Enjoy your stay in a quaint farmhouse overlooking 12 acres of farmland. The guest house is just minutes off Interstate I-78 and is very easy to find. Our house sits back off the main road, Old Route 22, down a private, paved driveway. We are sure that you will feel at home because each room has a comfortable and cozy setting. The Berks, Lehigh County area has opportunities for many activities and sightseeing experiences such as wineries, hiking/bird watching at Hawk Mountain and bicycling at Rodale Park. Enjoy the areas festivals like Wheels of Time and Das Awkscht Fest both in Macungie, Allentown’s Mayfair, Kutztown’s Folk Festival and Bethlehem’s Musikfest. Renninger’s Farmers Market outside of Kutztown provides opportunities for shopping for local produce. The market is also the home of the Renninger’s Antique Market and Extravaganzas. Parents may like to visit their children attending Kutztown University, Cedar Crest College, Muhlenberg College, Lehigh University and Moravian College, which are all close by. After a day of exploring the area, you could enjoy cooking your own meal in a fully stocked kitchen or sit on the porch and enjoy a refreshing beverage. By chance you might see deer or foxes roaming through the property. So call and book your stay for any season.

About Dean and Debbie Bortz

The Bittersweet Guest House is nestled in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and is the boyhood home of the owner.

This 12-acre farm has been in the family for over 60 years and the land is still being farmed today. After inheriting this property over 4 years ago, the owner and his wife have extensively remodeled and lovingly refurbished this guesthouse. As guests turn into the country lane, they will be greeted by a peaceful retreat in all seasons for folks seeking a quiet refuge from busy city life. Relaxation begins the moment a guest steps into the home. The day’s missed deadlines and snarled traffic become distant memories while sitting on the front porch having a relaxing beverage. The owner’s continual dedication to detail has fostered an environment that is comfortable and cozy.

The Bittersweet Guest House is just minutes away from quaint villages, cycling events, professional baseball parks, wildlife sanctuaries, farmers markets, antique markets and the nearby cities of Allentown and Reading.

There is nowhere better!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have travelled all over the USA and stayed in all sorts of accommodation provided by private vendors for many years now and I can say without any doubt, Bittersweet Cottage is the best place we have ever stayed.

I defy anyone to be disappointed with any aspect of this cottage. It is located ideally for drives to Philadelphia, Lancaster County or if you are feeling more adventurous, New York, but is also well situated for a leisurely country drive in the immediate vicinity.

The cottage itself immediately feels like home, accentuated by the fact that Debbie and Dean are the most generous and welcoming of hosts. I think when you are there, you're family and that's how you're treated. On the other hand, if you want to be left to your own devices, then that's fine too. They are both very discreet.

All you need to take is your food supplies, but no need for anything else as Debbie provides cleaning supplies in abundance.

If you are going to Pennsylvania, self catering and you want a base that you will enjoy going back to time after time, look no further. This is for you.

After your day's travels, there is nothing better than sitting on the veranda with a glass of wine watching what is happening with the local wildlife at your back door......marvellous!

Thank you Dean and Debbie for making our stay as wonderful as it could possibly be.

Awesome Christmas holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this place to spend our Christmas holiday weekend and overall, the house was an excellent place to stay. The entire house was perfectly organized, the rooms were all beautifully decorated in Christmas theme, neat and spacious enough to share. The kitchen was well equipped with all amenities, utensils and crockery items. We did carry few Indian spices and for rest of the grocery items, the Wegman's is just a close drive by, so we didn't face any shortage. Also, the owners of the property were extremely helpful and nice people. They went out of their way and helped us with a list of restaurants to eat and places to visit. The house is located amid green lustrous green fields and is a perfect weekend gateway for friends and families. Would definitely recommend visiting this property and we would definitely love to go back again.

Outstanding Experience in All Respects

  • 5 of 5

From the first email and phone call, everything about our stay at the Bittersweet Guest House was peaceful and pleasant! My wife and I were in the area to connect with family in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. This Guest House served as a delightful and convenient home base. Dean and Debbie are very gracious, and they made us feel right at home.

The house itself is extremely well outfitted, and everything is first class. Spotlessly clean. Comfortable. Attractive.

We are looking forward to another opportunity to spend time at the Bittersweet Guest House. Thank you!

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Simply put, this is one gem of a rental property. The reviews are dead on, and my wife, my son, and I all agree with what the previous reviewers have stated. This home is flawless, and the setting is so peaceful. The location was a perfect fit for our needs, and we truly enjoyed our stay. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Dean and Debbie, they really go above and beyond when it comes to their property and your well being. Thank you both for everything. We hope to return again in the not to distant future.
