About the property

4 bdrms sleeps 12, walk to Acropolis & Plaka, Great dining, cafes

Wow, Athens' only furnished vacation rental that offers 4 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms! This is the choice for couples traveling together: privacy, your own space, and plenty of space to relax as a group - whether in the open floor plan living room, on the spacious veranda, enjoying the illuminated Parthenon, or on the terrace with a nightcap overlooking the entire city of Athens, including the Acropolis and Mount Lykavittos.

This bright and airy, universally designed, easily accessible apartment on one level in a contemporary mixed use building sleeps up to 11 guests in 4 bedrooms. Three bedrooms have a Queen bed plus a Twin, while the fourth includes a Double Wall bed, which also serves as an office if you simply need a quiet place to work or read.

Every bedroom in this apartment has its own en suite full bathroom, all with spa hydromassage showers, and one with a Jacuzzi style tub. Basil and I can’t decide which is the “master of all masters” - the spacious double bedroom with the glass enclosed walk in double roll-in hydromassage shower, or the triple bedroom with an en suite Jacuzzi/hydromassage shower/bath. Additionally, there is a Queen sized sofa bed in the living room.

The open floor plan living room and kitchen area leads out to a spacious veranda, with an additional living room setup and dining area. Our guests love spending time on the veranda, be it for breakfast before they head out for the day, or after a long day exploring the city. There is nothing like your own private veranda from which to contemplate the Parthenon atop the Acropolis while sipping a glass of Greek wine or enjoying an ouzo.

We don't usually offer stays of less than 3 nights unless combined with a longer stay at the other end of your trip. Occasionally we have a hole to fill between other bookings, in which case we will offer 2 nights. You can book & pay online, but you will still need to sign our booking form and provide a list of guest names and ages along with a major credit card in lieu of a cash damage deposit.

About Greek Vacation Rentals

Wow, who would have thought when I told my husband I wanted to buy a little pied-a-terre in his hometown, Athens, Greece, that I'd end up with the greatest accidental career of my life? Born and raised in Chicago, my love for travel was evident early on. Perhaps it was my arrival in the world, early one December morning, way quicker than my siblings had, in fact so quick we were still enroute to the hospital, and I still hold the title of youngest patient ever admitted to that north suburban hospital! (And thus, as a Sagittarius, characteristically smitten with wunderlust). I traveled my home country extensively with my family as a child, and was fortunate to have parents who encouraged us to study a second language young.

Why Greek Vacation Rentals chose Attica

While my language of choice as a child was French, my culture of choice was Greek - My earliest jobs were always in Chicago's Greek diners, my university days filled with hours playing backgammon in the cafeteria with my Greek friends, and my Eurail passes always started and ended my European backpacking holidays in Greece. So no one was surprised when I met Basil, a romantic writer but practicing translator and linguist, born and bred in Athens, but transplanted to Chicago, fell in love, and married him. While our life in Chicago was full, rehabbing a warehouse we purchased to house ourselves, our son and our growing Greek translation agency, I longed to plant some roots for our family in Basil's hometown. A small studio overlooking Mount Lykavittos was to be our Athens crash pad, but thanks to what seemed then an unfortunate turn of events, our home in Athens ended up being the beautiful Athens First Luxury Duplex. Larger than we had planned, offering it as a short term furnished rental seemed the logical way to afford it. Little did we realize that it would become so popular we'd be sleeping on friend's couches rather than in our own Athens home! Tired of being homeless in Athens, we purchased a second penthouse directly adjacent to the Athens First. In 2006 we completed the renovations of three additional short term furnished rentals.

What makes this apartment unique

As I said early on, this is the greatest accidental business one could imagine, and I love sharing my adopted city with visitors. Our guests repeatedly thank us for the little extras that often mean so much when you are planning what is often a once in a lifetime trip. As an ex-pat in Athens, I know the wonderful off the beaten path places that can make a holiday special, and I also know how to stay on the tourist path without feeling like you are being herded along with the crowds. Feel free to email me with your questions as you plan your trip to Athens - just one of the little extras guests of Greek Vacation Rentals will find when they share our homes in Athens.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We received a day walking tour with guide which added so much to our understanding of what we were seeing and the history Athens provides us! WE LOVE POPI! My daughters talked Greek Mythology, history, barbies, travel, and walked away with a wonderful new friend.

Carole was able to put together a wonderful day of Greek cooking in the Apartment with a wonderful pastry chef published in one of Greece's cooking magazines. We shopped in the local farmers market for veggies, bakery for bread, wine shop to top off our dinner, and the store across the street for some of Athens best cheeses. After all our shopping was done we began making the best meal I have ever tasted. Evi, our chef, was able to include our girls and my parents in the whole process. It was nice using the apartment for the class as the girls were able to participate or not at their own pace. My parents were able to relax and enjoyed the show. And finally we enjoyed a glass of wine together with our chef and then ate a magnificent meal we had learned to prepare.

Nick our driver also recommended by our hosts, took us on two day trips and was our airport connection. I cannot say enough about how he made sure our family was comfortable and even helped my parents with a little restaurant get away while we played on the beach.

When we returned to Ukraine my parents and kids could not stop talking about how wonderful vacation they had! I was a hero, and it was all due to my secret weapon Carole. While in Athens we spoke about her everyday and she was our 7th traveler. Even on the day we were cooking we were sitting at the computer exchanging emails and it felt as if she were cyber cooking with us. It was so much fun, relaxing, and all around the BEST vacation we as a family have taken because the stress of planning and knowing what to do wasn't there. Even our last minute 3 Island tour was a breeze because I didn't have to take care of any of the details.

You would be crazy not to stay here and be well cared for by Carole and her friends.

Basil & Carole's American homes in Athens are often copied, but never duplicated. We're still real vacation rental owners - we stay in our home when we are in Athens - so it is truly still our own home away from home. This means we know the beds are great & the kitchen stocked with everything you need to really cook. But we also love to be tourists in our adopted city, too.

Easter in Athens

  • 5 of 5

The property was as advertised and exceeded our expectations. We could not have asked for better hosts or better management in the handling of our vacation experience. Looking forward to staying in one of their other properties when we visit Chicago in the future.

Loved it

  • 5 of 5

Clean and uncluttered. Plenty of space. A much-appreciated basket of snacks were awaiting us upon arrival. The kitchen has all the appliances one could want, and plenty of nice dishes, pots and pans, etc. (It doesn't feel as if the owners were trying to outfit the apartment as minimally as possible.) Comfy beds. Lovely terrace. Nice to have the opportunity to do our laundry. Quiet as well, as most of the building houses offices, not apartments. The owners were great about responding to questions and providing us with plenty of info -- and all the guidebooks were a very thoughtful addition.

One caveat and a small suggestion. Suggestion: provide a simple translation or "graphic" for the washing machine and dryer. Our "welcoming person" DID explain it, but most of it was forgotten in the midst of arrival and a lot of additional information being offered. The German labelling did not give many hints about all the options on the dial!

The caveat is location. The apartment is in a "regular" neighborhood on a central street. So if you are wanting the convenience of being near the tourist-y neighborhoods and sites, this may not be your place. The neighborhood is fine -- perfectly safe -- and has a grocery store across the street (and also shoe stores and a bakery and banks and insurance companies and mysterious other things). But it is a schlep to get to the museums and archeological sites and more interesting areas (about 30 minute walk). Not close to Metro (which, by the way, is a great system). And we did not decipher the bus system, except for one ride. Plenty of taxis, though (but be prepared: while most Greek people seemed to speak/understand plenty of English, and even my minimal bad Greek, the taxi drivers almost universally did not). (Also, the photo o the night-lit Parthenon must have been taken through a telescope.) LOVED the rooftop terrace! Thank you for a wonderful trip!

Beautiful apartment with modern touches

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is in walking distance to many of the main sites and is quiet and secure. It is beautifully decorated and easily housed 7 of us. Both Carole and Nadia were very helpful and flexible with us (icy roads delayed our arrival to Athens.) I would highly recommend this as a place to stay in Athens.

Clean, convenient and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was accurately described in HomeAway. Carole, the owner, e-mailed us a very detailed document on all aspects of the apartment, sites to see, things to do, local restaurants and cafes and other things to help us quickly get oriented with the place and Athens. The apartment was immaculate, and the local caretaker, Nadia, was readily accessible and helpful. There was a nice rooftop deck with a 360 degree view of the city, including the Acropolis. The major sites were within walking distance or a short taxi ride away.

We really enjoyed our stay and recommend it to others..

Perfect! Exactly the way it was depicted in the photos

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Athens in Carole and Basil's 4 bedroom/4 bath condo. There were 4 over 50++ something women who travelled and everything was perfect. There was a nice basket with a bottle of wine, all kinds of goodies and Ouzo chilling in the fridge when we arrived.

The location was great with the best Greek restaurant literally right next door (souvlaki to die for) Great bakery on the corner ~ best chocolate I've had. The grocery and liquor store was across the street. What more could we want?!

The beds were all very comfortable each with their own a/c. It was so nice to have a living room and kitchen to gather while we were in the condo.

We were so happy we each had our own bathroom in our bedrooms and the washer and dryer came in handy so we could have clean clothes prior to starting our cruise.

Nick, the driver, was not only handsome but prompt, courteous, professional and a veritable walking encyclopedia of Greece. We loved having our private driver to take us to the Temple of Poseidon and Delphi ++ a very comfortable ride to and from the airport.

I would definitely recommend this condo. It was safe, quiet most of the time (sometimes at night the bands played until wee hours of the morning), close to everything we needed and taxis were plentiful, if needed.

Carole has been so kind and very patient with my million questions and last minute changes.
