About the property

Think wilderness camping meets bohemian boudoir.

Our price includes accommodation for up to 6 people on a private island, and includes meals.

Out There is for independent, tread-lightly travellers looking for alternative, off grid accommodation on a private island in the heart of the Sunshine Coast. The concept is digital detox. Move away from the phone, immerse yourself in the wilderness.

Out There is a private island eco-retreat designed to take advantage of BC's temperate rainforest climate, by harvesting rainwater, solar and wind power to create an off-grid oasis that leaves minimal impact on the surroundings. All wash room facilities incorporate composting toilets. We're focused on sustainable and traditional building practices, and reduced energy and water use. We hope this provides an interesting and educational back-drop for your wilderness adventure.

Accommodations include a private two person tent cabin with en-suite, 1 king bedroom with private en-suite and 1 queen bedroom in our wood framed Yurt. All rooms have access to shared kitchen, living and outdoor spaces. Accommodation is for up to six people sharing and includes meals. Each room has its own unique ocean views, private outdoor space and includes comfortable king or queen bed, organic bedding, towels and locally made soaps. The waterfront tent cabin includes a private 'en-tent' wash-room with composting toilet, rainwater collection, out-door solar shower, and incredible views.

There is always someone on site to deal with maintenance, answer any questions and help organise any local tours.

Due to limited storage and refrigeration facilities and to minimize waste, food is included and provided. DIY breakfast and lunch are available from the well stocked pantry and the seasonal garden. Healthy and nutritious family style meals are provided in the evenings.

Out There is a 23 acre property on Nelson Island, incorporating a private island, which connects to Nelson Island at low tide. The views overlook the crossroads of four waterways, Jervis Inlet, Agamemnon Channel, Hotham Sound and Sechelt Inlet. This unique location is a Mecca for marine and outdoor recreational activities including boating, fishing, kayaking, diving, snorkelling and swimming, endless amounts of hiking and shoreline to explore.

For the more adventurous, we can help arrange local boat tours of the surrounding area, including Friel Falls, the majestic and unforgettable Jervis Inlet and the rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows in Sechelt Inlet. Known locally as the 'Chuck', the rapids provide a powerful show of turbulent waves, spectacular whirlpools for thrill seeking extreme kayakers from around the world. We can also help to arrange diving sessions. Please give at least a weeks notice for boat tours and /or diving.

Or, pick up a fishing licence and you don't have to venture any further than the island's beach to catch your daily limit of oysters and clams, or go swimming and snorkelling in the warm shallow waters of the protected bay.

We have beach chairs, shaded hammocks, solar powered dingy boat and a double person kayak ($40 per day for two people), snorkelling equipment, a selection of board games, book library / exchange, designated fire pits.

Out There is surrounded by spectacular marine and wildlife landscapes. Seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and chip monks are regular visitors and the kelp beds are teaming with sea-life. Depending on the season you may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse migrating orca and dolphin pods.

If you are staying longer than a couple of days and are comfortable on the water, we highly recommend hiring kayaks to explore local coves and beaches up close.

Out There is located on Nelson Island, a 20 minute boat ride from the Government Dock in Egmont. We provide boat service to and from Out There on our classic west coast trawler, or can arrange local kayak rentals or water taxis.

There are great transport links from Vancouver Airport and Vancouver, to all the towns on the Sunshine Coast through Malaspina Coach lines and BC Ferries. If arriving by coach, we pick up from Earls Cove Ferry Terminal.

If arriving by car, we pick up at the Government Dock in Egmont which is approx. 90 min drive from Langdale Ferry Terminal. Overnight parking is available through Bathgates Store ($5 per night) or free at the Egmont Community Hall.

Please note that BC Ferries to the Sunshine Coast are extremely busy at the weekends, and it is not uncommon to experience delays and sailing waits. The ferries run every two hours. You will need to catch the 3.50 ferry at the latest for us to be able to pick you up by boat at approx 6.30pm. Pick ups after 6.30pm would be by local water taxi, additional fees apply, or overnight accommodation is available in Egmont at Bathgates Store, the Backeddy Marina or the Westcoast Wilderness Lodge.

There may also be other guests arriving and departing on the same day, we try to coordinate boat pick up in Egmont, to minimize boat trips.

Tonino Air and Harbour Air also offer scheduled flights to Sechelt from Vancouver, YVR and Nanaimo and Tofino Air can provide chartered flights from Sechelt right to our dock.

About Liz and Andy

Andy and Liz moved to BC from the UK in 2003, got married on Tofino's Long Beach and lived in Vancouver's float home community before moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2008. We were lucky enough to purchase a beautiful piece of the Sunshine Coast, Out-There on Nelson Island, with a dream of building, living off-grid and creating an eco-retreat that could challenge and inspire other travellers. We currently live 'Out-There' on our little wooden boat, with Nina, our dog.

Liz and Andy purchased this lodge in 2004

Why Liz and Andy chose Egmont

Inspired by the incredible beauty of our surroundings and small living spaces, along with the help and encouragement of family, friends and our amazing volunteers, we've spent the last two years turning our dream into reality. Out-There is dedicated to providing eco-friendly accommodations that minimize their impact on the environment, whilst providing the opportunity for travellers to experience the natural beauty and wilderness of the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. Our values are focused on conservation and being kind to the environment through the provision of a sustainable, off-grid infrastructure that will enhance visitors’ experience of the natural beauty of the area and create interactive and inspirational experiences.

Fabulous location! Great hosts! Great food! (We bought a license so we could harvest oysters - a great move!) Relaxing beyond measure! A real escape!

Because of the steep path used to get from the boat dock up to the cabin, this location would not be good for older people or anyone with limited agility.

Beautiful, Inspiring, Relaxing...

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a 3-night stay in the tent/cabin. It was amazing! Definitely the most relaxing vacation we've ever been on. Liz and Andy were so welcoming and inspiring as they live completely off-grid and still have all the amenities. Hot showers, comfortable bed, delicious food, and beautiful views – the list goes on! It is the perfect mix of luxury and outdoorsy. We played in the water, walked down the beach, sat by the fire, read on the balcony, and watched seals swim by! Liz and Andy even helped us teach our dog how to swim! We would highly recommend Out There to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation. Can’t wait to return!

Exactly what we needed!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic 9 night stay in the yurt, one of the BEST vacations we have ever had!! Right away Liz and Andy made us feel right at home, and by the end of our stay it was hard to say goodbye to our new friends!! We had a very relaxing vacation, from the beautiful scenery, remote and peaceful location to the very comfortable king size bed, the good company and delicious food!! Andy and Liz cooked up some fabulous meals over the course of our stay including clam chowder with freshly dug clams!

It was really cool learning about the process of building the yurt, harnessing solar and wind power, and rainwater collection. We even got to help erect the wind turbine!!

We brought our dog Molly, who loved jumping off the dock and swimming with Nina (Liz and Andy's sweet little 12 year old rescue puppy). We also brought our canoe which allowed us to explore the area. We hiked to the skookumchuck rapids, checked out Ruby Lake for some fresh water swimming, paddled around Nelson island and saw lots of seals and did some fishing!

We would highly recommend Out There to any outdoor enthusiast or couples looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway. Can't wait to go back...soon! Or perhaps create our own piece of paradise one day, you guys have really inspired us....Thank you both so much. xo

Owner's Response: So glad you guys had a good time, it was really great to meet the three of you, and Molly's dock jumping skills really will never get old. It was great to finally get around to some fishing, and clam digging, which I'm sure we'll get better at, and hopefully we'll have a few more 'fresh as it gets' items on the menu! Thanks again guys, come back soon!
