About this property

Finchale Abbey, first floor apartment within an historic 11th Century Farmhouse.

A stunning property within an 11th Century farmhouse, this first floor apartment has been recently modernised to a high standard while keeping within the strict guidelines that are in place when restoring a listed property.

The property has three bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as a beautifully fitted kitchen and a large living room.

The bespoke handmade oak kitchen, has fully integrated appliances with a rangemaster cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer.

Master bedroom has a queen sized bed and views of the Priory.

Second bedroom twin single beds.

Third bedroom has a bespoke handmade high sleeper double bed and an additional single bed.

All of the bedrooms benefit from window seats to be used to enjoy the beautiful views.

The living room is a stunning room with sash windows to three sides and the bespoke hexagonal dining table sits in the bay window giving views over the river. (This sash bay window still contains the original glass and during renovation this was protected by English Heritage and refurbished.) The room has a TV with Sky and DVD player.

The family bathroom has a corner bath, double shower, WC and basin with views over the priory and river.

There is also a separate WC.

The property has full central heating with traditional cast iron radiators.

Free Wifi is available for use during your stay.

Owners of the property own fishing rights over a two mile stretch of the river Wear which is a prime salmon and brown trout river and visitors to the property are welcome to fish in the river during their stay. (Environment agency rod licences must be held.)

We advise children over nine only due to close proximity of the river.

We can provide discount vouchers for Beamish museum (25% off) and discounts for other local attractions.

Riverside park stay
This place was magic and when the park closed and cleared out, some wine next to the river was exactly what my soul needed.

Simply Wonderful from Start to Finish
Convenient to so much of the North and our nearby family, we highly recommend this property and look forward to visiting again. The apartment is spacious and charming, easily and comfortably accommodating my extended family of seven. The kitchen is more than adequate to self-cater. The bedrooms are numerous and comfortable. The living room is well appointed and full of artifacts of history of the place. The only drawbacks are the lack of a second shower, and the spotty access to cellular for US-based phones—the later contributing to the relaxing mood of the place. But the grounds! My wife and mother-in-law grew up visiting the ruined abbey adjacent to the apartment, and having the opportunity to share that experience with my young son was truly special. We spent our days exploring the abbey, learning about monastic life, visiting the river, and exploring nearby Cocken Wood. The park is so extensive that we didn’t even find the picnic ground until the last day of our ten day stay, and wished that we had more time to avail ourselves of it. Next time. Special thanks to Ann, Jack, and Irene for taking such good care of us!

Location is great
Location is fabulous especially to be able to walk your dog nearby in the picnic field and nearby. The apartment is very much as per the photos and very scenic views from all windows.

Stunning setting, very comfortable property
The apartment is in a stunning setting. Don't be put off by the fact this is in a caravan park, the two are separate and every window in the property has a lovely view. We spent much of one day just walking by the river and enjoying the scenery. The apartment is very well appointed with good quality fittings and has everything you need. Unlike many properties, there is ample seating for everyone, both at the tables and in the spacious sitting room. Ann was incredibly helpful. We made full use of the discounts offered into Beamish and enjoyed all the welcome goodies. Just be aware that, being an old property, not everything is on the level so you just have to be aware of the odd step in and out of rooms. We would highly recommend this property. We only stayed for three nights, but it would make an excellent base for a much longer stay.
