If a rainy day appears, I am happy relaxing, reading, writing and socializing under my skylights at 160 Hawthorne and unless the weather is severe I am going to be at the situm deck on the ocean with people who love it as much as I do.

Perfect host

Earl proved to be a perfect host. He worked with us to make sure we can stay over the original booked slot when we needed it. His instructions were very thorough and useful for making the most of our stay. The house is cozy comfortable and is well equipped. Access to the beach is close and convenient. Perfect quiet location

We are active oldsters coming together to honor our childhood friend who had recently passed away. After two long days of travel from the West Coast we found this house perfect for our needs. We needed 4 bedrooms 2 on each side of the house which provided privacy and both bedrooms sharing a bath between them. Two full baths and one downstairs next to the laundry room. We needed a fully stocked kitchen with dishwasher and good A/C. The owner was always available when needed. We were very happy with the house and location!

Great place, beautiful house, ideal for two families

The house is about 0.3 miles from the beach, placed in a community with private access to the beach. Two house is amazing for its two beautiful porches, of which one entirely screened. The house is spacious, and perfect for two families as it has 2 separate units of two bedrooms with a bathroom on each side. The beach is beautiful, not crowded at any time and the forest like environment around the house complete the perfect vacation atmosphere. Earl, the owner, was extremely responsive to all our needs and a great guide to the neighbourhood. Thank you Earl, we wouldlove to return!

Peaceful retreat

We had a wonderful stay in this serene location. Cool breezes and birdsong while out on the screened porch, and the murmur of the ocean from the front deck (the beach is just a short walk away). Our host was very helpful, with suggestions on local restaurants and shopping, and even provided information on safe travel for our daughter from Charlotte following Hurricane Matthew. The dogs also enjoyed their walks in this wooded neighborhood and on the beach. Would definitely return.

A private, relaxing retreat...perfect for families!

I am a longtime VRBO renter, our stay here was fantastic. Earl was very helpful during the planning and booking phase, responding to calls and emails quickly. Once we arrived we had great weather and spent almost all of our time by the ocean. Our end of the island was so peaceful, we were often the ONLY people at the beach! Parking in the private lot was easy, with a short walkway to the beach; the access was just 0.3 miles from the house. We had planned to go to the Aquarium and walk the trails at Roosevelt Preserve but never got there, the Pine Knoll Shores beach was just too perfect! We even went at night with flashlights to see the little crabs run around, great fun.

The house is roomy and comfortable, with plenty of space. Each side of the house has 2 bedrooms + a full bath, and a pocket door for privacy, helpful for families with younger children who need naps in the afternoon or go to bed early. The living room has skylights, a comfortable sofa, loveseat, and leather recliner. There is a full sized table for family meals, or a bar with stools for a quick bowl of cereal or a snack. Everything we needed in the kitchen was there, including utensils, towels, basics like coffee filters and napkins, pots and pans, and cleaning supplies. Our relatives were in Atlantic Beach & we ate out with them most nights, but if you prefer cooking the kitchen has lots of space and a dishwasher for easy cleanup. There is a screened porch on the back of the house where my daughter enjoyed eating breakfast; another full-length porch on the front has a wonderful view of the trees. We brought our bicycles and beach gear, so the full open basement under the house with a double garage was helpful. (Some toys and beach chairs are already there.) Being able to park inside also made packing up at the end of the week much simpler. The basement has a full bathroom, and a laundry room with a full-sized washer and dryer.

The property is a corner lot and has a lot of privacy, and the neighborhood is quiet and excellent for bike riding and walking. Our favorite place to eat was the Crab's Claw in Atlantic Beach, we met relatives there Tuesday and the seafood was so delicious (hint: crab cake!) that we ate there again the last night. Driving on and off the island was no problem as the mainland bridge was right in Atlantic Beach. We could not have asked for a more relaxing vacation and were sorry to have to leave. Thank you, Earl....we will be back!

Renters have gate passes to this beach with a private parking lot, a very large situm deck on the top of the dunes overlooking the ocean for sight seeing, one can enjoy lunch or dinner on the large wooden tables provided with substantial bench seating on two levels. The beach is clearly marked down to the ocean & owner volunteers maintain this excellent amenity.

Pine Knoll Shores is considered by many North Carolinians as one the state's finest beaches because of it extensive maritime forest, being a community that is overwhelmingly made up of single family detached homes on wooded lots, the absence of the commercialism abundant in the adjoining town of Atlantic Beach & on Highway 70 in Morehead City over the bridge connecting the east end of Bogue Banks barrier island to the mainland. It is a short drive over the bridge to the mass marketers you will leave at home including Walmart, Kmart, Staples, Belks, Best Buy, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Foods, Lowes for hardware, lumber & flowers, trees, etc. and many others.

On the the barrier island is located Ace Hardware, Food Lion, Bogue Banks Public Library with free computer use [1/2 mile from 160 Hawthorne], a book store with NYT & WSJ each day, a movie theater, critical mass of bait and tackle shops, boat launching facilities & numerous good restaurants [I provide a list of them above]. Another important convenience to renters is the closeness of the house to island's east end bridge to the mainland, Morehead City & Beaufort. This east-west barrier island is connected to the mainland by two bridges. On the mainland, Morehead City on the east and Swansboro on the west, the commercial establishments possess greater depth and more sophistication on the island's east end, than one finds on the more isolated west end that serves Emerald Isle & Swansboro. It is a twenty five mile island with 35 and 45 mile an hour speed limits in the towns of Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach & Emerald Isle. On this island, location is importantly connected to service conveniences. The heaviest concentration of skilled workmen is definitely more concentrated and available on the east end of it including automobile agencies & repair from Morehead City to New Bern.

The living area floor plan provides two bedrooms & a full bath on each side of grand public room. Each side has a pocket door that can be closed if one wishes more privacy. The house was built in 1990 by two sisters who

created a place to comfortably house two families or two couples. All four bedrooms have ceiling fans.

The east side has a queen size bed in one room and standard bed in the other with a TV, two chests with mirrors in each room, with numerous drawers & a large two door closet in each room. There is a full bathroom with a shower, sliding doors and a mirror over the sink. Also, on this side, on the interior hallway, are two smaller closets, one used for sheets, towels and other necessities & the other available for use.

On the west side, there are two bedrooms one with a king side bed, a chest with numerous drawers, a mirror, lamps, a large two door closet & a TV. The other bedroom has a standard size bed & a half bunk style bed. Also, it has a large chest with numerous drawers & a mirror. Further, there is a computer, with wireless internet in this bedroom. On this side, there is a full bathroom with a large mirror, numerous drawers below the sink & a closet for towels, sheets, etc. It has a shower & tub combination for bathing.

The grand room possesses two sofas, a large coffee table, two end tables with large lamps, a dark blue leather recliner, with a floor lamp & a TV with cable. This room, the bedrooms & hallways are all covered in an indoor carpet. There is a large ceiling fan in this living area.

The kitchen has a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, extensive utensils, knives, forks, spoons, knives for cooking, pots, pan, coffee pot, table and chairs, with four stools at a counter for children.

A large Western style porch runs the full length of the house, front and back. The back porch is screened in with cushioned outdoor furniture. The front porch has four large chairs & two table.

The yard fills with large pine trees, ferns, berry trees & living oaks. The yard is natural with a pine straw bed. The concrete driveway is located off of Mimosa with the house address on 160 Hawthorne.

There is a double driveway & 1100 sq. ft. basement for a small boat, storage and two cars.
