About Dean and Debbie Bortz

The Bittersweet Guest House is nestled in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and is the boyhood home of the owner.

This 12-acre farm has been in the family for over 60 years and the land is still being farmed today. After inheriting this property over 4 years ago, the owner and his wife have extensively remodeled and lovingly refurbished this guesthouse. As guests turn into the country lane, they will be greeted by a peaceful retreat in all seasons for folks seeking a quiet refuge from busy city life. Relaxation begins the moment a guest steps into the home. The day’s missed deadlines and snarled traffic become distant memories while sitting on the front porch having a relaxing beverage. The owner’s continual dedication to detail has fostered an environment that is comfortable and cozy.

The Bittersweet Guest House is just minutes away from quaint villages, cycling events, professional baseball parks, wildlife sanctuaries, farmers markets, antique markets and the nearby cities of Allentown and Reading.

Dean and Debbie Bortz purchased this farmhouse in 2010

Loved it!

Felt like Home! Everything you need is covered, attention to every detail...kids loved the Halloween candy when we arrived. This was a beautiful place for our little family getaway visiting some of my favorite eastern PA spots. Highly recommend! Allison family, Orlando, FL

Perfect Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We came back for a second stay and a long weekend. The place was decorated with little touches of Halloween and Fall. So sweet! We really appreciated how Dean and Debbie go out of their way to make us feel at home.We arrived late on Friday and they had put some OJ and cream in the fridge (and a bag of ice) some bagels and bananas. So coffee next morning was easy b/c I would have forgot the cream! The place is so peaceful. You will not be disappointed.

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

There isn't much to say that other reviewers haven't said over and over. My elderly mother lives in PA, I live in Canada, and I needed a place to stay when I visit her. Over the last three years my husband and I have stayed here about eight times a year. It is like a second home and we feel very lucky to have found it, even though it is a 45 minute drive from my mother. Staying here is well worth the inconvenience of the drive. The only thing I can add to all the praise heaped on Bittersweet is the fact that it is a very allergen friendly house. We came to see the house when it was first listed because I am sensitive to chemicals and fragrances, cannot stay in hotels without feeling ill, and was having a hard time finding a rental that was suitable. Debbie and Dean have done everything they could possibly do to accommodate this problem.

I have not written a review until now for a very selfish reason - I knew that it would become very hard for me to book when I needed to visit my mother. Well, the cat has been out of the bag for a long time, and I offer my apologies to Debbie and Dean for not adding to the accolades sooner. They are incomparable hosts. And Bittersweet is the result of their ceaseless attention to details and hard work.

Owner's Response: Linda, First, there is absolutely no apology needed whatsoever! We have commented to each other many times over the last three years how fortunate we are to have you and Michael return and stay here. It has always been a pleasure to have you and Michael come back! You have expressed how much you enjoy staying here at the end of every visit, and it always feels so good to read those emails. But receiving and reading this review gave us such a overwhelming warm feeling, and we don't quite know how to adequately express our gratitude, but we really appreciate that you took the time to write this very special heartfelt review about how it feels for you to stay here at the Bittersweet!!! THANK YOU! Dean and Debbie

Away from it all.

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for a great space to unwind. Quiet, peaceful respite. We saw foxes and woodchucks and had wild black raspberries delivered to our door. One night, we enjoyed some wine from a local vineyard on the new patio while we grilled our dinner. Like the terminator, "we'll be back" 😉

Best rental house

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time at the Bittersweet Guest House! We were in town for a wedding but almost want to come back and stay at the house just for fun. Dean and Debbie were more than accommodating; they went above and beyond in every way. The house was spotless and very comfortable and peaceful. 10/10 would recommend.
