Overview

About the property

Private suites in a historic general store in Lancaster County.

Mussers’ Historic Country Suites is located in the former New Providence General Store in the village of New Providence. The store dates back to the early 1800s and was built in the federal style.

We offer two suites: The Storekeepers’ Quarters (vrbo listing 627211) and the Old Post Office. Both suites contain bright, great rooms, full kitchens with sitting and dining areas. Especially popular is the bedroom of the Old Post Office suite that features beds on three different levels, including a king-size lofted bed that overlooks a Lancaster County farm scape. Each suite offers a private bathroom with a walk-in shower and separate entrances with keys.

We are located just a few miles from Strasburg and within several minutes drive of most Lancaster County and Pennsylvania Dutch country attractions. The outlet malls, Sight and Sound Theater, and the Strasburg Railroad, for example, are all a short, 10-15 minute drive away.

Our historic country suites are open year ’round.

Although our suites are spacious and can accommodate a number of people they are popular stays for one or two persons. Our prices are set up to make our suites affordable for all who come. We have many guests who rent both suites for larger groups of families and friends and use the large common area to meet and socialize.

Children are very welcome as well as those who may have walking limitations. However we do have small stairways, steps and lofts that guests and parents should take into consideration when booking with Mussers’ Historic Country Suites. Because of our concern for other guests, we are sorry that we cannot accommodate pets or smoking in our suites.

Sleeps 1 to 5 people

There are enough beds to accommodate 5 people. In the sleeping room of the suite there are different levels. At the room’s highest level a king-sized bed has been built into the wall. A small window from the bed overlooks the flower garden, barn and Amish fields beyond. A twin-sized day bed in the middle loft sleeps one and on the lowest level is a full-sized oak bed that’s been in the family for a long time.

Has 2 rooms

A “sleeping room” and a large dine-in full kitchen/living area. This suite adjoins our spacious common area-the general store/library.

Sheets, bedspreads, blankets, towels

We provide the linens for your stay.

About Barb Musser

The Mussers have been restoring their home and having bonfires and turning ice cream on the property since 1986. When they aren’t hosting guests, Rob works as an attorney; Barb gardens, quilts and thinks up adventures for herself and grandchildren, Lou and Finn. Their children are grown but 56 Main Street is still home to Dosie, their Goldendoodle who keeps things lively.

When Rob and Barb take a vacation it is either to the log house in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania or on hiking vacations to places like Norway and Patagonia where you can drink water out of streams and breathe the cleanest air in the world. They visited Croatia and Turkey on their last hiking vacation.

Barb Musser purchased this apartment in 1986

Why Barb Musser chose Pennsylvania

After raising & homeschooling three kids, Barb focused her attention on creating a green, sustainable and organic retreat for guests in the historic home she and her husband, Rob, restored themselves over several decades.

The place is lovely! I love the character that older places have. The common area is divine.

Had a lovely time catching up with friends. The front porch was fun watching the Amish buggies go by. The back porch was great for playing games. Such a relaxing place.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review, Marian, and I hope you have a happy birthday today!! I should have asked if there was a birthday coming up soon for anyone in your group. So glad you and your out of state friends made this their rendezvous place for your annual get together this year. I love when people spend time here enjoying the house and property--just relaxing and having fun and laughing. The general storeroom/common area lends itself to times of special camaraderie. And thanks for welcoming the three Texan women that stayed in the upstairs Storekeeper's Suite to join you in conversation there. And lastly thanks for including me in on some of your game times, porch conversations and especially for the breakfast with the homemade goodies from your Ohio friend. Wow... Sincerely, Barb Musser

one of my favorite places on earth

  • 5 of 5

we visit mussers every october and it is so relaxing and refreshing--even when we bring our kids! we've been there as a family and just as a couples getaway. there is a place down the road that we buy apples at each year to bring home to make applesauce, and we love that we have the option to eat out or just cook at the suite--makes traveling with the whole family more affordable. my kids (and us) love to sit on the front porch and watch the horse and buggies drive by. barb is always very accommodating and we love that she uses all natural cleaning supplies. lancaster city is only a short ride away so we can also grab dinner or hit up lancaster central market while we are there. your also very close to the strasburg railroad and the train museum which my son and husband love.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Michelle. I look forward to your visit every year. It is our best compliment to have guests return year after year. Some of them come several times a year and, like you and yours, feel like family. I have a picture in my mind of your sweet children playing with the toys in the toy cupboard. I don't remember if it was your family or the guests before you that had a lot of them in the big tub with several children. Anyway, fills me with joy to see families enjoy our place. And, of course, Dosie Doodle enjoys your visits too. I think she sneaked in some kisses on your daughter. I'll try to get out to your place sometime this year. Thanks for the opportunity to tell you and your friends about the fabulous Norwex products. Is the applesauce finished??? Love, Barb

Great place!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Post Office suite and had an absolutely wonderful Labor Day visit to Lancaster County. The suite is exactly as advertised in the photos and is in part of a really cool old 1800s building. It has tons of rustic charm, lots of space, and the grounds are beautiful (lots of flowers and trees and well-landscaped). But also nicely updated with wifi and AC. This private suite has two sleeping areas with comfortable beds, private bath, plus a huge, well-stocked kitchen (with nice Van Gogh art on every wall :-). Barb is very friendly and responsive and had lots of helpful recommendations. It's such a relaxing place, we really enjoyed sitting on the front porch, driving around Amish country visiting farm stands, and took a day-trip to Gettysburg. This was a great home base for visiting PA and taking in the natural beauty of the area.

We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (including a baby) recently enjoyed a fantastic stay at this lovely property. The property itself is wonderful, with a huge yard full of lush flowers and vegetables that my daughter enjoyed picking and eating on the spot. The interior is very shabby chic and tasteful and if you are lucky Barb will give you a tour and explain how they undertook the renovations and created this very special place. Perhaps the best part is sitting out on the porch watching the horse-drawn buggies roll by. We can still hear the "clip clop" of horses' hooves. We truly enjoyed our stay and cannot say enough positive things about the property and the owners, especially Barb, who is just such a kind and generous person. My children loved her.

Great Mid-Summer Choice!

  • 5 of 5

On very short notice, we reached out for a 1 week vacation option. The owner was very accommodating, and helped us develop a plan for a very fun and relaxing vacation that wasn't too "touristy" (pointing out the very best options of the Amish Country experience. When visiting here in summer, make Nickel Mines pool a stop, especially if you have children. We selected the upper apartment (2 Bedrooms), and were delighted in every way with the property, as it was both historic, and modernly functional. Since we live in the region, I am sure we will stay here again!

Two thumbs up for this unique place!

  • 5 of 5

Our 3-generation family of four spent two nights in June in the Old Post Office Suite – after picking up our daughter from college outside Philly. We just loved the uniqueness of the space with the multi-level sleeping room, the well-equipped country kitchen, the private bathroom and the historic nature of the building. I really loved waking up in the morning and looking out the small window of the sleeping loft to see the lush back lawn and garden outside below. The building is on a small country road, meaning that we frequently heard and saw Amish families passing by in their horse-drawn buggies.

The beds were all very comfortable, and Barb keeps the place very clean, and welcoming. Barb was extremely helpful during the reservation process and throughout our stay. Also, there is internet and A/C. (There is a spacious lounge/library/common room where we could also have overflowed into – it is available for use by both units.)

We spent Sunday morning enjoying the Lancaster countryside visiting the town of Lititz (about 40 minutes away) – including the Chocolate Café (try their Turbo Mocha!), and the Cherry Acres barn-wood furniture store. In the afternoon we drove through farm country to visit the majestic Longwood Gardens and followed it up with a delicious dinner at one of Kennett Square’s many restaurants (just a few minutes from Longwood) before driving about 30 minutes back to the Musser’s in New Providence.

Bottom line – if we are in the area again, we would go back in a heart beat!! This was a special place to spend family time together.

Owner's Response: Alison, Thanks so much for your review for our place. It made me smile thinking of you, your husband, daughter and mother all here celebrating Father's Day. I do hope you'll be back. Longwood is a place you can enjoy over and over again. The Christmas display inside is so magnificient and the trees outside are covered in lights and unique decorations. I have enjoyed standing in the cold over the years with my children and grand-daughter waiting for the fountain show. It's especially beautiful when it is snowing. So come back!! We love our location because we are close to the tourist attractions but out of the hub bub in a more natural setting. And, yes, Longwood is definitely a big hit with our guests and the drive so beautiful. Again, thanks for taking the time to write a review for us. Sincerely, Barb
