About Mary Kaufmann

The Deschutes River is one of the most famous fisheries in the lower 48 states, year around trout fishing plus surface orientated steelhead attract fly anglers the world over and as avid fly fisherman it is what drew us to the river as well!

The consistent climate, easy access from Portland (only 3-stop signs once you enter the interstate) and a friendly relaxed small-town atmosphere is a strong magnet. Living alongside the rivers 'white noise' is relaxing and calming, plus it has a cooling effect. Wildlife frequently observed include deer, otter, osprey, night hawks, swallows and quail. Life is slow and and peaceful here.

Mary Kaufmann purchased this house in 1980

Why Mary Kaufmann chose Central Oregon

Riverside property is scarce on the Deschutes River. There are only a handful of such properties in Maupin and there is something special about living 'riverside.' It is the sound of rushing water, wildlife, the Milky Way at night, yet being close to town and easy access to the the city.

Juniper, sage, high desert, the beautiful basalt cliffs of the Deschutes River Canyon and the fresh smell of the river will ignite your senses! We can pretty much guarantee you won't want to leave the deck all day and at night we love to sit on the deck and watch the stars come out!

What makes this house unique

The sound of the river, beautiful trout and steelhead and the wonderful climate are some of the reasons we love this location. Sunshine most every day and clear skies at night make this a perfect spot to relax and unwind! Reach Maupin via the beautiful Columbia Gorge and enjoy the scenic drive, waterfalls, fruit orchards and wineries and go home via Mt Hood to get a taste of Oregon's tallest mountain and some beautiful alpine scenery! You will see some of Oregon's most unique geography and get a glimpse of what makes this area so special!

Perfect House on the Deschutes River

  • 5 of 5

I had family in town for a special occasion and rented this home for relatives and myself for 5 days. The accommodations were very clean, very comfortable and in a beautiful setting. We had 8 people at the home and we had plenty of room for everyone. There was newly installed tile and hardwoods on the main floor that were just gorgeous. It was nicely updated. Since we had so many people we used the large spacious kitchen and had every appliance we needed. We spent a lot of time on the deck in the relaxing adirondak chairs watching the river go by. When we wanted adventure we headed in to town for a raft trip. This home has great parking for vehicles, great bedroom set up, lots of privacy with 3 floors and just overall superb accomodations. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Well maintained, new hardwood floors, comfy furniture, and an outstanding deck. We had 7 in our group and there was plenty of beds and three full baths.

Great location for fishing and enjoying Maupin

  • 5 of 5

This house is filled with fishing history and provides a great place to gather after hole hopping the Deschutes. Centrally located just after the bridge, it's a easy drive up river to locked gate, down river or simply walk down to the next meadow. The Oasis restaurant and the fly shop are within walking distance as well.

With tons of bunk beds, this house easily slept our group of 6 there for a guys fishing weekend. The kitchen was full of everything we needed for cooking up late night meals. An extra shout out to the owner, Mary, who helped make sure everything went smoothly.

We will be back!

Great house, perfect location, tons of character

  • 5 of 5

I arranged this house for a group of friends to meet up and fish the Deschutes river over the weekend. Mary was very helpful and everything went smoothly as far as the logistics of the rental. The house is great, full of great fishing history, beautiful deck, and plenty of room. There is a nice gas BBQ on the back deck and a fully stocked kitchen, the house was clean and comfortable. We were already talking about doing it again next year before we even left.

The most memorable stay!

  • 5 of 5

The views, the house, and history made me humbled just to be there . Walking in was like a rabbit hole full of rainbows and unicorns for a flyfisherman and tyer like myself. The views and location are unbelievable and walking distance to town to get some really good food and brews. We found ourselves lost on the deck, or dug into the couch a time or two at high sun, reading books and studying fly patterns; that we forgot that we were there to fish. This trip was for my dad, who retired a couple weeks prior from 40yrs in the coal mines. Thank you for making it unforgettable! See you next year!

Maupin is a high-desert community located on a bluff overlooking the Wild & Scenic Deschutes River canyon. It is famous for its world class fly fishing for both rainbow trout (called Redsides) and steelhead...and for white water rafting.

Maupin is 120 miles east of Portland via the scenic Columbia River Gorge, 45 miles south of The Dalles and 90 miles north of Bend. In addition to the outdoor activities, there is a very nice market, restaurants, bars and several rafting and fishing operations.

Access to Mt Hood (year around skiing at Timberline, Alpine Slide at Government camp, backpacking, etc.), central Oregon, eastern Oregon, the Columbia Gorge, historic Shaniko, Native Americans dip netting for salmon at nearby Sherars Falls, and the Lewis and Clark Museum at The Dalles ensure plenty of possible exploratory side trips.

Roadside anglers can access 30 miles of river, 5 miles upstream and 25 miles downstream from the house. There is no direct access to the river from the house property because of a high bank and thick vegetation.

Whitewater rafters can 'put-in' 5 miles above the house and raft for 5 or more miles, enjoying Class 2, 3 and 4 rapids thru the fastest drop on the lower Deschutes. If you're not an experienced rafter, there are several rafting companies in town you can hire to guide your group.

Do-it-yourself or single to multi-day guided float trips are available thru the un-roaded sections of the river, both for whitewater enthusiasts and anglers.

Mid-summer weather is hot and dry with temperatures typically ranging between 50-60 at night and 85 to 100 during the day. Summer water temps are usually in the 60s.

During spring and fall, cooler air and water temperatures prevail.
