The bio bay in vieques is the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world with photoplankton that glow bright green when stirred. An amazing site to behold and a must stop on this trip!

The property boasts over a dozen mature fruit trees including: banana, mango, guava, noni, papaya, sour orange, avacado, limon, and sugar apple. Come visit and live off the land!

The waters edge is less than 1000 feet from the door and El Malecon is just two short blocks away. Stop in to the visitor's center a short distance from the house to learn more about the history of the island and people.

We look forward to your visit to this magical island of Vieques!

Perfect home base for enjoying Vieques's beaches and the laid back town of Esperanza.

If you are looking for a squeaky clean, very comfortable central location with hosts who respond quickly and efficiently, rent this property! Mikkel and Angela provide exactly what they represent - a beach cottage with lots of towels, handy washer/dryer, plenty of comfortable beds in a super convenient location. If you appreciate the beauty of a beach car, their car is great and it saves you $60/day rental plus the time of picking up your car. The publicos are easy to pick up at the airport/ferry and you can call to schedule a pickup on your departure day. Our family of four (19 yr old son, 15 yr old son and ourselves) enjoyed the chance to live in the neighborhood and experience, if only vicariously, the culture. We would absolutely rent this house again.

Must do's: Bio Bay nighttime tour - we recommend Coqui tours, ask for Heather - she's the bomb! Lazy Jack's - everything we ate there was fantastic, the staff is friendly and it's a great place to relax, enjoy a cold drink and watch the folk flow in and out. John & Steve have built a tasty menu utilizing fresh, fresh ingredients! La Dulce Esperanza - little bakery right around the corner. Oh my! Someone in that kitchen knows their way around pastry. The little store next door to the bakery is great for grabbing a few items. If you want to really stock your kitchen, head over to Isabella Sequnda and hit the Morales supermarket. The Burger Guys - we don't know the name of the business but they are almost directly across the road from the entrance to the National Wildlife Refuge. Look for the green and blue buildings. Get the double burger with the standard fixings. The ABSOLUTE BEST BURGER ANY OF US HAVE EVER EATEN!! Bar none and we've eaten a lot of burgers because beef doesn't get any better. Little corner store where the locals hang out at night and enjoy a cold beer (again, don't know the name) - walk on past the bakery and turn right at the corner (baseball field on the left corner). You'll see the little store. We stopped in once or twice to buy a Medalla Light. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Belly Buttons for breakfast - amazing french toast! Our votes for best beaches are Caracas and Sun Bay. Sun Bay has some interesting fish if you snorkel on the deeper side of the rocks. La Plata and Navio are fun, too, but watch the roads!

Smile, pat the dogs, scratch the cats, say "hi" to everyone you pass and enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Comfortable and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

After a long, hot, tiring day waiting in line for the Vieques ferry (one of them had broken down, so there was only one available that day...), it was a relief to finally arrive at our little cottage. It is a quaint place on a quiet street with a little grocery store within walking distance, just blocks from the waterfront. For us, the SUV Angel and Mikkell include with the rental was invaluable! It allowed us to easily explore Esperanza and all the beaches. Also, their local caretaker, Alberto, was fantastic! He picked us up from the ferry dock, and happily shared all sorts of info with us along the drive. On our last day, he even went to the ferry office and purchased our return tickets for us so we wouldn't have to wait in line. 5 stars! We can't wait to return!

Esperanza Beauty!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 recently stayed in this wonderful cottage in Esperanza. This was our second time in Vieques but first time staying in Esperanza. We were welcomed by Alberto who is fabulous! He checked up on us later in the week and gave us a loaf of fresh baked pumpkin bread, he's so sweet! We were able to drop off our bags just before our check in time. This made things very convenient for us so we were able to visit the Malecon and have a few much needed drinks!

The house was very clean and well stocked with extra sheets, blankets, towels, and beach towels. I believe there were 5 chairs (which worked out well for us!) and a few snorkeling items in the house.

The A/C worked really well at cooling the house quickly. I wish the windows had screens so you could open the windows. There is some sort of plastic film where the screens should be (perhaps to help keep the house cold when the A/C is on?).

I think the kitchen is fairly well stocked but if you have a large group, be prepared to wash dishes each day. It could also use a few more ice trays for the freezer. I wish the house had a cooler for taking drinks to the beach but we went to the local grocery store and purchased a foam cooler for $5. Hopefully it's still there when you visit! We also had to purchase a drink pitcher for the house to make iced tea.

The car was a very nice addition to the house. We had to rent a jeep when visiting in 2016 and it's not cheap! While the rodeo is nothing glamorous and the speedometer doesn't work, it gets you where you need to go. This house is also very close to a grocery store and bakery (3 minute walk) and the malecon/beach (10 minute walk).

The washer and dryer were an added bonus for the trip as well!

You'll have some animal friends stop by, chickens, roosters, cats, and horses. They're all friendly, just don't feed them!

I'd absolutely recommend staying in this house if you're visiting Vieques. It's in the best location on the island and a quiet part of Esparanza. If we ever visit again (which I'm sure we will) this is where we'll be staying!

Rustic Vieques at its best

  • 5 of 5

Loved this cosy cottage-well appointed, clean and in a great location!! Easy walking distance to many fun beach restaurants on the Strip (Malecon). Enjoyed fine evenings at Lazy Jack's and at Bananas and had a great breakfast at Belly Buttons- great food/great service. Alberto also was very good to deal with-would stay at this place again anytime!!

Charming house with everything we needed. Another great trip!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th trip to Vieques but our first time staying in Esperanza. We were travelling with our 2 kids, 19 and 22, and we wanted to stay closer to town. This house was perfect and the location is great. There is a bakery and small grocery store just around the corner. The Malecon, with all its shops and restaurants, is only a short walk. The neighborhood seemed safe and quiet. Friendly neighbors. The island car is a big bonus and was perfect for running all over the island. The house came with everything we needed and is in great shape. Very clean. Mikkell has done a lot of recent updates including a new front door with a convenient keypad lock, new stove, washer and dryer and A/C units. There are plenty of towels, snorkel gear, beach chairs and even a hair dryer. The only thing we picked up was a small ice chest for the beach which we left at the house. We like to cook and the kitchen was well equipped. The bedrooms were large with very comfortable beds. Mikkell was easy to work with, responsive and accommodating.

The highlights of our trip included snorkeling at Mosquito pier and the sunken boat off Esperanza beach, sea glass hunting, kayak fishing behind Blue beach, Playa Negra and a couple lazy days at Playa Grande and the eastern refuge beaches. There is great fresh seafood for sale at the pescaderia in Isabel. Coqui Fire was a great dinner. We can’t wait to go back and will definitely stay here again.
