Minimal cabin but comfortable and romantic exceeding expectations

  • 5 of 5

Coming down Austin Creek Road I was getting increasingly excited by the thickening grove of huge redwoods and the front yard of the cabin was teeming with them. The cabin at first seemed a little bare but after a few minutes we realized it was minimal but cozy, comfortable and romantic. It easily accommodated my wife and me and our two girls and we didn't even use the Airstream. The decor was retro but also chic with some throwback touches that were both nostalgic and romantic. We particularly enjoyed the loft "suite" with an awesome collection of jazz and rock records. After stocking the small but functional kitchen we quickly found the path down to Austin Creek. We may have benefited from a very rainy winter but the creek in mid-July was amazing. Far prettier than we could have hoped, surrounded by hills of redwoods and deep swimming holes better than any pool. If you were willing to traverse some rocky beaches and wade in some brisk water, there were endless opportunities to explore. Ending the day on the hammock looking up at redwoods and listening to the creek babble was like a dream. Having one bathroom was not a problem and no TVs was exactly the experience we were looking for. The wi-fi range/speed was totally acceptable. The only complaints about the cabin was that some areas could be better lit at night (kitchen) and a slight musty smell in the downstairs bedroom next to the bathroom which could be managed by opening a few windows. Canoeing down the Russian River, hiking in Armstrong Woods, driving up and down Route 1 (coastal highway) and cruising the back road wineries (try Westside Road towards Healdsburg) made this a trip to remember. I highly recommend both the area and the cabin.

Beautiful weekend get away, wish we stayed longer...

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful location on the creek, cabin is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Kitchen is fully stocked to cook meals which was appreciated. We had wonderful oysters and wine in town as well, so many options and things to do. The bathroom is re-done with nice amenities and the beds are wonderful, all the comforts of a hotel while being in a creekside cabin in the redwoods! We regretted only staying two days, we should have stayed at least 5. We have two 7yr olds who loved every minute of the stay as well! Will book again for sure...

Pros: Gorgeous place nestled next to towering redwoods and a babbling creek. It's renovated and retro chic with a beautiful wooden interior. The photos are accurate. We loved the record player, the fireplace, the retro kitchen, and the loft upstairs. It was a perfect getaway to spend quality time with family without the distractions of TV. The cabin and kitchen were clean had everything we needed, though I would recommend adding some retro board games. We purchased a pack of cards. Unfortunately it was too cold to enjoy the outdoor space but I imagine an afternoon grilling and lounging in the hammock by the river to be quite lovely.

Cons: The surveillance cameras outside bothered me. There are two up in the trees, one of which seems to point AT the glass facade of the house, so there's the creepy, are-we-being-watched feeling. Adding to that is a holographic framed artwork of eyes across from the shower. It was also freezing when we arrived, granted it was February and 46 degrees outside. Took the house a couple hours to warm up, but once we had the fireplace roaring and the record player going, it was super cozy. The floors are really cold, even with socks, so bring slippers.

Owner's Response: We are happy to hear you enjoyed the cabin and the surrounding area. I just wanted to address your concern about the cameras. They are there purely for security reasons. We don't live on the property and it's helpful to have the cameras in case of emergencies and also to keep an eye on the creek during the heavy rains. The camera that is facing the house is not in service and we check the other ones only when we don't have guests staying at the property. Thank you for your comments, we always appreciate our guests feedback.

The Only Mistake...

  • 5 of 5

...was that we didn't book this cabin longer!

Stayed in this cabin for 2 nights and it was worth every penny. Absolutely charming and incredible. It was just isolated enough that we were able to enjoy the Redwoods in peace, but close enough to the Pacific Ocean and a number of cute towns and wineries.

We are absolutely coming back time and time again. This place is truly a hidden treasure.

As you can see from the photos, we are surrounded by redwoods. Old California still alive and thriving here. Unspoiled beauty from the redwoods to the ocean. This place feels very remote, but is minutes away from many activities.
