About this property

"Les Mirabelles" in deep rural France -

Les Mirabelles (formerly Fig Tree) - This gite is part of an ancient farmhouse which is set in its own private grounds of 0.5 acres. The property, which dates from before the French revolution, has been tastefully restored to include all modern amenities without losing its rustic charm and character.

"Les Mirabelles" gite was the old cattle shed, housing hay lofts and oxen which ploughed the local fields and vineyards. Now renovated to a charming, self-contained accommodation, and replicating the characteristic beams, stone walls and floors which is set in the deep French countryside. The gite overlooks the garden and mixed fruit orchard where the chickens roam and provide fresh eggs on request! The gite is secluded and separate from the main farmhouse with its own front door and double door opening on to the garden. Guests have the private use of the swimming pool.

You enter the gite through the front door and you are greeted with an open plan living area which is light and airy.

There are a number of walks - the modest Gardonette stream is an amazing route takings its source not far from Monbazillac and then losing itself in the Dordogne some 50km or so. A journey that mingles between hillsides covered with vineyards, sunflower and cornfields, meadows and small shady valleys which in passing, greets hamlets, or chateaux and provides the rambler with a few surprises! The Gardonette takes the rambler into another experience.

Saussignac takes you approximately 15-20 minutes to reach along an old Roman road through the vines. Gageac has a beautiful chateau and the superb vineyard of 'Clos de Vigne' - the subject of Patricia Atkinson's best selling books - "The Ripening Sun" and "La Belle Saison".

Sigoules is set amongst the vineyards where you will find a selection of shops (baker, butcher, grocery store, a hairdresser and also a doctor and pharmacy!|). For those of you who desire an active outdoor break, the area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf (18 hole) at the famous "Chateau de Vigiers" - just a few kilometres away and may be followed by an excellent lunch or dinner in their restaurant. Tennis and horse ricin are among other sports facilities available.

All summer long, the medieval town of Bergerac has many wonderful restaurants - just 15 minutes drive from the gite. Saussignac, Sigoules, Eymet and Issigeac and other local towns have markets, concerts and exhibitions with lots to do and see.

Fig Tree Gite offers you a perfect location from which to base yourself whilst you pursue whatever activities you enjoy most. The gite is set in half-acre of land with typical country garden and chickens roaming peacefully. A private swimming pool which is not overlooked, offers privacy for the bather. The gite accommodation is full of rustic charm with oak beams, a log fire. There is an open plan dining and sitting room, with kitchen attached. A modernised shower/wet room is on the same floor. A mezzanine floor provides bedroom for 2 people. TV is provided with numerous DVD's as well as board games.

A charming gîte in the wine country
We had a very nice relaxing stay in Les Mirabelles. Jill was a gracious host and even supplied some staples in the fridge on our arrival as well as a bottle of wine! The gîte is beautifully decorated with lovely antique furniture and dinnerware and a well equipped kitchen. The area has a lot of villages with wonderful markets on different days of the week as well as being close to Bergerac. Jill has an amazing, well organized, amount of information for the area. A good restaurant in the area is the Grappe d’Or where we enjoyed the specialty du Périgord. A very nice stay and highly recommend!

Absolutely Fantastic!!
We have stayed at HomeAway rentals over the last six years. This place is by far the best we have encountered. Jill and Marie-Helene have been fantastic hosts, giving us privacy but at the same time seeing that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. From the minute we walked in the front door we knew we would enjoy each and every day. To save us an immediate trip to the grocery store, Jill provided a bottle of wine, fresh eggs from the chickens (who roam the yard), milk in the refrigerator, pizza and salad, fresh tomatoes, and coffee for the next morning. Located about 20 minutes from Bergerac in the country, this home-away-from home is located close to major grocery stores, lots of hiking trails (extensive maps of places to see and explore are provided), and loads of old chateaux and vineyards (for those who love wine). The house (a renovated barn dated from the mid 1700's) is in immaculate condition, very clean and comfortable in every regard. The pool, although the weather was a little cool this time of year, looked very inviting, and the flowers and garden were a delight. All in all, this rental could not have been better!! A very relaxing visit. Thanks Jill and Marie-Helene. Hope to see you next year!. Best always, Joanne and Dick.

Host profile image
Jill became the new owner of Fig Tree in 2016 and as from 2017 has renamed it LES MIRABELLES . Jill is an experienced hotelier, having recently retired but knowing how to make guests feel welcome and wanting to return again and again. Jill's more recent occupation was running her own business in London, training care staff to care for elderly people. Jill speaks French and English and loves the French way of life.

Why they chose this property

the charm of the French countryside, the history of the house and gite is fascinating both of which is full of rustic character. Believed to date back to before the French revolution this part of France is full of history during the 17th century. Jill has been visiting friends in the Aquitaine region for the last 30 years and has developed a love of the French way of life, its cuisine and the language.

What makes this property unique

The benefits of the gite offers peace and tranquility in the very rural French countryside. The gite is set in half-acre with a private swimming pool, not overlooked by any neighbouring property. The gite opens out to a lovely garden being disturbed only by the occasional wandering chicken!
