The House That Jack Built. WEARY OF THE BIG CITY… COME HERE!

Bedrooms 2
Space 780 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 loft Bedroom,1 Bathroom, 4 Sleeps,

Built in 1945 (not by Jack), this house is nestled on a quiet street 3 blocks off West Main. This jewel has been renovated inside and out (by Jack). Jack cut and milled the trees on the family farm creating every detail of the beautiful custom built kitchen along with each and every inch of trim and cabinets throughout the house. When it comes to one of a kind details you will find much to appreciate… The 'House that Jack Built' will speak to those looking for something more than merely an accommodation, it is an experience in loving craftsmanship.

The open floor plan offers plenty of seating in the living room, new central air/heat make the house the perfect stay in summer or winter. Vaulted ceiling in the kitchen with wonderful old farm table which seats 4 comfortably. A beautiful spiral staircase takes you to the open loft area with a double bed for additional guests.

The bedroom downstairs is a king. From the bedroom you continue outside to the large deck that sits in a beautiful private backyard. Grill some burgers, drink iced tea, or have a local LOBO beer. Tired of the backyard, sit on the front porch and watch the world go by and listen to the mourning doves and the roosters saying good morning and good night.

You are a 'walk away' from all the excitement called Main Street. Live music at Hondo's and Crossroads are a 'walk away'. If you don't want to make coffee before heading into your day. Ranch Roasters Coffee is just up the street where you will find the best latte, best scones and breakfast tacos in town. Tell Daniel Robin and Don sent you. The 'winery trail' is 15 to 20 minutes from this great location.

Any found items will be kept for one week and if not claimed will be given to a local charity. We are happy to mail anything you forget if you cover the cost of the shipping.

We live in this neighborhood. We love this neighborhood, once you come we think you will too. Come for a weekend, come for a week, come for a month or more...

About Robin Rucker

We moved here from Nashville in 2007, the call of a smaller town made us pack our bags, and we have never looked back. Robin is a producer in the film business, the majority of her work being with HGTV and DIY and enjoys the luxury of working from home. Don (aka Jack) is a contractor/builder/craftsman.His forte is restoring homes back to what they used to be… and enjoys every step of the process.

Robin Rucker purchased this house in 2001

Why Robin Rucker chose Hill Country

This was a run down rental property when we purchased it… Don used it for his shop for several years making beautiful cabinets and furniture and installing them in other peoples houses… when we decided it was time to bring it back to life… which we did.

What makes this house unique

This place has it all in terms of being in town but also very quiet and private. It is a short 2 block walk to all the shopping, restaurants and wine bars. It is perfect for a romantic get away or a girls weekend! We do not live on site so you have complete privacy. We allow a self check-in with the key left on site.( Please treat our home as you would your own:)

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved hosting you two and the pup.... Please come back soon... you are exactly the kind of guests we love to share our home with

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your visit to fredericksburg, we have had Jack's House with VRBO for almost 3 years and nobody has ever mentioned the staircase being a tight fit... sorry to hear you had a bit of trouble with it.

Lovely Spot in the Heart of Fredericksburg

  • 4 of 5

The house was just as pictured, our experience was wonderful, there were many nice touches such as a starter fire ready for nothing but a spark in the firepit in the backyard. Beds were comfortable and we wanted for nothing. Even though we didn't bring our pets, I loved the open pet policy that was available and sure did wish we had our fur babies there. The only reason I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars were that some rules were only disclosed day of arrival. Though we didn't this time, we often travel with some friends who smoke and were given some rules on the day of arrival that if anyone smoked anywhere on the property, we wouldn't receive our deposit fee back. Once again, not an issue this time. But it would have been an issue if any of our smoking friends had been with us and I would have appreciated knowing that up front before I booked. Otherwise, we had a wonderful stay and would do it again! Thanks for the great time!

Owner's Response: Hi Ruth, so glad you enjoyed your stay. It is clearly stated in the description of the house. Non Smoking Only: NO smoking on the premises, PLEASE..NOT ANYWHERE ON THE PREMISES. It also states it in the info sent prior to arrival. I do appreciate the feedback and will put it in bigger and bolder print. Thank you and please come again.

Love it!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have stayed here twice and really love the house and location. Large kitchen is open to the living room and is great use of the space. King size bedroom is perfect size. Very cool rustic/modern bathroom and shower. Back yard is our favorite spot. It's very private with very cool, down to earth design elements. Robin and Don are awesome folks too! They're renovating the house next door as well which would be perfect for a couple families or friends. As Arnold would say "we'll be back." :)

We had a great time!! We came in late Friday night but, check in was super easy! I stayed in contact with Robin throughout the entire stay and she gave us great recommendations!! The house was beautiful! Cute, quaint, quiet neighborhood! Great location for easy access to Main Street! It was pretty cold while we were there so we didn't walk from the house, but would have had weather permitted!! I would highly recommend this home and these owners!! Everything was spectacular!! We will definitely return!!
