If you're looking for an authentic Rocky Mountain experience, to bring your friends and family together and have memorable, meaningful interaction, in a historic ranch with privacy, world class skiing close by and dry fly fishing at your doorstep, abundant wildlife, and all the comforts of home or spa, you've found it. Built in 1906, Elk River Lodge is custom furnished with 10 luxurious beds, a magazine quality kitchen, hot tub, New outdoor cedar barrel Sauna!, outdoor grill, and views from every room. The hayloft in the barn is the ultimate place to listen to music and play games. It even has a 17 foot wide projector screen to watch your favorite movies with surround sound! Ideal for family gatherings, world class skiing and dry fly fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, snow mobiling, bike riding, golfing, even bob sledding...the lodge feels as though its in a national park that's all yours! Herds of elk and deer graze across the meadows each day. The property is bordered by the Elk River offering miles of world class dry fly fishing in total privacy and a beautiful spring creek flows next to the lodge. Many other streams full of trout are close by.
We run an authentic working ranch that boards horses and are ideally set up for Bed and Bale as well! Bring your fly rods or skis, camera, hiking boots and even your horses!
There's a large wood stove in the great room with plenty of cut firewood at your disposal, a foosball table and antique style record player with a nice collection of old vinyls, a hidden TV with a collection of movies, and a fire pit outside for roasting marshmallows while listening to the elk bugle.
The lodge is ideally located to take day trips to the surrounding national parks including Banff, Waterton and Glacier, as well as the provincial parks including Elk Lakes and Height of the Rockies.
We can arrange Grizzly bear viewing and horseback flyfishing trips to alpine lakes and pristine tributaries that seldom get fished, in valleys with no roads...along with mountain lion, wolf and linx hunting for the more adventurous...
We manage the property as a sanctuary for wildlife which creates the ideal setting to restore the soul and the lodge is ideal to comfort the body.
Elk River Lodge provides the ultimate way to experience the splendor of the Canadian Rockies, the way Montana used to be 100 years ago, only better.

Don't miss this experience!
First things first: Jason is the consummate VRBO host! We visited immediately following the summer wildfires which didn't affect the local Sparwood area greatly, but we had to cancel two other of our rentals for this trip that were further west due to evacuations in those areas. Jason is knowledgable and was more than willing to take the time to discuss and recommend new areas and specific rentals he would consider. We were relieved to have his advice. His suggestions were outstanding... As to our stay at his ranch...WOW!...delightful in so many ways. The picture window in the kitchen area is superb. We watched for and saw elk frequently. All the other amenities are great...read other reviews for detail. This trip to Western Canada was in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary. I wanted it to be our best vacation ever...and it was! Jason's ranch was the last stop on our 5-stop trip and provided the perfect setting and ending. Thank you so very much, Jason, for providing us with the wonderful experience and all the time you spent we me in the planning stage. You are an extraordinary host!

Canadian Rockies Getaway
This is a little slice of heaven situated along the Elk River with with 360 degree views of the majestic Canadian Rockies. House is perfect for families and the barn has a movie theater. The hot tub and sauna are added bonuses with amazing views. Little creek near the house was fun for the kids to float around in and everyone enjoyed fishing for trout in the Elk River. The horses on property were sweet and friendly. You can spend days exploring the massive property. Herds of elk came through in the morning and evening. You can spend hours just admiring the nature, wildlife and relaxing to the sounds of the babbling brook. Our family loved it here and plan to make this a regular visit. The lovely town of Fernie is only 30 min away where there are restaurants, shops and all outdoor guided activities. We went white water rafting and horseback riding. Sparwood is only 10 min away where there is a grocery store for any needs. Great for Relaxing and family bonding!

Week of peace and solitude
Our family came up to reconnect with the surrounding beauty and solitude of what we thought this setting could offer us. We were not disappointed in the least amount and wish our stay could have lasted much much longer. It was more peaceful and beautiful than what we could have imagined. Thank you for letting us experience this wonderful setting and wonderful property with our family. We also appreciated the recommendations on the surrounding activities and guide services you suggested. They were all wonderful people and a wonderful time.

Best Vacation Rental EVER!!
We love to travel and have stayed in hundreds of vacation rentals. Hands down the best rental we have ever stayed in. Everything was perfect. Super comfy beds, very well equipped kitchen, movie night every night in the barn, fishing on the river and our favorite watching elk from the hot tube. Seriously, this is the place you want to stay. We are a family of 10 ages 9-45. Kids loved it. Thank you cant wait to return.

Excellent location and property!
Our three-generation family group of eight enjoyed six days at this incredible Sparwood ranch. We spent months preparing and planning for this trip. Pictures don't capture the beauty of the property! It was well stocked and maintained. While the ranch feels remote and private, it was only fifteen minutes to get groceries and gas for cars. All of the furnishings and finishes exceeded expectations! It was clear that the host put a lot of thought into all of the property details with the guests in mind. If you plan to go to Lake Louise, consider the new Park and Ride shuttle. We went to this area before arriving at the ranch, but it can also be a day trip from Sparwood. We avoided driving after dark due to wildlife crossing the roads, so keep that in mind. We saw elk and deer at the ranch and bears at the national parks. The horses at the ranch are very friendly. We fed them carrots over the fence. Great family pics! And, a few games of corn hole are always fun with a group. Our stay was in late June and the weather was perfect. The grill was 'top of the line' (and lighted). We enjoyed using it several times. Be sure to walk over to the river, too. Just beautiful! We highly recommend this property and host. Our family vacation could not have been more perfect!

Magical place. The perfect combination of comfort and nature. Party of 10; plenty of room; great amenities. Convenient town/shopping/activities.. We hiked, golfed, rafted, trail ride, fly fished. Local people were very friendly. We have done 4 of these reunions; this one was hands down the best. Owner was interested in us and our experience; extremely helpful from the beginning.. If you only have one trip left this is the place you have to go. Nothing short of a bucket list trip. Thanks Jason, we will never forget your Elk River Lodge.

A lovely retreat for our entire family.
The 6 bedroom house is a wonderful mix of rustic charm and luxurious touches. It is well equipped for a large group. We used every bed available! I am a stickler for detail and I must mention the excellent quality of the sheets and towels. This really makes a difference. The hot tub was a hit with the children as well as the barn loft where they could watch movies during meal preparation. There are two horses in the barn and the children loved offering them carrots every morning. The proximity to the river was ever mindful with the background sounds of the water flowing over the rocks. The evenings cooled down, allowing us to open the windows and fall asleep to the river's tranquility. The location, while remote, offered us a welcome reprieve to our normally chaotic lives. An hour and a half drive takes you to the Canadian side of Glacier National Park (Waterton Lakes National Park) where you can picnic among the majestic red rock mountains and dip your feet in the clear streams. A day at Graves Lake was also a highlight and only about a 25 min drive from the house. All in all, the house and location offered us a true vacation experience. You won't be disappointed!

This is a ten-star property!
For the past 18 years, we have met my sister and BIL every summer to fly fish a “bucket-list” river/area. We’ve rented some lovely properties. Elk River Lodge is the total outstanding package. The setting, the house, barn, yards, deck, hot tub, sauna, horses, wildlife all added to the exceptional quality of our stay. The custom, hand-etched furniture and cabinetry, super-comfortable beds, gorgeous linens, and fluffy towels are further evidence that the owners appreciate their guests and care deeply about their experience. The house and grounds are immaculate. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need. It’s a fabulous house with obvious careful and thorough consideration of space…lots of space! The deck overlooking the creek packed with friendly brook trout was a favorite spot. Pretty, feisty brookies. For us, the house was lagniappe; the property’s close access to the Elk River was our main attraction. The dry fly fishing was unbelievable- gorgeous cutthroat trout. Great wading, easy access, and we only saw two drift boats zip by the entire stay. We did fish other spots Jason told us about but came back for the outstanding late afternoon fishing on the property. Charming little Fernie had good restaurants, Sparwood had great pizza and the grocery store had everything we needed. Jason is the consummate host. He patiently answered my zillion fishing questions and generously shared his local knowledge. We caught magnificent fish because of Jason. We have already sent the ranch’s link to several fly fishing pals who will book next summer. That’s the highest praise I can give a property…my passionate recommendation. We are incredibly grateful that Jason shared his ranch with us. It is a very special place. Book it right now!

What a unique and stunning spot
My family of 10 came to stay at this beautiful property, we were ages 6 to 78 and for that reason in particular it was a great place to be. Everyone could find things to do on the property, from going down to the river to fish to riding bikes, visiting with the horses, watching for elk, sitting in the hot tub, watching movies in the barn, cooking big meals. The house was super comfortable for the group of us. We did a lot of day adventures from there and enjoyed the proximity to beautiful mountains all around. We mostly cooked at the house as it’s a bit of a drive to get to any restaurants. Jason was extremely great. Communication was super easy, he and his wife are very kind and helpful. We would definitely recommend staying here!

Winter Wonderland
Staying at Elk River Lodge was the highlight of our Christmas vacation. My husband and I wanted a place where our family had space for solitude and areas to gather as a multi-generational group. The weather was icy cold but the hot tub was our refuge. The wood burning stove created a cozy and relaxing atmosphere to play cards and games. We gathered at table as a family and left wishing we had been able to stay longer. I would love to visit in the summer as well and check out the fishing hole! I would absolutely recommend this property (and already have) to families and groups who are looking for an oasis to enjoy nature and create memories together.

Thanksgiving weekend 2021
IF you want to get away from it all and experience the quiet country life this is such a great place to do that. It is so cozy with a big fireplace in the family room. Large dining area and equipped kitchen. There isn't a bad view from any window in the place. They all have a different view of local mountains, rivers, pastures with grazing horses and it is common to see elk and deer moving through. Families can gather with ample bedroom space and three newly renovated bathrooms to accommodate the needs of all. Relax on the porch in the hot tub or sauna all while being one with nature. One neat feature in the warmer months that we just squeaked in in October was the great barn with its large theatre style screen and speaker system for family viewing and fun! The outdoor fire pit is another gathering place and some nice paths down to the river provide nice exercise and outdoor fishing sport. All needs were met and exceeded our expectations for family gathering connections. Thanks Jason for opening up your home for others to enjoy!

Amazing Experience!
First, I'm not a writer of online reviews. This might be my second one - ever. But we had such an incredible experience at the Elk River Lodge that I felt compelled to comment on what a special property this is. The setting is like something out of a movie (The Revanant maybe?), and there is so much to do in the area that you could easily enjoy a week and still not have enough time to do and see everything. It's close enough to Fernie to be able to access restaurants, etc., but just far enough so you feel like you're really away from it all. The ranch itself feels like your own private national park. We saw a herd of elk on the property that numbered in the hundreds, many deer, bald eagles, ospreys, ducks, hawks and much more. If you like to fish, you'll be in heaven. The property is right on the Elk River, which was teeming with cutthroat trout, and there is great fishing right on the property. My kids (9 and 12) had huge smiles on their faces (almost as big as mine) when they caught their first fish on a fly rod. The accommodations - which include the main house and a very cool barn - are nice and comfortable while still feeling like an authentic Rocky Mountain lodge. Kitchen is great and fully stocked we could have imagined needing. We cooked in almost every night for a group of 10. Kids loved the foosball table, and the barn has an amazing full-size movie screen and projector, which we all enjoyed a lot. Finally, the owners, Jason and Lena, and their caretakers Don and Sue were really great. Jason, in particular, was very accessible and generous with his time - including multiple phone calls and emails - to fill me in on all the activities in the area. He was also super helpful in helping us recover a couple of items we left behind, going above and beyond the call. Overall, we could not have asked for better hosts. Thank you Jason, Lena, Don and Sue for your hospitality. This place is a rare gem in a world that is becoming increasingly crowded and developed. My advice: skip Banff (which is like Disneyland in the summer) and go to the Elk River Lodge instead. Our family all agreed it was one of the best trips we've ever taken together.

Fabulous Retreat and Vacation Place!
Our group of 8 enjoyed excellent biking, hiking, fishing, and general relaxation opportunities. The facilities of the ranch house were excellent in terms of spaciousness, cleanliness, art, kitchen facilities, and views of the mountains (on both sides!!). Easy access to the Elk River and lots of wildlife crossing the expansive fields one views from the house and the decks. The living room area was a great place to relax and tell group stories (could be some fishing lies...!) The dining area handled our whole group at once with ease for group dining. The modern washer and dryer were greatly appreciated!! The hot tub was very clean and spotless with easy controls and great views! The craftsman detail of the woodworking and art were superb and really added to our enjoyment of just being in the ranch house. The property manager was readily available and a joy to converse with about the area. Overall our experience was wonderful and far exceeded our expectations.

Authentic Lodge Vacation
Our family of twelve (4 families) recently spent a fantastic week of fun and relaxation at this great retreat in the Canadian Rockies. The lodge has an authentic rustic decor to fit the surrounding mountain setting but with lots of modern updates. The furnishing and cabinets are beautifully hand crafted with beautiful wildlife drawings on the front. It has everything you need. Plenty of space to hang out and a huge dining table. We made use of the hot tub and sauna. Eating s’mores at the outdoor fire pit was a big hit with the kids especially at sunset. The sunrise and sunsets over the mountain are breathtaking. There is also the barn with a huge theatre sized tv screen. Everywhere you look you can see the pride in all the details to make this the perfect mountain retreat. Being from Massachusetts this lodge filled all our wants and wishes with sighting of some wildlife. Lots of places to explore on the property with the Elk River running at the back of the lodge and things to do close by. It was hard to leave. Thanks also to Bill for all his help and recommendations. A five star + experience 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Thank you Jason for sharing this beautiful place.

I read an article about the Canadian Rockies in National Geographic nearly 40 years ago and began a quest to one day have a ranch in the most beautiful place in North America. Now it's a dream come true for friends from all over the world. When not being rented it's frequently used to raise money at auction for charities to help people in need and conservation organizations. I'm an avid fly fisherman and conservationist who believes in protecting wild and beautiful places such as the Elk River Valley in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Why they chose this property

The fishing, abundance and diversity of wildlife, scenery and setting on a historic ranch in the heart of the Canadian Rockies creates memories that last a lifetime. The dry fly fishing for wild cutthroat trout is world class and truly rare. The herds of elk that graze across the meadows is something most would only expect to see inside a national park, with crowds of people watching, but here we have it all to ourselves. The historic ranch provides a feeling of going back to a simpler place and time, clears the mind from distractions and stress of modern life and brings families and friends closer together.

What makes this property unique

Elk River Lodge is the only place to stay directly on the Elk River offering privacy and countless miles of fishing, hiking, riding, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing…Other accommodations are either not on the Elk River or they're in crowded areas that feel as though they could be in any city or ski resort.
