For Us 5 Stars!
Between 2 of our favorite places: Beaufort and Hunting Island, S.P. Great for a paddler and/or cyclist (great ride to Fripp Island from here).
I liked the vibe of the development. It's nice but not overly uptight for the typical non-partying family-oriented guest. Residents told us the beach is never overly crowded. The beach here was way better than I expected and there are nice semi-wildish areas on either end of it. Although the place includes a reasonable, seaworathy 1-person kayak, I am a paddling snob and circumnavigated my tippy but fast boat around Harbor Island (about a 9 mile trip). Lots of paddling options for serious paddlers. I also paddled the short trip around the point to Hunting Island where admission is free if accessed by kayak. Beach changed with hurricane and in one spot houses are now inundated by tide. Not nice but interesting to see the radical changes that occur on beac
Harbor Rec center has nice, has a nice, cozy feeling. Pool is not heated and was chilly for the kids in early April. They did play in the surf. Marsh views were great and we saw lots of wildlife including gators (small on this island). Gay's Seafood is down the road if you want fresh off the boat seafood.
The House/Property - We liked the house a lot. Living space/kitchen is on top, bedrooms on next level down, and parking/breezeway below. Kitchen was plenty nice for us, and living areas were comfortable. We are not TV people and didn't use the TV's.
I did see a little dirt/dust in a lower kitchen cabinet. I didn't see any bugs inside at all. If you are OCD/need everything perfect and/or are a clean freak then you might not be happy here. I didn't think it was anywhere as bad as the one negative review indicated. We liked the layout and living spaces. There is an open deck on the top floor and a roofed/shaded deck accessible by both adult bedrooms below. Decking on the top deck is weathered and we had a couple of folks get splinters. Decks had hurricane damage but a contractor came by to look at them during our stay. But if used with caution and common sense they should be just fine. Probably they will be fixed soon.
Golf cart was handy for quick beach trips and all the appliances worked fine. Good pressure and nice hot water in showers. Outdoor showers had been hammered by the hurricane but hoses and spigots were plentiful for washing off kids, suits, and gear. Nice yard to hang out in and view the Marsh.
Great stay with the family
Michael was great at communicating and very accomodating. We had a great time. View of the marsh is awesome and it's only a 5 or so minute walk to the beach.
The location was lovely and the house design was decent...
but.....first impressions mean a lot. There is substantial hurricane damage that needs to be addressed. Screening and carpentry repair is needed especially on the lower balcony area.
All the carpet is in need of replacement, not due to wear, but lack of routine cleaning. The stains are throughout the carpeted areas, especially the stairwell.
Beds were comfortable but lack of decent linens was a bummer. Actually the bath linens were of decent quality but many were damaged due to staining or not enough to service the unit.
A major problem was the build-up of grime on the kitchen cabinetry. Although there was enough cooking equipment we chose not to prepare meals due to the overall dirty conditions in the kitchen. Garbage disposer had an electrical problem. Since we had
two engineers in residence they were able to override the issue. Clearly the cleaning
crew is doing a minimal job. Only place we have every rented where we were expected to
make certain the linens were laundered before we left. This doesn't cover the soiled torn
furniture, cockroaches, lack of TV instructions, and just generally poor condition of the
place. By the way, we left a day early. Do we get a refund? I do have photos.
Oh..one more thing. The dryer only worked on the "auto" cycle.
Over all our vacation was absolutely great. The house and the owner were both more than we could have asked for. Other than some lingering issues from the hurricane last year the house was great. The pictures of the house and views do not do it justice. The only real issue we had (to not fault of the owner) was the day we arrived the refrigerator stopped working. I contacted the owner and he had a new one delivered and set-up the next day. Over all great house, great view, and outstanding owner.
Well stocked, comfortable home.
Great location, wonderful view of the marsh and great wildlife viewing.
Very spacious, clean and equipped house, with good location. Exactly what we needed. We were 2 parents with 3 teenagers, we never felt, that the house is to "busy".
You don't need to bring with you nothing but the clothes.
30 min to historic beaufort sc . 1 hour to Charleston and about the same to savannah and Hilton head
