Muir Beach Ocean View Garden Cottage is a detached, stand alone cottage with full view of both little and big beach. This is the perfect place for a getaway for a single person or a couple. The cottage is rustic and a great place to launch for coastal visits, checking the local restaurants, hiking. The cottage has a refrigerator, microwave and toaster oven, it is not equipped for people who want to cook.
Walk to little beach, Pelican Inn, Zen Center, explore the Golden Gate National Recreation Area while staying in a magical, private cottage with wrap around deck for enjoying the views.
This is the place you will want to stay at to get away from it all. At the end of a road, with just the ocean in front of you. The cottage is an efficiency with a refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave. This is not a place for cooking meals. It is for a maximum of 2 people trying to get away, hike, and enjoy the local restaurants.
Muir Beach, like most of California is experiencing a severe drought and we ask our clients to take very short showers.
This was the mother-in-law unit when we lived at Muir Beach. My mother liked to claim that she had the 'best view'.
Isis Schwartz - please send online inquiries first - phone calls after response purchased this cottage in 1987
Because Muir Beach is stunning, private, and yet close to a world class city - San Francisco.
Great get away and launch pad location. Ideal for people who will go for hikes and explore the surroundings, enjoy local restaurants. The cottage has a refrigerator and coffee pot, it doesn't have a kitchen. This is a country/ocean cottage, not a hotel. If you are looking for amenities like a hotel can offer please check the coastal hotels.
We booked this little bungalow to escape the city, and couldn't have been happier. We actually brought up food and a little camp stove and cooked on the deck, went hiking watched the beach and relaxed. It's an easy walk to several trailheads to hike either into the Tennessee Valley or up onto Mt. Tam. We hiked to Stinson beach and had lunch via the Dipsea. The deck is probably bigger than the whole bungalow, and we made great use of it. I brought up a sleeping bag that was great as a blanket, as the night was chilly. As the description mentions, there is really no kitchen, so if you want to cook you do need to be a bit creative. The bungalow is small but still has exceptional views of Muir Beach and even the city/Sutro Tower if it is clear. The only thing that would have made it better was if there were an outside heater, since nights can be chilly. Isis was very responsive and accommodating of our schedule. We will definitely be back!

It rained all weekend and it was still a dreamy stay in a well appointed little room with a big deck and a gigantic view. Loved hearing the sounds of the ocean all day and night. Some day when I hunker down to write that novel I hope the owner will let me stay for a month.
Thoroughly enjoyed every minute at this wonderful little cottage! What a perfect location for a solitary retreat of spiritual renewal.
Though it is only a one room studio (plus a bathroom/makeshift kitchenette) it's about the same size as a standard hotel room...but soooo much better than a hotel. You've got this AMAZING view plus complete privacy.
The bed is extremely comfy with lots of pillows. The view from inside is excellent and the windows open so you can hear the ocean all night long.
This cottage is situated on the hillside in such a way that it feels extremely private even though there are many neighbors. The deck is spectacular and it is where you'll want to spend most of your time.
There is an outdoor kitchen (gas grill, a sink and a prep area) on the deck. Unfortunately, the propane for the grill was not accessible when I was there. I'm sure I could have requested it, but it wasn't important enough to me to bother the owner with. Next time I will request ahead of time that it be hooked up.
I actually was able to make excellent meals using the toaster oven and microwave! (Broiled steak, roasted asparagus and baked a potato in the toaster oven! Heated soup in the microwave and french bread in the toaster oven, etc.) The only difficulty is that there was no salt and pepper so I had to improvise. Also, make sure to bring your own coffee and creamer. There was only some instant when I was there.
It is true what other reviewers have said about it being difficult to get up there...but it is well worth it! Just drive slow and pull in to a driveway when someone comes from the other direction and you won't have any problems
Looking forward to staying here again next time I'm in the bay area! This will definitely be my "go to" place.
We would stay here again. The views are lovely. With houses on the hillside above a beach, it looks like the Cinque Terre. And it is so close to San Francisco.
Our stay had three issues. Not deal breakers, but something to be aware of.
The security deposit situation is one I have never encountered before. You have two options. A modest non-refundable insurance policy plus a refundable deposit for a fairly standard amount. (We went with that one.) Or a very large security deposit that is not guaranteed to be refunded plus the standard refundable deposit. This option made for a very large security deposit, especially if you have no guarantee that you will get the majority of it back, no matter how you leave the place.
The deck is indeed spacious and there is basically a kitchen out on it (large sink and gas grill). But the gas grill didn't work.
It was not a problem finding the access (on Sunset Way) to the property. The directions were clear. But the security code the owner sent us for the lock didn't work. We have Verizon, and were able to text the owner, but could not call her. So we drove to the Pelican Inn (about a mile) where we could make a call. By that time, she had texted us the proper code. Also, there are two codes needed. One for the gate on Sunset Way and the other to actually get in to the house. Also, you don't get access to the larger house, which means you don't have easy access to the beach. That wasn't a problem for us as we enjoy views and don't enjoy sand in our shoes, but others may want to be aware.
We loved the cottage! Technically it is the guest house for larger house. Everything as advertised. Private deck is very large with lounge chairs, table, chairs, built in gas grill & full size kitchen sink. Inside there was very small microwave, small toaster oven & small coffee pot (no coffee filters or coffee though). Everything felt cozy & nice. Several special touches - beach towels, extra pillows, burn ointment - so it felt homey. The only draw back was finding the place. Since you are coming in the back gate (instead of the front) there is no address. Plus I did not have ATT cell service on the road driving there. Must drive all the way down the road, turn around then look for the special gate. It all worked out, but navigating the Google map with the pin on it without service was a bit tricky. Park on the street (as best you can). It is a very narrow one car road. When you get to the cottage it is all worth it though. :)
The cottage was as the owner described and well-maintained. The directions to the property requires a close-reading to follow correctly, but they were clearly written. The cottage itself was nice and secluded; however, the surround area (Muir Beach, Muir Woods, and Stinson Beach, in particular) were very crowded. Given that we visited on one of the first weekends of summer, this is not surprising nor is a problem with the cottage. The crowds just detracted from our quiet weekend away.
I will happily recommend this cottage to others, with the warning that during good weather parking will be a problem everywhere but the cottage.
The cottage was as promised. Very basic, a bedroom and bathroom. Beautiful view and wonderful porch from which to enjoy it. We were able to relax. Parking however, was a problem. Between landscapers, service people for other homes, and beach goers both day and night, every time we left we lost our parking spot. The owner did respond quickly when one evening we had no parking due to the weekend beach goers, but it would have been helpful to know of alternative parking prior to arrival. i would recommend the cottage for someone who has every intention of staying put, but know that cooking options are very limited. Again, the view was beautiful.
Muir Beach is located within the Golden Gate National Seashore, we are 5 minutes from the Muir Woods National Park and close to the towns of Mill Valley and Stinson Beach. Muir Beach is located 25 minutes from the town of Mill Valley, California. Mill Valley has 2 theaters, the Sweetwater for music venues, the Throckmorton for comedy and theater, and the Marin Theater company. The Northern California coast is one of the most beautiful coasts in the country (there I say, the world). Look us up: San Francisco and the Northern California coast.
