Perfect for romatic breaks, history enthusiasts and families, sleeping 2 +2.
About Michelle Harrison
My name is Michelle and I live in the nearby town of Sandwich with my 3 daughters and 5 cats. I spend my time managing my two holiday cottages, working and being Mum.
Michelle Harrison purchased this Castle in 2011
Why Michelle Harrison chose Dover
I bought the Gate House in 2011 at auction. When I first saw it, I just loved the history of the building and knew it could be a fairy tale place to stay for holidays. The cottage was completely renovated and turned into the beautiful cottage it is today. It was featured on Homes Under the Hammer, which was a very nerve wracking process! I have another holiday cottage in Sandwich which sleeps 2. My website is: www.michellescottages.co.uk
What makes this Castle unique
The Gate House has such a romantic feel to it that it is perfect for special anniversaries, honeymoons and romantic breaks. It is equally appealing to history enthusiasts and families who enjoy unique cottages. Equally, children love staying in their own little castle for holidays, so this cottage really does have universal appeal. The cottage is Grade II listed so, although being thoroughly modernised inside, does still have the ambience of staying in a genuine castle.

Second visit to the Gate House
This is a unique and charming property which offers a very comfy night's sleep! One or two issues which will quickly be rectified by the conscientious owner but I just wanted to explain my score: kitchen short of a few things (no peeler, only 4 table knives, no kitchen roll). Popcorn had been left in microwave. No cover for spare duvet. Great that dogs are permitted but it's not ideal because there's no roadside gate, and perhaps the description should make it clear.
I'm so pleased you decided to come and visit again!
I am sorry the microwave hadn't been thoroughly cleaned before your arrival, this is something I will address with the cleaning team. Kitchen roll isn't something which is routinely provided as this is a self catering cottage.
Regarding the duvet for the sofa bed - your booking was for 2 adults and I'm afraid perhaps I should not have assumed it was for a couple. The extra bedding is usually only left when the booking is for more than 2 people or when people have booked to bring children as it is assumed only the main bed will be required. I will, however, take on board that even when guests don't stipulate that they will need the extra bedding, it should be checked that when the booking is for 2 adults, they indeed are a couple. As I always say to guests prior to check in, if they have any problems or questions to contact me, if you had done this I would have had a duvet cover dropped to you immediately.
There is a gate on the main part of the garden which is to the side of the cottage, this area is completely enclosed so safe for dogs, as advertised. This has not changed since your previous stay. Most front gardens are not fully enclosed and are open to the street, as is the one for the cottage.
The crockery and cutlery is provided for a maximum of 4 guests staying, hence the set of cutlery for 4 people. The peeler must have gone missing, I will ensure this is replaced.
I am sorry these things appear to have detracted from your stay. I believe most of them, could have been rectified had you contacted me during your stay, with the exception of the gate on the front garden, though this has not changed since your previous stay and as stated above is the norm for front gardens.
I do hope you'll come and stay again.
Great base for the south coast. The property had everything we needed for 2 adults and a dog. Soooooo cosy xxx
Clean,cosy,quirky and very comfortable
Really unbelievable !
From the outside, the castle looks small, charming and beautiful. But when you get inside, there's plenty of space !
The interior of the house is very well equipped, it is weighty and cozy.
Living room is very comfortable to spend an evening.
The kitchen is perfectly equipped and has everything you need.
The bedroom is very cozy and has a comfortable bed.
Bathroom is clean and well-equipped.
Location very great, short walk to Dover Castle,White Cliffs and Dover`s town centre.
We spent a wonderful week in this charming mini-castle.
Highly recommend this unique, clean and fantastical place.
Thank you,Michelle, one more time for fantastical, charming and beautiful mini-castle !
Absolutely stunning very much enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back!!
Extremely well kept, decorated to suit the quaint cottage-castle feel of the building. It's a short walk away from Dover Castle too, to our surprise, and just up the hill from Dover's town centre. Bed was very comfortable, kitchen is well stocked, and the living room perfectly cozy, and the bathtub is wonderfully deep. We wish we could've stayed longer! Parking was tight, and bathroom has a handheld showerhead (which served us just fine!) The road it is off of is quite busy, but we couldn't even hear the traffic with the windows shut. Michelle was very responsive to all our little questions and needs.
Thankyou for your kind review, I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay!
There is so much to enjoy in the surrounding area, from the medieval town of Sandwich and ancient City of Canterbury to the traditional seaside towns of Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate.
Just 20 minutes drive away, Canterbury is a wonderful city to explore with fantastic shopping, the famous cathedral, river tours around the ancient waterways and the Canterbury Tales attraction.
For sandy beaches head to Braodstairs, Ramsgate or Margate (which has a seven mile stretch of glorious sand!) Famous for the Turner Gallery and Dreamland, vintage theme park, Margate is enjoying a wonderful renaissance with plenty of independent shops to browse. For a 1950s feel head to Braodstairs, with it's 7 bays to choose from, there is something for everyone. Surfing on Joss Bay, traditional rides and fun on Viking Bay or peace and quiet on Louisa Bay and the stunning rocks of Botany Bay. Dogs are welcome on these beaches from Autumn to Spring.
The whole area is an absolute haven for history enthusiasts with Dover Castle literally on our doorstep. Take a tour of the war time and hospital tunnels for an unrivalled experience of life underground during WW2. The rest of the castle is brought to life during the many events held throughout the year with costumed performers, jousting and re-enactments of battles. There is so much to see and do that it is hard to fit everything in to just one day. Climb to the top of the Keep for amazing views of the coast and even across to France on a clear day.
There are two other castles very close by which offer completely differing experiences to Dover: Walmer Castle with its' beautiful gardens and Deal Castle, just a mile up the road. All three of these castles are managed by English Heritage so free to enter for members.
Step back in time visiting Sandwich, just 15 minutes drive along the coast. Known as the most complete medieval town in the country, it is full of narrow winding street with overhanging medieval houses and hosts many exciting festivals throughout the year. The picturesque quay, tree lines river walks around the town walls and many independent shops and eateries, many happy hours can be wiled away in this beautifully preserved town.
Whitstable, another fascinating seaside town is close by, with the famous Oyster Festival, though is a lovely place to visit all year round. Again, a plethora of independent shops and eateries this unspoilt town is a joy.
With easy access to both the ferries and channel tunnel, the Gate House is the perfect place to stay for a day trip across to France or Belgium.
Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are close by and are famous for their conservation work. Take a walk through the lemurs enclosure and watch the tigers being fed for a real close up experience.
A little further are several more fascinating places to visit: Leeds Castle just an hour away; Hever Castle with it's stunning grounds; the pantiles at Tunbridge Wells. The list goes on. There is so much to see and do here you'll want to visit again and again to see everything.
