About Theresa Emmerling

18 years ago we bought our cottage on Mill Lake to have a quiet place to go and get away from the busy every day routines. We also wanted our children to have a place to take their friends and enjoy the great outdoors. Our time was split between relaxing and having fun. Our summer weekends were consumed with tubing, fishing, swimming, attending the Hot Air Balloon Festivals, Worlds Largest Breakfast Table along with lots of local attractions. Winter weekends were spent ice fishing, ice skating, sledding and indoor puzzles and games. Thru the years, our family has built many memories on this lake and in town at festivals. In 2012 we purchased and rebuilt the house next to ours. Now our friends and family can also enjoy the area but yet have a private place to stay.

Why Theresa Emmerling chose Southwest

Great location just off the main road with only a 15 minute drive into Battle Creek or Hastings for unlimited activities, shopping and festivals. It is also centrally located between Detroit and Chicago. The lake itself is large enough to have fun on but yet small enough to not be busy or overcrowded.

What makes this house unique

Being a small, private lake offers a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Located on the east side of the lake offers longer evenings and views of the sunset. The dead end road keeps the traffic to a minimal. All sports lake offers endless water activities.

My family had a peaceful and relaxing few days at this lovely cottage on Mill Lake, which was exactly what we were seeking. There is every possible needed item provided and then some. The lake itself is exceptionally clean and calm. There are weeds a few feet out from the sandy area right off the property, but that's a sign of a healthy lake, so we weren't the least bit bothered. The minnows were plentiful and fun to watch along with our twice daily visit from the swan family who came to feed morning and evening. We saw a couple of boaters in the evening hours pulling tubes which was entertaining rather than intrusive. Just a lovely peaceful place.

The shed on the property had many fun outdoor games (darts, bean bag toss, wrap around ball thingy) plus life jackets, fishing poles, and a couple of big inner tubes. Indoor games and movies were provided as well. The perfect set up for some family time. The paddle boat was such fun, too! Though there is no WiFi provided, we brought a hotspot (At&t) and had great reception for our tablets when we wanted to use them.

The cottage itself is as everyone else has described it: a marvel of great use of space! It's also comfortable, spotlessly clean, and beautifully decorated. The vaulted ceilings and the wrap around windows with the floor to ceiling view of the lake creates a spaciousness that seems impossible in 600 square feet. The lake and outdoors feel like they are inside with you and this was part of why the relaxation factor was so high.

The beds were just as described...not huge, but comfortable enough and made perfect sense in the space. We slept well and there were tons of extra quilts and blankets if you're there in colder months. Room for air mattresses if you prefer and the clean floors made that idea just fine.

We stayed close to the cottage, but a quick read through the guest book and provided local attraction guides showed there were endless things to do in the area. Be sure to get to the Banfield General Store (5 minute drive) because they have just a bit of everything you might want. Quality deli meat, crazy good take out pizza, decent selection of wines, beers, soda, hand dipped ice cream, locally made fudge, and local history displayed.

We had a really pleasant vacation and will be back in the future! Theresa was so helpful throughout the transaction and speedy with every correspondance. Our security deposit was even refunded the same day we left! Thanks for a perfect get away!

This is the best

  • 5 of 5

We have been rented lake front vacation house for couple of years, this one is the best.

My husband and I stayed eight nights at this amazing place. Theresa really seemed to have thought of everything you could possibly need to be a very comfortable stay. Everything was great, from the modern updated house setting to the beautiful view of the lake. This is a small house but every inch of it is smartly used. We had our friends, another couple, came over stayed with us for two nights. It’s accommodated four of adults very well.

The fishing is great. We caught lots of fishes in the lake and had a great time! The raw boat and the four person paddle boat is really a plus!

Thank you Teresa and we'll come back again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was just what we were looking for. Lots of shopping and nice things to see in the area. In afternoon we set out on the porch and watched the lake, swans, geese and boaters. So relaxing. Only thing needed was a little more shade area in the afternoon as the cottage faces west and we got the full sun. We would highly recommend this cottage and hope we get to come back soon.

Vacation To Relax

  • 4 of 5

This home was beautiful and had everything in it we could need. Very relaxing few days. It was a beautiful lake and good for fishing. The paddle boat was a lot of fun. The only downside is that the water in front of the house is not set up for swimming. The owners were extremely friendly and helful!! Thanks Theresa

Owner's Response: We are in the process of improving the swimming area. The sandy shore line is regularly maintained along the waters edge. The weeds further out are currently professionally treated. Other options for weed control are also being considered.
