Nestled just 14 miles outside of Beaufort, Harbor Island is truly a quaint little island paradise. It boasts the most incredible three miles of pristine white beaches that are surrounded by lush lowcountry vegetation. Our seaside cottage captures the breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape, as well as, the abundant wildlife that frolic about the island.
This home is decorated in a 'pottery barn' motif with a splash of color and summer fun. The great room has a two story vaulted ceiling with skylights that allow the sunbeams to dance across the Italian travertine tile below. This family area is furnished with oversized couches (sleepers) and chairs to allow for comfortable and relaxing evenings. The 'surf's up' game room joins the family room and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. It has numerous books and magazines for all interest; puzzles, cards, and games for a night of fun.
The master suite encompasses one-third of the total square footage of the house. This stunning area is set off by a beautiful king-size bed dressed in exquisite linens. The spa/jacuzzi tub area is spilling over with romance. Candles and lush greenery surround the tub as you meditate to the gentle lapping sounds of the ocean waves. The second bedroom is setup with a queen-size bed that overlooks the english garden below. The third bedroom has built-in bunks just perfect for kids!
The light and airy kitchen is equipt with all the amenities of home. The sub-zero refrigerator and Jenn-Aire stove-top make cooking a breeze. The dining table allows you to watch the sunrise each morning and sip on a cup of coffee as a parade of shrimp boats pass by out to sea. Off the front of the house is a large deck perfect to lounge around on and capture the sunkist look or grill up the fresh catch of the day. As you venture outside; you will be amazed at how close you are to the earth. This is the closest house to the water on the island. There is no need to pack up beach toys and chairs, they are just steps away from the house. A bathroom, as well as, two heated showers are also at your doorstep.
Harbor Island Beach is ideal for children the gentle surf and tide pools allow enjoyment for all ages. You can take in surfing, shrimping, fishing, and dolphin watching without ever leaving this vacation paradise. For the more active type, the beach and the racquet club is a skip away and offers a beautiful large pool directly on the marsh. It is a nature lover's paradise with a protected egret sanctuary and a huge protected osprey nest. It also offers a baby pool,a volleyball court, a kid's playground, a gift/ice cream shop, tennis court, and a indoor fitness center. Just minutes away is Hunting Island State Park and abundant amount of rivers and creeks that offer excellent opportunities for additional boating and fun.
Great location! Love the close proximity to beach! Enjoyed our stay. Can't wait to go back!
We stayed at this home for a family vacation with our three young children. Staying oceanfront with three young kids (five and under) is so worth the cost. Being able to walk off the deck into the ocean (literally) is so worth every penny rather than lugging all your beach stuff on a long hot walk to the beach. That being said and reading the last two reviews where they described the house being in disrepair, I think the price is reasonable for being an oceanfront home on a private gated island in prime season. For a house that is a little nicer and also oceanfront, you could easily pay a thousand to two thousand more dollars or more. We found the house clean with dated furniture (couches especially) but overall we were very satisfied with the property. For the convenience of being THAT close to the ocean, and having a very reasonable price, you are going to have some tradeoffs. The house is in a good location, easily walkable to the pool. It was a little disappointing to not being able to walk on the beach in the evenings (tide dependent). The ocean literally comes under the house during high tide and there is no beach sometimes. This house has beautiful views, and the back enclosed porch overlooking the ocean is so great. We spent a lot of time there. Also having tons of beach toys for kids, beach towels, a high chair, an exersaucer (for babies) was really handy. I would add that the pillows and linens could be upgraded, but they weren't bad. The owner was very easy to communicate with, and quick to respond.
I love this little beach house. It's roomy yet cozy! It's truly beachfront! The covered porch is great for when it's too hot on the beach or the deck. With plentiful linens provided, you cannot beat the value. We look forward to returning to this wonderful beachfront getaway.
If you've never been to Harbor Island you really aren't missing much unless your a retiree then this is a good place I'd think. The town of Beaufort is 28mins away each way and shopping, restaurants, gas stations etc. are about 20mins each way. The beach in Harbor is not nice in my opinion and I've been all over So Carolina and beaches all over the world. The water is quite dirty and the clay bottom is just disgusting tar on your feet. All that being said this house is poor to fair. I say that because of the non-cleanliness and lack of attention to any interior furniture/fixtures and exterior for that matter. The house is definitely the shack on Harbor Island! When I spoke to the owner immediately upon our arrival she was compassionate about the house problems and compensated us a bit for them. The problem is the house just does not seem to be seriously cared for. Their are sooo many outdated, old, run down things it just needs an overhaul. I will say the closeness to the ocean was somewhat chill but on the days the tide did what it wanted you never really got any beach! I will give one piece of advice from a So Carolina LOVER... If your looking for an awesome beach go to Charleston County beaches..any of them!
For the deeply discounted price you get a house right on the beach! That being said, there are some trade offs. The house is in need of a serious deep-cleaning. Within the 1st ten minutes of being in the house our feet were completely black! They did send someone out two days later, but I ended up buying a wet swifter and cleaning the floors myself. Not everything is in good working order. The DVD player was missing a cable, so we weren't able to watch Dvd's. Also, they need to clarify their description of the property. First, there are only 2 baths, not 3(at least we couldn't find it.) There is only one outdoor shower, which is cold water only. The guest bedroom balcony looks out onto overgrown shrubs-NOT an English garden. The linens are old, frayed and stained. Very misleading. Understanding that a year round vacation rental on the beach is hard to maintain, but having a clean property with everything in good working order is a must. The house itself may only last til the next big storm, so maybe the owners have decided not to invest anymore time or money into this property. I don't know...but people should be aware of why this house is the cheapest oceanfront home on Harbor Island.
