About the property

Main House (6 Bedrooms 4 Bath Sleeps 16) + Guest Cabin (1 Bed 1 Bath Sleeps 2)

The Great Escape is a spectacular, newly renovated mountain property that was built for privacy, relaxation and the enjoyment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The spacious three level cabin with 6 bedrooms and two master bedrooms is located at 3,900 feet at the center/top of a private mountain spanning 106 acres which boasts spectacular westward views of meadows, mountains, and valleys. There is a guest cabin 100 yards from the main house that can be rented for $75-$95 per night. The guest cabin includes the 7th bedroom and 5th bathroom

30 minutes north of Boone. Last half mile uphill on a private gravel driveway. Four wheel drive required in winter. We have had guests bring trailers with bikes/motorcycles up the driveway without any issues, however less experienced motor cycle riders might not be comfortable with the gravel/pitch of drive.

Key Amenities:

Main House: Six bedrooms/four baths in main house. This includes two master bedrooms. The primary master has a fireplace and a private deck with view.

There are two upstairs bedrooms with queens that share a bathroom.

In addition there are two "kids" rooms on the lower level that share a bathroom. These bedrooms have two bunk beds in each, however there is a full size bottom bunk in each room if you need more room for adults.

Guest Cabin: 1 bedroom, w bath, kitchenette and sitting room (rents for an additional $75-$95 per night). The guest cabin is approximately 100 yards from the main house. Great for grandparents, adult children who appreciate a little quiet. We never rent the guest separately, so you will have complete privacy if you don't end up renting the guest cabin also.

You could spend days just exploring this wonderful property, picnicing in the meadows full of wildflowers such as Queen Anne's Lace and daisies, and enjoying the deer and other wildlife. The main house and guest cabin are in the center of the property - 0.4 miles up a private drive. Very quiet, not a single man-made sound can be heard.

After a day of exploring, you'll love soaking in the hot tub as you marvel at the beautiful sunsets beyond the distant mountains. New 20 x 26 stone patio with fire pit and tremendous views. Complimentary firewood is provided.

The main level boasts a spacious living room with a 20-foot high cathedral ceiling, a wall of windows with picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and nearby and distant mountains, satellite HDTV with DVD Player, and a wood stove.

The dining area is adjacent to the living room with the same great mountaintop views, and the fully-equipped kitchen opens to the dining area. Granite counter tops and new stainless appliances. The views from the kitchen are also incredible. Off of the kitchen are a laundry room and a spacious mudroom.

Also on the main level is a spacious master suite with a king bed, doors leading to the deck and hot tub, satellite TV, and a newly tiled private bathroom with shower.

The main level wraparound deck is accessible from both the master bedroom and the dining/living area. On the deck are a gas grill, plenty of deck chairs and hammock for relaxing and admiring the gorgeous meadow, valley and mountain views. The sunsets are particularly wonderful. An octagonal dining table with seating is also located under a covered portion of the deck.

The upper level contains 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and private, newly tiled full bathroom with a tub/shower combo.

Downstairs is a living area with flat screen satellite TV and DVD Player, a high end foosball table (with telescoping, safety rods, very safe for little kids), a full-sized sleeper sofa, a wall of book shelves with plenty of books to enjoy, a desk, and a bathroom with a shower.

At the end of the driveway is a newly cleared grass ball field - 60' x 130'. Great for frisbee, soccer or softball.

In addition to the beautiful accommodations and spectacular mountain views that come with the 106 acres at The Great Escape, you can also have the pleasure of renting and staying at the cozy Guest Cabin nestled in the woods situated next to a peaceful goldfish pond. The cabin is rented for an additional $60 - $85 per night, depending on the season, and never rented separately from the main house.

Sit on the covered front porch of the cabin in either of 2 rocking chairs or the porch swing and listen to the water trickling through the goldfish pond and the birds chirping or the rustling of leaves as the mountain breezes meander through the forest. In the evening, enjoy a bonfire in the firepit by the pond, and during the day you can enjoy a meal in the great outdoors by the firepit.

Inside this cozy cabin are a kitchen equipped with all standard appliances except a dishwasher, a dining table for 2, a living room with a TV and DVD Player, a bathroom with a shower, and upstairs is a bedroom with queen-sized bed.

The Great Escape is located off of Hwy 421 just 20 miles northwest of Boone, so it is just a short drive to many local attractions. On the property are some great old logging roads to hike on as well as beautiful open mountaintop meadows full of wildflowers to roam through. The country roads are scenic and offer a great ride for bikers. Elk Knob State Park and Screamtime Zipline are only 15 minutes away. Dutch Creek Trails horseback riding, the historic Mast General Store, and the Historic Todd General Store are only 25 minutes away. Boone Shopping and Dining and ASU are only 35 minutes away. Tweetsie Railroad and Appalachian Ski Resort, Main Street Blowing Rock Shopping and Dining, The Virginia Creeper Trail, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline, and Grandfather Mountain are only 40-45 minutes away. And Ski Beech is just an hour away.

Whether you plan on staying on the move and visiting the popular local attractions or you plan to slow down and just relax at the property, you will certainly be glad to come home to the beauty and tranquility of The Great Escape!

Recommend four wheel drive or all wheel drive in the winter. Last half mile is uphill a private gravel driveway.

About Gordie

We're a family of six with four kids who love the Great Escape - ages 10, 7, 4 and 1. We've always enjoyed the outdoors and the mountains. We rented the property in early 2014 and after a great weekend, decided to try to purchase it.

We have renovated the main house and are adding three bedrooms and substantial living space in the spring of 2017. the renovation will be completed this May. We would be happy to provide more details over the phone regarding the amenities we are adding.

As former military members, my wife and i are happy to offer an 5% discount to Active Duty Military personnel. We also offer returning guests an 5% discount off of list price.

Gordie purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Gordie chose Blue Ridge Mountains

Spectacular views and chance to escape the city. It's very private and quiet with no other houses in sight. We wanted to have a place where our tfour children could tramp around and explore while we could relax with extraordinary views.

What makes this cabin unique

Very, very quiet, and very very private. Our recent upgrades have transformed a great piece of mountain property into a premium mountain escape.

The home was outstanding. The only thing missing was the instructions for the heaters but we figured it out. Would definitely stay there again. Privacy, great views, and always prompt responses from the owner. 5 Stars!

Amazing Family Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved spending a long weekend at this mountain home with our family and friends. Our children were so sad to leave. Gordie was very helpful through the entire process of renting, and any questions my husband had were readily answered. It was everything that we imagined it would be and more. We can't wait to come back again!! Thanks again for allowing us to rent your beautiful home!

Wonderfully great escape!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights while setting-up, hosting, and tearing-down our oldest child's wedding at a nearby venue. Unfortunately we didn't get to use the hot tub, play games downstairs, or even do any hiking...BUT...the house (and guesthouse) were a fantastic place to relax at the end of a long day and even better to sip a cup of coffee and watch the sun burn off the morning fog in the valley below. The house is clean and updated. Everything worked well, just an extremely satisfying experience. As clearly described, the location is remote, but we think this adds to the charm. The owner, Gordie, was prompt and courteous in his e-mail replies and he supplied plenty of information and contact numbers to address any potential issue that could have arisen. The next time we're looking for a place in the Boone area, we will certainly check to see if Great Escape is available.

Tranquil Mountain Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is a great property with many amenities that fit the Mountain vacation theme. After hiking the property or surrounding area you can relax in the hot tub or by the fire pit. There is a pond, ball field, lacrosse goals and fort for kids and kids at heart. Views are incredible and good fishing near by.
