All of the modern amenities, strong powerline wifi and internet connections, 55' TV in living room, and 40" in master bedroom. All new memory foam mattresses, stainless appliances, new BBQ, espresso machine, Ninja blender, soda maker, insulated windows and walls, warm LED lighting throughout, Nest thermostat, etc.

And with all that newness, still the coziness you'd want in a Berkeley home, hardwood floors, fine oriental carpets, leather sofa, faux paint exterior, elegant weavings on walls.

Owner lives quietly in sound-insulated in-law unit below with two separate entrances. You have complete privacy but immediate access for help when needed.

The owner, a social scientist, knows that what keeps far-flung families connected is reunions, the events that mark the landmarks in family-members' lives (marriages, graduations, victories and loses), holidays or just happen because it's high time, so why not now? He loves to play the invisible host to your gatherings with all their noise, children's footfalls, socializing, parties and ruckus comings and goings. It's a great house for parties.

About Jeremy Sherman

I'm perfectly Berkeley, informal, intellectual, artistic. I'm a decision theorist researching and writing about how the living make tough decisions from the origins of life to everyday decision making. My book on origins of life research: "Neither Ghost Nor Machine: The emergence and nature of selves (Columbia University Press, Fall 2017). I've written over 1200 blog articles for Psychology Today Ambigamy: Insights for the deeply romantic and deeply skeptical. I'm happily single. Father of three, new grandfather of one. I sing and play bass in jazz soul and world music combos around Berkeley.

Jeremy Sherman purchased this house in 1996

Why Jeremy Sherman chose Berkeley

When looking for a home, this was the first property I saw and it was love at first sight. The tree-lined street won my heart. Like many I bought this large home when my kids were pre-teens, not foreseeing that they'd fly the coop. I rattled around in its largeness for years, then rented the in-law unit to very satisfied long-term renters. Three years ago, I realized I could expand the downstairs a little, move into it and rent the top two floors. In 2015, I poured $300k into the expansion and renovation, expertly done.

It's in Berkeley's sweetest sweet spot near everything, but cozy, superb, neither urban nor suburban.

What makes this house unique

Always ample parking, a very safe neighborhood (I've left my car unlocked overnight, and one time even left a car door open! Nothing stolen! Perfect centrality.

There are fancier neighborhoods in Berkeley but most are way up in the hills or the traffic is terrible (e.g. College Ave). There are neighborhoods closer to town center but they're busier, parking is harder and they have a rougher edge.

This neighborhood is to, my eyes the sweet spot for convenience and beauty.

The front door is arched. I'm big on faux painting (an earthy homespun look, and though interior walls are white, the outside is subtly fauxed. The ceilings are sculpted, there's picture molding on many walls, lots of sweet touches, now all touched up.

A fine house in a great location !

  • 5 of 5

This is a fine house in a great location close to the BART and grocery stores & essential amenities. The house was kitted out with everything we could have wanted & Jeremy our host was a pleasure to deal with. We had a family of 6 including 4 teenagers & the house met all our needs. If we return to Berkeley on vacation again, Jeremy's house will be first on our list.

Love, love love 1830!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and her family live in Belfast, NI. My son and his family live in Berkeley, CA and we live in Jacksonville, FL Ever since our grandson Adam was born 8 years ago (he's the grandchild who lives in Belfast), the 3 famiiles have gathered every 2 years in Berkeley, CA. The first time Robyn's family and my husband and I stayed in a hotel which was only marginally satisfactory. So the other 3 reunions we've had have been in houses I found through VRBO. This the second time we have stayed at 1830. The house works for our family (master suite on the second floor, 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, living room and a table in the kitchen large enough to comfortably seat 12 on the first floor. The house is perfect for a multi-generational family and as far as I'm concerned perfect for everyone who needs a house this large. All the "usual" things are available from this house; e.g.BART, restaurants, shops etc. What makes 1830 unique is the responsiveness of Jeremy, the "landlord". He lives downstairs and communication is typically by text. Jeremy responds quickly and positively to his tenants needs. So when you're washing dishes, you're standing on the kitchen mat he bought at my request and when "sweeping up" the coffee grounds you accidentally spill (as I did) with the dustbuster the house now has, thank me for asking him for one:-) We typically decide when we want to gather and I look for a house on VRBO. As we get closer to 2019, our next year to gather, we will check 1830's availability and plan around that. Thank you Jeremy for being such a great landlord and owning this wonderful house just 6 blocks from where my son and his family live!!

Awesome house for a family gathering!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for a family vacation week with our son, who lives in Berkeley. Four adults and two eight year olds (plus my son and his girlfriend most times) shared this space most successfully and we had loads of space. Three roomy bedrooms, great quality air beds, two full baths, lots of towels, comfy living room and huge dining table which we enjoyed to the fullest. This place is fully equipped with kitchen utensils/equipment, spices, towels, etc plus a lovely deck with lots of chairs, a grill and picnic table (evening sun). Laundry facilities & soap provided. AND did I mention it was spotless! Very clean, fresh and bright. The owner, Jeremy, briefly introduced himself when we arrived and said to let him know if we needed anything. Didn't see him after but was easy to reach at any time. Groceries, public swimming, BART, and restaurants all relatively close. We loved this place & would rent again if we found ourselves needing extra space again in future for a family vacation.

Wonderful house in a perfect neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at Jeremy's house. There were 8 of us in town for a family wedding and the house was perfect for our needs. The neighborhood is amazing - quiet, friendly neighbors, and located just blocks away from groceries, coffee, restaurants, etc. We walked everywhere. The house itself is lovely - very well laid out for a group stay and stocked with everything you need (although more towels would be nice - there is tons of extra bedding but no extra towels. Jeremy was nice enough to bring us a few more). The only other suggestion I would make is to de-clutter the closets and cabinets - they are a bit of a jumble. This is a small thing and certainly wouldn't keep us from renting again. We loved sitting on the back deck or on the front porch and watching all of the walkers, runners, cyclists go by. I would live in this neighborhood if I could! Thanks Jeremy!

Great Berkeley home

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cozy home in North Berkeley. We used to live in Berkeley, on the north side closer to campus (this is not close but still walkable), and couldn't have asked for a better place to feel like we were home again. Kitchen had everything we needed and then some, the deck was amazing, the front garden pretty, and the owner was easy to communicate with and very quick to respond. Will stay here every time we come back to Berkeley if we can manage to get this place!
