Our most popular rental is the new lake cabin, which is independent and sits across the lawn from the featured white farmhouse. The cabin has 2 bedrooms - one with a new California King bed that can separate into 2 long twin beds, and a queen bed in the second bedroom. There is also a new daybed in the living area for a 5th individual, and cots to add if there are extra beds needed. The cabin has its own kitchen, bath with shower, dining area, and private lakeview deck. Ceiling fans in every room circulate our "mountain air conditioning".
In the White Farmhouse, there are 2 rental units: the Master suite 2nd floor with private bath and balcony, queen bed, ceiling fan and an adjoining room with 3 singles; Another unit in the white farmhouse is the large front "quilt" room which has a new king bed and a single bed in one bedroom, with an adjoining bedroom across the hall with a double and single bed; each of these 2BR suites has common areas of kitchen, dining, sitting, and living room downstairs in farmhouse. Common side porch for sitting and quiet reading or playing lawn sports in the side yard.
This mountain property has been in our family since 1976. It was an active Bed and Breakfast for 10 years, from about 1984-1994. The owners, Harold and Trudy Spangler, were from Greensboro, N.C., where he worked as a pediatrician for 30 years before they both retired to be a mountain couple, and eventually agreeing to be hosts of a B & B. 5 children and 13 grandchildren have their fondest memories sleeping, playing, and passing a cool summer day and evening on the lawn and in the houses, seeing the fall foliage in the autumn, and enjoying getting away from the city.
Ann S. Vernon purchased this cabin in 1976
This property is right on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and leads to Roanoke, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, and many historic sites, including Mabry Mill. Floyd, Galax, Abingdon (Barter Theater), Virginia Creeper Trail, Fancy Gap, and Chateau Morrisette are close by for adventure and special events.
Clean mountain air and water. Absence of modern distractions, such as the telephone ringing and the chores of home. Time to read and enjoy the beautiful setting; stars brilliant in the night sky, sounds of birds and bullfrogs in the meadow and lake. Very close to major events in the summer and fall at nearby parkway and winery venues. Porches for sitting and rocking, decks for enjoying the lake, meadow and lawn for badminton and crocquet. Unplug from your busy home and work life to this quiet non-technological setting. Our motto is unplug and unwind.
We were looking for a spot to go "off the grid" and this was it! Convenient to Floyd where my BFF is buried we also found it to be a convenient location for exploring. Right along the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounded by natural beauty we wandered to Mayberry, Mt. Airy (the other Mayberry), Eden, Danville, Martinsville and Lover's Leap, all purely by accident. And every evening we came back to peace and comfort in the quiet woods with homeowners who checked in to make sure we had everything we could need to enjoy our stay!
One small issue was quickly taken care of by the owners. Ann, Dave and Jerry greeted us the next morning and we took them up on their hospitality of eating breakfast with them. What a treat to sit and enjoy their company and fill our bellies before a long days ride. Thank you for opening you doors to us we had a great stay.
We had a lovely 4-day stay at this wonderful property and enjoyed the feeling of stepping back in time to Grandma's house. We slept in late under beautiful quilts, woke to fruit baskets and fresh cut vases of flowers, fished from a boat on the lake on property, and traded recipes and fireside chats in the evening with the owners who were at our beck and call. We attended The Black Dog Beach Music Festival at Chateau Morrisette nearby, stocked up on delicious wine for our holiday season, and enjoyed a dinner in the gourmet restaurant of Chateau Morrisette. We even managed to squeeze in visiting local art galleries and sites of interest in Floyd and took in the nearby Mabry Mill. Everything was just as we had hoped, and this is a property you will long to return to again.
