Overview

About the property

Classic Waterfront Home, Private Beach, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps up to 6)

This is a wonderful place to get away from the hectic world! A Magnificent View, a Private Beach, a nice yard, eagles, and marine wildlife. Bring your binoculars!

Our comfortable waterfront Orcas home is located at the end of a private road on 7 acres, on the east side of the island, roughly midpoint between Point Lawrence and Doe Bay.

San Juan County Vacation Rental Permit: 00PROV18

The property commands a magnificent, sweeping view of Rosario Strait, Cypress, Sinclair and Blakely Islands, the Peapod Rocks, and the Cascade Mountains. It's a wonderful big sky and big water view that captivates. Please see my website for pictures.

We offer you a very private, peaceful spot to spend time with friends and family. The sounds are seagulls, changing tides, and the wind in the trees. And, from the house, yard, and your own private beach, you can enjoy passing boats and marine life. Sea lions, otters, orca whales, deer, bald eagles, and seabirds of all kinds abound.

In warm weather a picnic table, lawn chairs and barbeque are put out. Because of a southerly exposure, the yard is a great place for soaking up the sun and dining outdoors.

In the winter months, a cozy fire and a good book will provide welcome relaxation while you watch the changing maritime scenery.

Guests who visit our house take away fond memories...like a full moon rising over the Cascades, a bald eagle landing right out front in our largest tree, a salmon doing a tail dance across the water...or the ultimate: a pod of whales on parade 75 yards offshore. And, no one forgets our view and the peacefulness.

We have been renting the house for happy vacations for thirty years. Over the years, many couples and families have returned to enjoy this wonderful place.

About Melinda McGee

I grew up in the South and was blown away by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Melinda McGee purchased this house in 1986

Why Melinda McGee chose Doe Bay

I fell in love with this place the first moment I walked into the yard. It has an amazingly open captivating view of the water and a private beach in a very private location. The house is very sweet and comfortable. I bought this property with the intention to eventually retire there. I am now living in California and will eventually sell this property to another family to enjoy. Please let me know if you would like to move to Orcas Island.

What makes this house unique

For the past thirty years many families and couples have had relaxing and wonderful times here watching the wildlife, especially the bald eagles. Getting away from the hectic, technology driven lives and refreshing and rebooting in nature.

Perfect immersion in nature, very private and quiet

  • 5 of 5

From the deck and picture windows of the house, you will see porpoises and seals and a view of the water and surrounding islands that is always breathtaking. There is a bald eagle's nest that you can see from house, and the eagles are often seen in the trees in the yard or flying by. The little Pea Pod Islands just in front of the house are full of seals, which often swim right near the house and slap the water. The remote, quiet location of the house is why we chose it, and it did not disappoint. The house itself was comfortable and had everything we needed to cook delicious meals - especially from Buck's Bay Farm just down the road. Moran State Park is full of amazing hiking trails and old growth forests, and Shearwater Kayaking runs a great kayak tour from Doe Bay that explores the waters and islands just in front of the house. This house is great if you are looking for a remote location from which you can immerse yourself in the beauty of amazing Orcas Island.

Great View and large rooms

  • 4 of 5

We saw all kinds of wildlife and loved staying on the island. There was so much to do or not do.

The rooms in the house were very large and the kitchen had everything we needed for making meals. We had a great stay.

Taking the garbage to dump on the way out called for a little creativity and the house is at the far end of the island. But those things did not detour us from a great vacation.

Lovely location, modest home

  • 3 of 5

Pros:

-Incredible view of the water and surrounding islands

-Beach access (although tricky)

-House stayed cool inside

-Absolutely quiet (except for neighbor's dog who stood and barked at us whenever we would get in our car)

-Resident eagle nearby

-Felt very private and secluded

Cons:

-If you are 5'11" or over, you will not be able to stand upright in either shower.

-To get to the beach is tricky, (overgrowth needs to be cut back) and the beach is only reachable when the tide is out.

-After traveling all day, we wanted to rest. When we pulled back the coverlet on our bed, the bed was bare. We had to rummage around to find clean sheets and then make the bed ourselves.

-We knew before we came that there is no garbage pick up, and we would have to pack it all out, but it is a hassle.

-The "To Do" list for cleanup is REALLY long. It states that a cleaning crew will come in for 2 hours once you leave, but if they have to stay longer you will be charged. So the list states you should take care of it. It rivals any spring cleaning checklist. As someone who was looking to get AWAY from household chores and just relax, it was added stress. Besides, the house certainly wasn't spotless when we arrived—front windows were so smeary they impacted the view, shower drain was clogged with hair, there was a centipede in our son's bed. We were washing towels, wiping down surfaces, sweeping, vacuuming, piling smelly garbage/recycle into our car.....the exact opposite of what we should be doing while on vacation. Would have much preferred to spend that time at the beach.

-I would suggest not requiring people to do any cleaning, and offer garbage pickup, even if if means increasing the price. We've stayed in many VRBO homes, and never had to do major housework. Because of all of that, we won't be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at my house. I'm sorry that there was a misunderstanding about cleaning and garbage. In the email I sent to you it states: I am attaching the cleanup checklist so that you have an idea of everything that needs to be done to get the house ready for the next renters. It is up to you to do as much or as little as you like. The checklist is for the housecleaner to make sure everything is ready for the next renters. You can just walk out and lock the door and the cleaning time will be deducted from your deposit. It is inconvenient that the garbage truck doesn't fit down our lane. We do offer an option of garbage removal, sent to you in the same email: Please let me know if you need to have the housecleaner take away your garbage for an extra charge. Like many/most of the beaches on the island, my beach is covered in high tide. You can always go down to the water at the base of the stairs. I hope that you had a wonderful time on the island. Cheers, Melinda

Beautiful, isolated, yet close

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed at this property for three nights and had a wonderful time. The house was spacious and clean and the views from the yard were lovely. The kitchen was well appointed. We went hiking in the day at the nearby state park and in the evenings we came "home," made dinner, and relaxed. The location was remote, which we loved. We saw lots of birds and animals, but no people at all. Yet we were 30 minutes from a grocery store and 15 minutes from hiking. For us, it was perfect. It's a beautiful island for a getaway and a beautiful property in which to get away.

Awesome view. A perfect, private retreat.

  • 5 of 5

Melinda McGee's lovely house is situated on a beautiful private grassy area above Rosario Strait. We saw dolphins swimming by, and many birds. There was a beautiful double rainbow one afternoon after a rain shower. We loved walking down the stairs to the beach, cooking in the large kitchen, and relaxing in the cozy living room. It was just a short drive to Olga, Moran State Park, and Eastsound. Melinda was easy to contact and very helpful with ideas about exploring the island. A perfect place to relax and unwind in a beautiful, tranquil setting.
