For those of you, who are interested in architecture read on.

The story of Lilly’s Paradise Lakefront Cottage is much about its architecture .

The story of Lilly’s Paradise Lakefront Cottage starts with its renovation in 1988. The owners hired Peter Landon, an architect, to transform their gabled, cedar-sided house from a 1920’s vintage cottage to what it is now, a stunning Arts & Craft house, opening it up to lakeside views but retaining its warm wood walls and ceilings.

Landon carved a notch of space out of the original vintage cottage, and installed floor to ceiling windows and transoms to carry sunlight reflecting off the beach into every room and permitting through-house views of the lake. He created a dining room with three sunlit exposures to the lake. He created a TV den and a three season porch over looking the beach as well as a deck for lounging and dining and sunset viewing.

“In remodeling the vacation cottage, the architect, Peter Landon opened up this gabled, cedar-sided house to lakeside views while keeping much of its vintage 1920’s character.” (Quoted from a newspaper story at the time of its building.)

The owners love their house on Lake Michigan and now you can also.

Peter Landon, the architect for Lilly’s Paradise Lakeside Cottage won The American Wood Councils Wood Design Award (1988). The wood award won by the architect, Peter Landon, was a Merit Award given by the American Wood Council's 1988 Wood Design Award Program. The house was one of 12 buildings chosen among 419 National entries.

The house was featured in Metropolitan Home (1990) and Inland Architect (1990) lauding its stunning renovation in the art’s & craft manner.

None Better in Union Pier

  • 5 of 5

It's called a cottage but it is really a beautiful home. My family agreed that the pictures do not do it justice. Very easy to feel at home in right away. It seems everything is right where you would expect to find it - from the utensils in the kitchen to the switches on the walls. I spent the first days on the back patio looking at the lake, but in the end my favorite place was sitting in the front of the house, enjoying the front garden and watching the birds. Modern amenities such as AC and fast Wi-Fi made it easy for our teenagers. Did I mention it's the perfect beach house with its own beach? Great management service makes this a worry free rental. Enjoy!

OUR Summer Home in Union Pier

  • 5 of 5

This is our 10th year at this home! We truly do consider it "ours" and love it as if it really were. The moment we pull into the driveway each year, we breathe a sigh of relief (that everything still looks the way we love it!) and total contentment. When we first rented the house ten years ago from our neighbor-owners, it was the family cottage, not really on the rental market. The furniture had seen many summers of use (which made us feel totally comfortable) and the Philosophy of Summer for this family was NO TV AND NO AIRCONDITIONING. We agreed with that, in principle at least, but were quite happy to see cable, wifi and AC greet us as the years went by.

Each morning we walk to Whistle Stop for the newspaper then read it on the lake side deck which is the cooler side at that time. In the afternoon, we sit on the porch swing, shaded from the sun, watching our young grandchildren chase eachother around the huge front yard and magnificent, ancient oak tree that anchors the property. Or, if we are lucky, we take a nap and gently rock in the hammock, or watch the goldfinches, woodpecker, cardinals and squirrels busy themselves at the bird feeders (a fabulous recent addition)

A couple of years ago we were delighted to walk in and be greeted by new living room furniture and lovely rugs. This year, we noticed that the beautifully crafted and very unique windows, doors and screens had been lovingly replaced, the decks painted, and landscaping updated. The beds have luscious new sheets. There is a brand new refrigerator (definitely Glad to see that!) and dishwasher. So many improvements! Yet not an ounce of character and charm has been altered. ALL the things we love about this house - the magnificent wood interior, the already-mentioned windows, the homey kitchen with so many seating possibilities, the lovingly selected Fiesta dinnerware that is always in just the right place,.....all the goodness and simplicity and love that was put into this cottage at the time of the original restoration 20 years back, it is all still here. It is a place our children and grandchildren can't wait to get to. It has filled several picture albums and adorned one family Christmas card. It is OUR home in Michigan. We will share it with you if you promise to love it!😉

Oh! I forgot to mention the sunsets now on display right from the deck because of some clever tree-trimming. We don't even have to walk down to our private beach anymore!

My family and I have stayed at Lilly's Cottage the last three years. The owner has updated the cottage the past two years, and managed to leave most every original detail and true character in the house. The yard now has new extensive gardens. Patio stones have been placed around the house. The trees have been trimmed so now you can enjoy the beach view. New windows and doors have been installed. The kitchen has a new refrigerator and dishwasher. The living room has new sofa and chairs. The cottage has been painted. The cottage truly really shines now! It is our piece of paradise to escape to .

Beach Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Lily's Paradise was wonderful! The minute we drove up the drive we were captivated by the charm of the front yard and the front of the home. It was so peaceful to sit on the front porch swing or to rest on the hammock! The inside was amazing and we loved all the nook and crannies. The space was perfect for our family. I loved that the kitchen was full of all the interesting dishware. The best part of the home was the back deck and beach access! It was hard to move from the deck. The combination of the woods, sitting up above the beach and the sounds of the beach was just perfect!

My Happy Place

  • 5 of 5

This is a home away from home. The interior is so cozy and inviting that I would live here all year if I could. I love the wood interior which I think is so unique. The interior decorating is very intentional and creates a sense of warmth and family and not at all pretentious. The views from all of the many windows make you feel like you are outside even if it is raining. The house has everything thing that you need. I love to sit on the front porch on the swing and we enjoy the access to the private beach. This is my happy place and I look forward to my next visit!
