The Captain's Suite comfortably sleeps 4 people. We are currently accepting bookings for The Captain's Suite on Nantucket Island. We invite you to be a guest in 'The Captain's Suite,' a two bedroom, one bath suite of rooms in our historic home, 'Castle at Sea.' We only have one group of up to 4 guests at any time...this is not a B&B! Castle At Sea is a charming, spacious, historic, former Whaling Captain's home built in 1768 and located on a one way street in the the heart of Nantucket Town. Note the front ''Friendship Stairs,'' an architectural feature of the island's early Quaker history. This gracious home boasts high ceilings, and within this historic home is The Captain's Suite, which combines old world charm with modern amenities and is ready for your vacationing comfort and pleasure.
Each of the two bedrooms has its own flat screen cable TV, fan, and the suite shares an air conditioner. The 'back bedroom' is light and airy and has two beautiful twin canopy beds and two antique wicker chairs, perfect for relaxing with a good book. The 'middle bedroom' is smaller, has a full size canopy bed, an oriental rug, fireplace, comfortable chair, and connects directly to the bathroom. The suite comfortably sleeps four people and is perfect for a couple, or for a family of four. From the suite one can enjoy the delightful sounds of the noon and 6 pm church bells.
The Captain's Suite is on the second floor. We do not recommend the suite for guests who find stairs difficult, or guests who have mobility or balance difficulties.
This home is just steps from the island's fine shops, wonderful dining opportunities, museums, and art galleries. It is very convenient to the island transit system which has a 'stop' at the nearby corner. Nantucket has many fabulous beaches. The three closest beaches that are within walking distance include:
1.Children's Beach with it's wonderful playground, sandy beach and bathing area (2.5 blocks)
2. Brant Point Light House beach - a 5-10 minute walk, or 3-4 minute bike ride brings you to swimming at Brant Point
3. Jetties Beach- a 15 minute walk, or 5 minute bike ride.
Consider exploring the island and the many other beaches by bike or moped, take a tour, wander the quaint streets, or make use of the island transit buses which stop at the nearby corner.
The Castle at Sea property has a lovely, very private, and serene landscaped backyard with magnificent mature hydrangeas, a lily garden, and other beautiful plantings. It provides a surprisingly private refuge in the midst of Nantucket Town's Historic District. Guests are welcome to enjoy the yard and the patio area which has two chaise lounges and a table and chairs. Guests are invited to dine on the patio in this lovely and private yard.
Nantucket, 30 miles at sea, has waters that are warmed by the Gulf Stream which surrounds the island during the late spring, summer and fall. The island is accessed by ferry or plane...to get your preferred travel times be sure to make reservations well in advance. Bring your bathing suit and book, sandals and comfortable clothes and prepare to relax on the patio or at the beach, or in one of the wicker chairs in the suite. For many guests the location of this home, with it's proximity to beaches and the island transit system, make it unnecessary to have a car. Most vacationers enjoy bike riding or walking. However, island car rentals, or bringing your own car on the ferry, are available options and should be arranged for well in advance of your travel dates.
The Captain's Suite is filled with old world charm and with lovely antiques. It is accessed via the home's second staircase...a private back staircase off the kitchen that is only used for suite entry. This lovely suite is equipped with a Keurig coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, 2 flat screen TV's, and high speed internet service. You will find that the suite has special touches designed to make your stay extremely comfortable.
The suite will be fully cleaned prior to your arrival and it will be cleaned upon your departure with no charge to you. Maid Service is not provided during your stay. For stays booked in weekly increments a full Suite cleaning, including linen change, will be provided at the end of each week.
Please note that the suite is within a home built in 1768. Building codes and standards, as we know them today, did not exist then. Therefore, one must be ready for lower doorways, slightly irregular staircases, narrow doorways, etc...all the things that give antique houses that antique charm.
The suite has a private bathroom that has a wonderful over sized claw foot soaking tub complete with shower...a perfect place for bath or shower lovers to enjoy an indulged soak or rinse at the end of a day at the beach. Please note that the high rim of the antique tub may not be suitable for some.
To protect the lawns and gardens, our guests are encouraged to store their bikes, strollers, or beach chairs in the designated areas. These items are not permitted in the yard or in the suite.
While no pets are invited, please note that there is a dog on the premises. Our Goldendoodle is often loose in the enclosed backyard. We ask guests to keep the entry arbor garden gate closed to prevent this furry little lady from taking an independent walk.
We have a 3 night minimum stay policy. From time-to-time 1 or 2 night stays may become available during High Season. Two night stays are welcome during the 'off season'.
Please note that only the tenants renting this suite are permitted on the property.

We are two professional retired people
We purchased this home adoring the antiquity and history of the house. It was built in 1768 by a Quaker carpenter as a wedding present for his bride. The ceilings are amazingly high, the rooms airy, the house is gracious, and we adored the location in the heart of the Old Historic District. The island shuttle bus has a stop diagonally across from the house, making it easy to access this system that can shuttle you all around the island.
The home has a uniquely private backyard...a lovely lush oasis of flowers and trees in the middle of town. Hydrangeas, lilies, and Rose of Sharon are just a few of the many plants decorating this professionally landscaped yard. The yard is surrounded by mature evergreen hedges providing for both shade and privacy. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the blue stone patio and furnishings...a great place for breakfast, for a cold drink at the end of the day, or for relaxing with a book.
The Captain's Suite was superbly clean. We had an easy time running back and forth from town and activities. It was great to be able to go get cleaned up or take a few minutes to rest in between. The owner is great about communicating before and during the trip. We went for a ladies' weekend, and it was ideal. We did not rent a car, but rented bikes instead. You could get by without either as the island has helpful transportation, and the Captain's Suite is conveniently located for public transportation.
This trip was a mother/daughter trip and it could not have been better. The location was perfect, not too close to town, not too far away either. We wanted to do lots of sightseeing and shopping and this location fit the bill. The acomodations were very nice, and well received. Perfect for a small family vacation.
Location, location, location!
A charming and gracious former whaling captain's home within which is the The Captain's Suite. The suite SLEEPS 4 PEOPLE and is comprised of two bedrooms: one bedroom with a full size canopy bed, the second bedroom with 2 twin canopy beds. The suite is completed with a private bathroom that has a claw foot tub (high sides of the antique tub would not be suitable for some people) with shower...a wonderful place for bath lovers to soak, or for shower lovers to enjoy bathing at the end of a beach day. For your comfort, the suite has fans, two flat screen TV's, one a/c unit that covers both rooms. It has a mini kitchen with a small refrigerator, microwave, dishes, and Keurig coffee pot.
The Captain's Suite is accessed by the home's back staircase which is used by no one other than the guests in the suite. Because of the stairs, the suite would not be appropriate for anyone with mobility issues or difficulty climbing stairs. It is most suitable for a couple or for a family of four people. Families with small children should consider the advisability of a second floor suite with a staircase entering into the back bedroom.
As with any home built in 1768 current building codes, as we know them today, did not exist then. One enters a home that exudes the antiquity and building standards of it's time. Hand crafted beams with edges carefully hand 'beaded' add to the home's charm.
The home is situated on a one way cobblestone street in the heart of the town's historic district. For most, this property is an easy walk to 3 beaches, the island's fine dining, shopping, antiquing, the boat basin, a supermarket, museums, theaters, and two movie theaters. The Island Transit System has a stop at the end of the street...an easy way to get around the island.
Bring your bathing suit, casual clothes and a good book an be prepared to relax! Smell the salt air, feel the ocean breezes. The Whaling Museum is at the end of the street.
It would be our pleasure to help you to plan your holiday! Please review our rental calendar, and then feel free to call us between 9 am and 9 pm.
