About Matt Claussen

Matt is a retired park ranger and Amy is a journalist and writer who decided to combine their love of horses and the ocean by living on beautiful San Juan Island.

Matt Claussen purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Matt Claussen chose Friday Harbor

We searched for years to find just the right place where we could be near the breath-taking beauty of the ocean and the majesty of whales and also keep our beloved horses at home. Our farm has a perfect central location, and we are ten minutes away in either direction from the best that San Juan Island has to offer, including whale watching, beachcombing, kayaking, great restaurants and fun shops.

What makes this apartment unique

Our farm is a favorite of tourists, who often pull over on the road out front to take a photo! We especially love the red metal roofs that top every building--hence the name we gave it. While we are in the 'rain shadow' and therefore protected from getting the rain that Seattle is famous for, if it does have a brief shower here you will enjoy the rhythm of the rain on the roof. And minutes later, when the sun is back out, you can walk out onto the deck and spot a deer stepping out of the woods that are only steps from your door.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful farm. Our hosts were most welcoming, attentive, and accommodating. The apartment is spacious, well-outfitted, charming, and very comfortable. Every aspect was perfect from our perspective. We are looking forward to returning when we visit our daughter and her family again.

Friendly and fun small family farm!

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed staying at this San Juan Island property for a whale watching weekend in the fall. Friendly faces greeted us on our arrival and immediately made us feel welcome. The guest quarters were just as described and worked very well for our circumstances. Everything we could need was available. Our 6'4" son had no problem sleeping in the loft area! It was especially fun to meet the chickens and horses. Having fresh eggs for breakfast each morning was a nice bonus. We loved Friday Harbor during the daytime but were so glad to get into the countryside for evenings and mornings. It was also an easy drive to see some of the sights on both the north and south sides of the island. We highly recommend Red Roof Acres!

AWESOME & RELAXING/Matt & Amy VERY nice & helpful!!!

  • 5 of 5

4 of us stayed at Red Roof Acres for 2 nights and we all wished there was more availability to stay longer. What a nice and very well maintained place to stay. 3 of us grew up in Iowa, so being on a farm was very special to us. Having the horses, dogs, cats, and chickens around us, felt very much like home! Matt and Amy were very nice and very helpful! When we arrived, the apartment was clean and welcoming. There were BEAUTIFUL fresh flowers and Seattle Chocolates on the table. Matt brought us a dozen fresh eggs from their chickens. We had a GREAT and YUMMY breakfast which included the farm fresh eggs! I don't think any other place would do this for their guests. Matt and Amy rank a 10+ in our ratings. We would highly recommend this VRBO place for anyone who enjoys AND appreciates farm life, as well as the owners who take pride in providing a clean and well taken care of place to stay. We hope to be back again when we take some "relaxing time-away" from our busy Seattle life to visit Friday Harbor again. Thanks again, Matt and Amy, for making our stay on your farm a very memorable place to be! Kudos to your hard work and hospitality all around! All the best to you :)

Charming farm apartment

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Friday Harbor was made even better by our charming accommodations in this cute little above-barn apartment! The owners were gracious and accommodating - showing our kids around the farm, letting them pet the horses and gather eggs from the hen house for our breakfast and also sending us off with a bag of freshly picked plums! Very clean, well stocked. Highly recommend!

Don't hesitate to stay here! The property and the property owners are wonderful. We stayed with our two children and both Matt and Amy were so welcoming with the children - introducing them to the animals and engaging them to learn about the horses.

Private and peaceful, Red Roof Acres farm offers your own adorable barn loft apartment, capable of sleeping up to 6, complete with a full kitchen and bath and wood-burning fireplace and nestled amidst 23 beautiful acres of pastures and woods in the heart of San Juan Island. Pack a picnic lunch and head minutes down our road to a popular whale-watching site at Lime Kiln State Park, where you can spot an Orca or Minke whale, or stroll to an internationally-acclaimed lavender farm that's just around the corner. Have you always wanted to bring your horse on a vacation where you could ride on a beach? We offer overnight horse boarding and are just minutes away from hundreds of acres of trails and horse-friendly beaches. As a family owned and operated farm, we have a barn with an adjoining paddock, three separate pastures, a round pen and parking for your horse trailer or RV. For those who want a full water experience, you can take a whale-watching boat tour, rent kayaks and spot wildlife such as seals and bald eagles, or test your fishing skills on a chartered boat. It's also fun to rent mopeds or bicycles and get a more personal look at the island, which boasts lush woods, gorgeous shores and plenty of wildlife, including deer, raccoons and wild turkeys. Or take a ten-minute drive into town and enjoy some of the best restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. Be sure to get an ice cream cone from the little shop on the docks--they have wonderful flavors! Our farm is located at the center of all that San Juan Island has to offer, and yet is so private that you can't see any neighbors.
