place even though we're usually need activities and new adventures day by day.

In the previous comments someone described the cottage as hidden gem and we agree. It's not new and not newly refurbished but exactly that's part of the story of this cottage and we liked it.

A small note nevertheless: dear owners, some new towels would not interfere with the great atmosphere of the cottage and dear travelers, you have to accept to organize yourself without closets but with drawer cabinets.

Last but not least, our heartfelt thanks to all the neighbors who welcomed us with open arms and supplied us with fresh vegetables from their garden. Our special thanks to Estelle and Gerry as they invited us to a dinner with their friends. Estelle, I will miss your dog Sunshine as companion for my daily walks. All of you are wonderful and we like to see you again!
