Minimal cabin but comfortable and romantic exceeding expectations

  • 5 of 5

Coming down Austin Creek Road I was getting increasingly excited by the thickening grove of huge redwoods and the front yard of the cabin was teeming with them. The cabin at first seemed a little bare but after a few minutes we realized it was minimal but cozy, comfortable and romantic. It easily accommodated my wife and me and our two girls and we didn't even use the Airstream. The decor was retro but also chic with some throwback touches that were both nostalgic and romantic. We particularly enjoyed the loft "suite" with an awesome collection of jazz and rock records. After stocking the small but functional kitchen we quickly found the path down to Austin Creek. We may have benefited from a very rainy winter but the creek in mid-July was amazing. Far prettier than we could have hoped, surrounded by hills of redwoods and deep swimming holes better than any pool. If you were willing to traverse some rocky beaches and wade in some brisk water, there were endless opportunities to explore. Ending the day on the hammock looking up at redwoods and listening to the creek babble was like a dream. Having one bathroom was not a problem and no TVs was exactly the experience we were looking for. The wi-fi range/speed was totally acceptable. The only complaints about the cabin was that some areas could be better lit at night (kitchen) and a slight musty smell in the downstairs bedroom next to the bathroom which could be managed by opening a few windows. Canoeing down the Russian River, hiking in Armstrong Woods, driving up and down Route 1 (coastal highway) and cruising the back road wineries (try Westside Road towards Healdsburg) made this a trip to remember. I highly recommend both the area and the cabin.

Missing the cozy factor big time

  • 2 of 5

First off, we are true adventurers. We've been on a 6 week camping trip, sleeping in a small pop out tent, most of our camping trips are TRUE off the grid locales. So, we can ruff it. When we stay at places such as this cabin, we're prepared for not as cozy as our perfect home. But um...nothing cozy about this place. We would've been cozier in a tent and sleeping bag. First off, as soon as you step foot into the cabin, you're hit with a STRONG mold and mildew smell. That never goes away. The beds...we slept in the 'cozier' upstairs room the first night. The bed, sheets, comforter all smelled like mold. The bed felt damp for some reason. Our legs even feeling clammy and damp from lying in it. The second night, we decided to try the downstairs bed. Didn't smell like mold but felt damp as well. I dunno...nothing as anti cozy as a damp bed. We never got great sleep there. We were in town for wine tasting/my birthday weekend and in it would've been great to be able to lounge and feel comfy in the cabin after wine tasting. One of the huge sellers for us in renting this cabin was the photos of the fire place. Don't even think about using it. Comes with so many high maintenance instructions such as 'outside temp has to be colder than indoor temp and no real wood.' Decor is cute, mod, nice enough amenities in kitchen but that's pretty much it. Too bad. In the summer, would be a great spot for a summer getaway. But we'll never stay here again. What was up with the mold smell and damp beds...seriously.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry to hear about this issue. We wish you had contacted our property manager right away, we could have made your stay more comfortable with dry sheets and comforters. I have checked with our property manager and she confirmed that nobody had contacted her. We encourage our guests to report issues or problems to us as soon as possible so we can help to fix it. This year's unusually heavy rain season was a blessing for California but created some issues for the house. We are dealing with this issue now by airing the house and keeping the heat on low even when the house is empty. Again, our apologies you had to deal with this but thank you for bringing it to our attention so we can fix it for future guests. Regarding the fireplace, we stated in our listing description that it's temporarily not operational. Sorry if this wasn't clearly communicated. The fireplace is original from the late 60's and we have been on an epic journey trying to restore it while making it user friendly and safe. If all else fails, we plan to replace it with a Malm replica before next winter.

Lovely home in a beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend here with a few little hiccups. The house is gorgeous and beautifully furnished. The setting is idyllic; we loved the redwoods and running creek. The airstream rental ended up being unusable due to a leak, but the hosts were prompt in response and took care of us. We were never able to get the fireplace working without filling the house with smoke, even when following instructions and making sure it was cold enough outside. We were bummed, as we were really looking forward to that aspect of our stay. The kitchen is a bit tight/lacking a few items for cooking big meals, but our stay was overall very nice.

Cozy and Fun!

  • 4 of 5

This was AMAZING! The creek was running, and the kids LOVED it! It was perfect to play around, the current was not too strong. VERY kid-friendly!

The cabin was cozy, and everything was neat from the moment we first got there.

We went to the creek almost EVERY day! The kids built a fort in the trees, made a rock collection, saw some wildlife (multiple banana slugs, a gecko, and more), swung from tree branches over water, went floating down the creek in some inner tubes we bought, and ran down to the creek every morning after breakfast. The phrase "I want to go to the creek!" was commonly heard.

We took day trips to Armstrong National Forest and Jenner. The cabin was the perfect place to plop down and rest after a long day.

We managed to play badminton with the provided equipment. After a few tries, we managed to get it down pat (well, sort of).

A few problems: We couldn't figure out how to get the sauna to work, but it had a wonderfully powerful scent of pine (very relaxing!). Also, the oven didn't work.

Overall, the stay here was AWESOME and I would LOVE to come back. One of the BEST places EVER!

Great property for a weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

This lovely 1960s period cabin was extremely well-maintained, very clean, and is situated in a picturesque location in a redwood grove. The lofted bedroom provided a charming spot to relax, listen to some classic vinyl on the record player, and gaze out the giant A-frame windows into the trees. The kitchen was well-equipped for a mix of stovetop and grill cooking, with plenty of places to stock up on food (the Safeway in Guerneville is less than a 20 minute drive from the cabin). The sauna was surprisingly easy to use and added a great way to unwind after a long day of kayaking down the Russian River and hiking in Armstrong Redwoods. We also enjoyed using the fireplace. The owners Trent and Anya provided thorough directions for getting to the house and instructions for enjoying the amenities. It's a beautiful property and a great weekend getaway.

Charming, thoughtfully designed cabin in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a super family holiday. There was still enough water in the creek in May for a proper adult swim, and the location is superb. The vinyl really made it for us - though finding Purple Rain was a bit of a tearjerker! The trees on the plot are stunning and there are some lovely touches in the cabin. It was perhaps a little less pristine than the photos suggest, but actually we loved the period appliances and original fittings still intact.

Our only suggestions would be relatively small things: Even on hot days the cabin is chilly first thing, so with hard floors we wish we'd brought slippers. The outdoor security lights rather spoiled the ambience at night - we couldn't see the sky or the stars, and they shine right into the cabin with no obvious place to turn them off. We were also a little unnerved by the 4 or so webcams pointed around the plot.

But overall we had a great time in a very special spot. Thanks Trent and Anya for sharing your space with us.

As you can see from the photos, we are surrounded by redwoods. Old California still alive and thriving here. Unspoiled beauty from the redwoods to the ocean. This place feels very remote, but is minutes away from many activities.
