Home of the Terrapin King

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

The house sits at the end of Hammock Point. Not shown accurately on the map.

The LaVallette House is where the Maryland terrapin originated! Albert T. LaVallette, Jr., launched the terrapin soup industry from this very site. (You can still see the old terrapin pins beside the driveway.) In addition to the property’s historic charm, the location just can’t be beat. The three-bedroom house is completely private. Guests have to drive through wetlands to get it, and the only neighbors in close proximity are the gulls and the fish in the Chesapeake Bay. The house is surrounded on three sides by water; you can see the Bay from all of its windows. Outside, you can sun yourself on the private beach, sit with a cool drink on the front porch, fish and crab from the bulkhead, or launch your boat or kayak from the dock. And the fishing’s great from the front yard! You hardly ever need to leave this place—but if do you want to get out, downtown Crisfield offers charming restaurants, shops, an ice cream parlor, and plenty of places to get fresh crabs. Crisfield is known as the “Crab Capital of the World.” This home is unlike any other. It’s a perfect spot for family vacations, friends’ getaways, or writing retreats. It’s been in our family for 15 years. We love it dearly and know you will, too!

This Queen Anne Victorian was built in the late 1800's. The main floor features a large updated kitchen with seating for 8-10; a family room with a game table, flat screen TV, DVD player, and stereo; a formal dining area; a sitting room with a futon that sleeps two; and a Captain's room with books, desk, and panoramic views of the Bay. There is also a bedroom with twin bunks on this floor and a large full bath and laundry area.

Upstairs, the master bedroom features a widow's walk for two, a queen size bed, and furniture to lounge on. There is a full bath across the hall. The second bedroom features two double beds. The house is spacious with lots of room to spread out.

There is also a screened porch, an open porch, and an outside shower! A two-person kayak is available to launch from the beach and explore the natural wonders that surround this local treasure.

Please note: This charming home is quite old and thus does not have central air conditioning. It does, however, have window units in all of the bedrooms, the Captain's room, and the family room. Screened windows also offer great ventilation!

About Virginia Liberatore

Purchased in 1999 as a weekend project and retreat. We spent the next 5 years getting the house updated so that family and friends could visit and enjoy this historic property. As anyone who owns a home knows, the work is never done. Our home has been the sight of many happy and sad memories. After my husband's passing, I listed it with a local realtor for several years and in 2014 I placed it on the VRBO site. I have been pleased with the responce and look forward to sharing my home with many others in the future.

Why Virginia Liberatore chose Crisfield

This location is one of a kind! In the last year, LaVallette has beeen getting a much needed FACE LIFT. Beginning in 2017, new insulation and siding was added to the exterior along with new screens on side and front porch. In 2018, the work continues with a new coat of paint on the metal rood and new exterior doors. Finally some native grasses and other plantings have been added to enhance the overall appearance for renters to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

For the traveler who seeks peace, isolation and panoramic views of the bay this property delivers. The town of Crisfield can be seen in the distance and is a short bike ride away. Set your sight in another direction and you can see Smith, Tangier Island and the unspoiled shores of Jenkins Creek. While the house has been comfortably updated, it still contains 4 original fireplaces from this homes storied past. The chimneys have been landmarks for boaters for more than 100 years. It is especially well suited for star gazers, birders, kayakers or anyone who loves nature and getting away from the frenzy of our digital world.

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as described. The location was absolutely beautiful with water views from almost every window! We enjoyed being surrounded by nature, the egrits, herons, and of course crabs! We had fun crabbing and even invited some of them to dinner :))

Kayaking was a plus, and the sunsets were amazing. We had a great week with our family.

Beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

Overall this is one of the most beautiful settings with water on three sides. Even with rainy weather, we enjoyed our time. Saw some amazing lightning shows from the screened porch. We crabbed, swam and kayaked. Took the ferry to Smith Island for lunch and checked out the local library, nearby sandy beach and play ground and the pier. Not much in the local town. The Gift Vault was so cute with a lot of neat things. Highly recommend a stop there.

The house is older and rustic but we had most everything we needed. We planned our own activities for down time and found that the days flew by.

Owner's Response: Thanks Dolores! You can't beat the views from the house no matter what room your in. Thunderstorms are an awesome sight but can be a bit loud with the metal roof if the rain is heavy. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. By the way, thanks for organizing the shed! Happy Summer! Ginny

The vacation we have been looking for

  • 5 of 5

My husband's mother was born and raised on Tylerton, one of the 3 islands making up Smith Island. Every summer growing up they would return to the island to spend time with family and friends. In our 60's now we can remember these trips with our own children and passing your house with the blue roof on the way out of Chrisfield, always wondering who lived there and hearing all kinds of stories from the locals. When we saw your house offered on VRBO we could not pass the chance up to stay there. The house did not disappoint. This house and the property surrounding it is as close as you can get to being on the islands without being there. Our grown children visited with their children and none wanted to leave. In fact they all want to return next year! If anyone is looking for a complete change of pace and a chance to return to a time where live seemed to just slow down and everyone you pass waves to you, this is the place. And the fishing was as good as advertised!

Owner's Response: Laura, Thanks so much for your kind words. The surroundings bring me such peace and just watching the boats go by is a fun preoccupation. I drive down from Silver Spring and can often be heard complaining about the traffic but once I am there on the point I forget everything. I can just relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. I am happy to share it with like minded people! Enjoy the rest of your summer, Ginny Liberatore

Really great comfortable house with most beautiful scenery anywhere.

  • 5 of 5

Our week stay was everything we expected. Upon arrival the view from outside the house was breathtaking. Once inside we found everything in order and were awed by the beauty. The crabbing was fantastic as we had fresh crab to eat every day and we caught them ourselves from the pier. We were also able to secure our boat to the pier the whole tiime we were there. The weather cooperated by only raining for about 20 minutes the whole week. The setting of the house is so private that we heard only the occasional passing boat and the fireworks display on Saturday night. We spent several afternoons swimming and also enjoyed watching the egrets in the wetlands. We slept well on the comfortable beds.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this house to everyone.

Owner's Response: Dear Roger, Thanks so much for your review. I have worked hard over the years to ensure my visitors have a comfortable and inviting place to stay. It can be a magical place. I hope you enjoyed the serenade of the frogs and the magnificant night sky. So glad the weather was good and the bugs stayed away! Regards, Ginny Liberatore

An amazing Memorial weekend!

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a wonderful weekend at the LaVallette House! It is a beautiful and quiet location surrounded by water and waves. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking and caught enough crabs for a feast. The house is old and worn but it had everything we needed and was clean. Unfortunately storms shortened our trip but we hope to return one day to enjoy the beauty of the Bay and this serene location.
