Five blocks from two of Berkeley's most popular shopping/restaurant streets. Minutes from campus and Bart.

All of the modern amenities, strong powerline wifi and internet connections, 55' flatscreen, stainless appliances, new BBQ, espresso machine, Ninja blender, soda maker, insulated windows and walls, warm LED lighting throughout, Nest thermostat, etc.

And with all that newness, still the coziness you'd want in a Berkeley home, hardwood floors, fine oriental carpets, leather sofa, faux paint exterior, elegant weavings on walls.

Owner lives quietly in sound-insulated in-law unit below with two separate entrances. You have complete privacy but immediate access for help when needed.

And the owner, a social scientist, knows that what keeps far-flung families connectedis reunions, the events that mark the landmarks in family-members' lives (marriages, graduations, victories and loses) or just happen because it's high time, so why not now? He loves to play the invisible host to your gatherings with their noise, children's footfalls, socializing, parties and ruckus comings and goings. It's a great house for these.

About Jeremy Sherman

Jeremy Sherman, Ph.D., M.P.P. I'm an easy-going social scientist, professor and author, and former non-profit manager and environmental lobbyist. I've taught psychology, sociology, history, English, rhetoric, Advertising and Business Strategy. Currently teaching in an MBA program at California College of the Arts. For 18 years I've been a collaborator on a major origins of life research project with U.C. Berkeley Biological Anthropologist/Neuroscientist, Terrence Deacon. I have written four books and 500 Psychology Today articles. I'm father of three grown children (none at home), partnered, and a jazz bassist/singer performing 3x a week in Berkeley restaurants.

Jeremy Sherman purchased this house in 1996

Why Jeremy Sherman chose Berkeley

Like many I bought this large home when my kids were pre-teens, not foreseeing that they'd fly the coop. I rattled around in its largeness for years, then rented the in-law unit to very satisfied long-term renters.

Recently I realized I could expand the downstairs a little, move into it and rent the top two floors of this house. I just poured $300k into the expansion and renovation which was expertly done.

The house was built in 1924 as part of a development. To save money on planning they would flip blueprints and make a mirror image house, my neighbor's two doors down. Having been in the walls, I can say the work was excellent for the time. An enviable layout and design.

What makes this house unique

After my divorce in 1996, I moved into a converted two room garage and just adored it. To ease the transition for our three children, my ex (now a good friend) and I agreed to keep our large home and take turns staying in it. About a year into the arrangement it suddenly dawned on me to buy my own home. 1830 Sonoma was the first and really only place I visited--love at first sight.

It was the big tree in the front that sold me, the quiet tree lined street, Berkeley's most beautiful library a half-block down, my favorite commercial district three blocks away.

In 1997, the house was in terrible shape, lived in since the 40's by a woman who refused any help with it in the decades before she died at 90. I did a huge remodel then, and though I've lived and travelled broadly (years in Guatemala, Tennessee, Boston, London) couldn't imagine a happier place to live.

The creekside yard is lovely, the neighborhood is safe (I've left car and even house doors unlocked all night by mistake--nothing stolen). The neighbors are dear, parking is effortless (you get a driveway but there's ample street parking too), the weather is perfect, access to UC Berkeley is a breeze.

There are fancier neighborhoods in Berkeley but most are way up in the hills. This neighborhood is to my eyes the sweet spot for convenience and beauty.

The front door is arched. I'm big on faux painting (an earthy homespun look, and though I've painted over the faux interior the outside is subtly fauxed. The front door is round topped. The ceilings are sculpted, there's picture molding on many walls, lots of sweet touches, now all touched up.

Great Berkeley home

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cozy home in North Berkeley. We used to live in Berkeley, on the north side closer to campus (this is not close but still walkable), and couldn't have asked for a better place to feel like we were home again. Kitchen had everything we needed and then some, the deck was amazing, the front garden pretty, and the owner was easy to communicate with and very quick to respond. Will stay here every time we come back to Berkeley if we can manage to get this place!

Excellent Home in Berekely! 5 out 5 stars.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Jeremy's house for our son's MBA graduation. It could not have been a better place to stay. The kitchen and dining room are one big room, with a dining table for 12 people. We used it multiple times. The bedroom set up was great as our party had ages 7 months to 90 years. When our 6 month grandson needed a nap, back in the second bedroom he would go, and our daughter could join the rest of us. We had a catered supper Saturday night. Between the back deck and dining room, there was plenty of space for everyone.

The kitchen is well stocked with a great variety of cooking tools, even included a large crock pot so our daughter could slow cook Chile for everyone Friday night after graduation. Jeremy was out of town, but was very available via text, and when we had a question, he responded almost immediately. There is plenty of parking on the street. The house is bright, cheery, up to date and very clean. I would recommend this house to everyone staying in Berkeley.

Three of us rented Jeremy's house while attending a workshop. It was spacious, well-equipped, and beautifully appointed. Jeremy was accessible and very timely in his communications with us. Would definitely stay again and hope to do so!

Quiet, comfortable and roomy

  • 5 of 5

This was a very nice house in North Berkeley; excellent location and neighborhood; house was light and comfortable; everything worked; my sister-in-law especially liked the bath sheets/towels; Owner was attentive and helped with the only problem - getting the TV to work; will stay here again when in the area;

This is a wonderful place for families. It's in a lovely quiet neighborhood close to everything. Beds were comfortable, and you'll find everything you need to feel right at home. We enjoyed watching hockey on the large screen tv. Couldn't have been happier with our stay in Berkeley!
