This posting is for the private West-side 2,500 square unit that has 5 bedrooms, a large living room, dining room, kitchen, upper deck overlooking the Buffalo River, and lower level deck that peers out to the organic gardens and a private bathroom with laundry. This apartment is available for short-term or long-term rental.

Farm to Fork Retreat is a unique eco-retreat destination that practices holistic healing, sustainability, education and retreats. We are located in the drift-less area near Mondovi, WI directly on the beautiful Buffalo River. We offer 15 acres of wooded trails, 4 acres of organic gardens, kayaking, canoeing, 9-hole Frisbee Golf, sauna, classes & retreat stays.

We just renovated our horse barn for use for family reunions, weddings, events, or team building retreats. The barns houses a full service "Milk House Bar" where local beers such as "The Brewery Projekt" are on tap with a Lemon Basil Beer made from the basil of our farm. Also local wines from "Bemus Bluffs" and "Infinity Beverages" are available. We have a Wood-Fired Pizza oven in the barn as well for those desiring a pizza made with ingredients from our organic gardens.

Our 4 acres of organic gardens offer guests a farm to fork experience that focuses on seasonal eating. We grow and produce about 70% of what we eat, and the rest we purchase from our friends and neighbors. The retreat has 15 acres of wooded hiking and skiing trails that wind along a quarter mile of the very private Buffalo River. Great for kayaking, canoeing, and a dip in the river on a hot day or after a wood stove sauna session. We have kayaks and a canoe available for rent onsite. We have a 9-hole Frisbee Golf course onsite, along with horse shoes and other yard games. There is also nearby access to biking, horse riding, ATV, and snowmobile trails. We also have an off-the-grid Monolithic home powered on solar. Tours by request.

You will have free access to the properties gardens, wooded trails, 9-hole Frisbee Golf course, horseshoes, and other yard games. You may use produce from the garden, just ask us first before harvesting. We have 11 gardens that spread over 4 acres, and a guide through them is sometimes needed. We offer kayaks and a canoe available for rental for $30. There is also a wood stove sauna available for $20 per session. Just ask us to prepare it for you. Also, if you would like a campfire, there is $20 preparation and tending fee. We also have rustic camping opportunities coming soon.

We live in a Monolithic Dome home that is located on the property. We will be present on the property, but the retreat location is very private and away from our dwelling, so we can be interactive, or not, which ever is the guests desire. On the Bed & Breakfast side of the retreat center, we make breakfast every morning and have more interaction with the guests.

Buffalo County is a hidden treasure in Western Wisconsin. The Buffalo River, which runs alongside Dancing Yarrow Retreat, flows down to the Mississippi. It is peaceful and untouched, so the wildlife is bountiful. Home to eagles, sandhill cranes, geese, ducks, whitetail deer and many more creatures! The Buffalo River comes out in Alma, which is a wonderful tourist/artist town, and has amazing Mississippi Bluffs. There is an over look there, worth the drive.

The town of Mondovi has a beautiful lake called Mirror Lake. There is good fishing, and the greatest July 4th fireworks show you'll find in a small town. There are 3 restaurants, a grocery store, 2 hardware stores, a great thrift store, a library and other small town store needs.

Kinestone Permaculture University is a must see neighbor of ours located in Fountain City, WI in Buffalo County. They have a permaculture university and stone hedge circle.

We have close access to the Trempealeau County bike trail. It proudly boasts being the largest connected bicycle loop system covering 487 miles of paved back roads in the United States.

Eau Claire is located 20 minutes to the north of us and offers many activities from art fairs, free music in parks, dining and shopping.

Amtrak trains has a line that comes into Winona, MN, which is a half hour drive to the retreat center.

The Chippewa Valley Regional Airport is located in Eau Claire, WI, approximately 30 minutes from our location. Car rentals are available at the airport, or pick-up can be arranged.

We have ample parking available on our property.

Dancing Yarrow Retreat also offers wedding and honeymoon packages. We have a newly remodeled barn that seats 80-125 people. We offer seasonal gourmet cuisine and wood-fired pizzas. Make your wedding a retreat for your whole wedding party, from wedding to honeymoon!

We use natural, homeopathic healing practices, and offer health and nutritional consultations and evaluations. Asian facial, hand and body evaluations are used to determine what the bodies organs are saying.

People who come here find that it is a very healing and peaceful place for them to rediscover themselves. Nature has a way of touching the soul, bringing it sunshine when in need. The location, plus the combination of the highly mineralized organic food, adds to an experience that many have never had.

About Dennis & Melanie Anderson

We own and operate Farm to Fork Retreat. Dennis is a Homeopath, & Nutritionist. He offers education, consultations, and Asian facial/hand/body diagnosis. We have a passion for food, and living well. We work together to manage and operate the 4 acres of highly mineralized organic food, 15 acres of wooded trails, manage the retreat center and its' guests. We feel very blessed to be stewards of such a beautiful place, a hope it can bring healing, and joy to those that come here.

Dennis & Melanie Anderson purchased this chalet in 1992

Why Dennis & Melanie Anderson chose Mondovi

This property was the back 40 of Dennis' father's farm. As a young boy, Dennis wondered all over the hills of Mondovi, and fell in love with it's beauty and tranquility. He begged his father to sell it to him, and even though he was a wheeler and dealer, almost selling it to someone else, he finally sold it to Dennis who started preparing the land for it's future purpose. He started by planting apple, trees, blueberries, pears, mulberries, and more. Then worked the soil, and mineralized the land to produce amazing organic food. In 1992 he built the 4,000 square foot building, which is an energy efficient 'envelope' home. The building envelope – also known as the building shell, fabric or enclosure – is the boundary between the conditioned interior of a building and the outdoors. The kitchens, living rooms, & decks on each side are upstairs, capitalizing on the beautiful river views, of feels as if they are living within the woods. Great for birdwatching, we see Eagles, Sandhill cranes, woodpeckers and more. Dennis built the home for a retreat center to receive clients in need of nutritional, homeopathic, & alternative health care.

Melanie and Dennis have built an off the grid solar Monolithic dome home for themselves on the property. Each year, more trees are planted, each year, the beauty grows more...

What makes this chalet unique

There are not many properties that offer so much, wilderness, river and organic gardens. Plus we have an off the grid, solar powered, Monolithic Dome home that features permaculture practices for gardening.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dennis and Melanie are really great people. They went out of their way both mornings we were there to make homemade breakfasts for us almost entirely out of food from their land or their neighbors' livestock--some of the best meals I have ever had. Listing was accurate. The house is very rustic and quaint. There is a river running through the property so there are lots of mosquitoes. They have a black lab and two cats who are all very well-behaved.

The living room and kitchen area were big and we enjoyed that space. There were plenty of bedrooms, but the only complaint I heard was the twin beds downstairs were very uncomfortable. The only bathroom is downstairs, but it is very nice size. There were enough supplies in the kitchen to cook with. The river view was great and the property is nice. The location was great, far enough away to enjoy ourselves yet close enough to go shopping.

The photos/write up on the VRBO website were misleading and the 4.7 rating was misleading as well.

  • 1 of 5

As stated in the review title the photos/write up on the VBRO website were misleading see following back-up for the statement.

1. The five bedroom retreat was connected to two other units.

a. The five bedroom retreat had two floors 3 bedrooms and bathroom/laundry (combined) on the first level. Second level has kitchen, living room, sitting room (open to living room & kitchen) and two bedrooms.

b. The first and second levels had connecting doors into the other units that did not have locks that would make an occupant feel secure ( first level had a lock on the other side the door and the second level had no lock).

2. Decks were dirty and had chipped paint and the furniture was worn or dirty.

3. Insects were visible (dead and alive) in light fixtures, cupboards and closets .

4. Traveling companion found something crushed up under here pillow sham.

5. Cleaning supplies were stuck in the corner in a box next to the refrigerator.

6. Refrigerator vegetable drawer was cracked and broken.

7. The note on the wall by the kitchen sink asked us to sanitize the utensils, we realized that it was due to insect spray and mouse poison sprinkles ( lazy Susan cupboards). We feel that the home owner should probably santize and clean up not customers.

8. We realized it was harvest time but the gardens were unkept vegetables were laying on the ground rottening.

9. We ate at the restaurant and both of us had gastric problems after dinner.

10. The one rental unit that was attached to the 5 bedroom retreat had a long term renter that had a dog. That person was not there but one of the farm helpers was taking care of the dog that barked through out the night.

11. There was a strong incense smell downstairs all night long very off putting.

12. All in all the slapped together property was like a hippie commune.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a detailed report of your dislike for our property. You are the very first person to have come and written such a detailed review of your dislike. The sign for sanitation is required by law, so sorry, all dishes are washed, but the sign, just like "Employees must wash hands before returning to work." must be displayed. Pictures used for the property are all taken here. MANY people have said how much they thought the pictures did not do it justice. It is an AMAZING piece of property that brings revival to many, humans, dogs, and other beautiful animals who live in our woods and river. Sorry that you couldn't have experienced that. We try our hardest to do battle with inspects, spider webs, and any other items that need tending too. Yes, one deck was not painted this Spring. The top deck did not get painted, was always on our schedule to be done, but we were not able to schedule it in between other people No one else has complained about it, not even the Vice-President of Homeaway and his whole family who visited us this summer had your issues. You can read his family's great review below. If you had had such issues, it would have been nice to have know about them. Clearly you missed out of the beauty of your experience and focused on negativity instead.

Beautiful setting and interesting venue

  • 3 of 5

We loved that it was private and there were numerous gardens, and the river and what the venue had to offer. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were so bad, that we could not enjoy anything offered other than to visit the "Barn" area where the mosquitoes seemed to not be as abundant. This are was quite nice and we enjoyed our time there. We could not go down by the river, therefore, no swimming or canoing/kayaking, nor could we walk around the beautiful area. This certainly was not the fault the owners, as I am certain it is because of our very wet year, but be prepared to use a ton of bug spray, but it still did not seem to help, even though it had DEET in it.

The accommodations were ok. We liked the style of the accommodations we stayed in, rustic and casual and spacious, but the beds were not comfortable. My daughter's back went out while sleeping as a result of the poor bed and is currently getting care and on medication and has missed work this week because of it.

We had 10 people in our group, and there is only one bathroom.

The oven on the stove did not work, so our meals that we planned, using an oven, had to be cooked outdoors on the grill, causing much discomfort because of the mosquitoes. Because this is an eco friendly accommodation, be prepared that there is no microwave.

Some of the screening in the accommodation was defective, therefore we also had mosquitoes inside, making it uncomfortable and difficult to sleep. Our 4 & 5 year old granddaughters were covered with bits.

We loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

Dennis and Melanie bent over backwards to insure our stay was perfect in every way. We celebrated my mom's 90th birthday with her immediate family. Several of the 12 of us were on special diets. They accommodated us beautifully with pleasure and ease. The food was sensational -- everyone was fully nourished and satisfied. The edible organic gardens grew the food we ate each day - you can not find fresher or more tasty food anywhere we have been. The grounds are beautiful. The kayaking was superb. Dennis lit a fire in the fire pit - we were reminded of old camp days. The pride and love of the land and the area was evident.

The owners and workers were helpful and warm.

We can't say enough about how special the weekend was.

Interesting property

  • 4 of 5

Dennis and Melanie were so flexible and allowed us to rearrange our scheduled weekend because we had sick children in our group. We had a nice walk on the property in the woods (and some sled riding!) and we were all comfortable in the house. The owners also made arrangements to get a piece back to us that we had accidentally left at the house!
