Located next to the ski easement to the West Wall Quad Lift with skiing access during MOST of the winter; HoogeHaus offers not only the advantages of location (the free shuttle bus picks up guests at their door in winter every 1/2 hour), but also size and aesthetic amenities such as fine art photography and a museum quality ski exhibit including the Coal Mining era ski room( beautiful long boards from Gunnison County are on display); ice skate room, Tribute to Western State College Olympians Room, Swedish immigrant skis room and the snowshoe room. Home has 5 bedrooms Plus Loft, 4 bathrooms and gourmet kitchen and is close to everything. Free shuttle stops at the driveway in winter and is a 4 minute walk in the summer. You can close off the caretaker unit and pay less if you have a smaller group. The Hooge's can give you detailed information on the area's amenities.

The 3400 square foot home features large kitchen with everything you need including spices and specialty items for a family reunion or party. There is a large main living area for gatherings with a gas log stove.

Five decks (over 1000 square feet) provide spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and privacy for guests. We have a gazebo on the deck in summer as well as umbrellas, patio furniture and many flower boxes. The large parking area provides room for up to 5 vehicles in summer and 3 in winter. Additional amenities include gas radiant heat, laundry, televisions with Netflix, VCR with a video library, cable, reading library and many games. There is one pull-out single on main floor for extra sleeping space and we have a roll-a-way bed if no one wants to use loft. If you have a group of singles, i can make the kings into single pillowtops; therefore with the pull-out single and loft, 10 people could have their own bed.

Dec 18 thru Jan 3 , Feb, March and July are high season so best to book early.

There is no better way to increase your vacation value than by combining lift tickets, rental equipment and activities with your rental as a complete package. We can assist you in building a custom package to meet your specific needs and desires while staying at Ski History Haus.

Our house was featured in December 2014 Powder Magazine, Crested Butte Magazine, International Skiing History Magazine and CB Winter 2014 Guide. I have the articles scanned if you would like me to send to you. January is a perfect time to come. If you stay a week you are basically paying for 5 days and staying for 7!

email for monthly rates for January. IMPORTANT NOTE: Because we are fair to our neighbors, we do not allow RV's, Trailers, dirt bikes, ATV's or dogs. The house rental is for the number of guests specified and is not to be used for an event party unless we discuss before you rent. We have had many family reunions here. If you have questions call us at the ski history haus.

Before we owned a home at Crested Butte Mountain, we went on ski vacations (from Ohio), so we feel that we know what will make a perfect vacation for couples, guy trips, girl trips, extended families with children and grandchildren as "we have had those trips". We love skiing, hiking, biking and relaxing. You will have a great time staying in our home! There is wifi throughout. If you want Paul to talk about the museum collections, just let us know. During the winter, Paul can give you a free 2 hour tour of the mountain so you can decide which trails are best for you.

Please note. In the winter, you can make bookings up to a day before you are coming as we move into the caretaker unit for the whole winter as we pretty much ski a lot and the caretaker unit is great for us. In the summer, if we do not have bookings by June 27, we block off the entire summer calendar and just rent our caretaker unit. So if you have interest in renting the house in the summer, please book by June 27; it is appreciated.

About Kathy Hooge 970 799 1818 cell

This is a true VRBO as we are the owners; when we rent our home, we stay in our caretaker unit that has its own entry at the rear. Most people never even know we are around, but it is good if you have questions or need assistance. We are from Ohio and both graduated from Ohio State University. Paul has a degree in art and archaeology and played varsity hockey for Ohio State and was a professor in Ohio. Kathy has a degree in education and co owned a garage door company in Ohio. In Crested Butte, Kathy worked at the bank for a while and then as office manager for many years for real estate company and 22 years for Flatiron Sports. We both skied and raced in the midwest, but always took vacations in the West so it was an easy choice to move here. If you have questions, we know the area and can help you with your skiing or hiking/biking questions. If you want a 'tour of the ski mountain' your 1st or 2nd day here, Paul will include that for a few hours for free so that you feel comfortable with the mountain. Paul and Kathy both Alpine and Nordic ski in winter and hike in summer. Because we have lived here for 24 years, we can offer ideas on Fishing, other summer activities as well as all winter activities.

Why Kathy Hooge 970 799 1818 cell chose Crested Butte Area

Because the house was designed with renting in mind, you can rent as a 5 bedrm + loft/4 bath that sleeps 14 comfortably for as low as $499/night in January. In the summer we usually rent the house as a 4 bedrm/3 bath with loft option (sleeps 10) as we tend to have smaller groups in the summer, but the 5/4 + loft is always available.

We were looking for ski-in or close property and found it for a very reasonable price in 1993. In 1992 when we first stopped in Crested Butte, we were in awe of the huge surrounding mountain peaks and open vistas. It did take us 5 years to build the house and we have upgraded and made improvements every year. Because we lived in the Midwest and always took ski vacations in Colorado or Utah, we feel we know what makes your vacation enjoyable. There are pillowtop beds with high quality linens even in the loft! The diverse library suits everyone's taste in case there is a part of a day when you just want to relax and hang-out in the house. The kitchen if fully equipped with a large roaster, pots & pans of all types and 2 crockpots, all spices and natural gas stainless grill on deck. The house is close to everything (the slopes, the sledding hill, the biking and hiking trails) and it is 2.5 miles from town. The FREE SHUTTLE stops at our driveway in winter and it is a 4 minute walk in the summer to one of the bus stops. January, April, May, October and November are the most reasonable months to rent and Crested Butte has become a year round resort.

THANKSGIVING and JANUARY are BARGAINS- Check out the prices.

Our place is decorated in antique skis, snowshoes and ice skates with varied art collections related to winter. Although there are antiques around, everything is well fastened so you don't have to worry about children. We have high chair, booster chair and port a crib. We have young grandchildren and they love coming here winter and summer as it is fun on the property as well as the playgrounds in town. How often can you say you spent a "night in the museum"? Many of the bicycle trails are within 5 minutes of the house. The ski easement to the West Wall Quad lift if next door to our property. The free summer concerts on the mountain on wednesdays are easy to walk to.

Great Crested Butte experience!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights there, and all agreed we should come back next year....and hopefully our wives will join us. Space enough for 5 couples, really comfortable and clean, and the museum artifacts on all the walls were really interesting-not your normal ski condo..... Great kitchen setup (felt like a big family kitchen....)and comfortable beds. The hosts were super friendly and helpful......great crested butte attitude! Hopefully we will be back!

Epic Days at the Butte

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay if you are considering visiting Crested Butte. Kathy and her husband Paul are great hosts. We even arrived to a fresh baked loaf of banana bread which was the best. The place is full of ski artifacts and memorabila which adds to the character and uniqueness of the place. There is easy access to slopes and the home is much larger on the inside than it looks. We had seven guys on our trip and everyone fit comfortably. Thanks again Kathy and Paul for a great stay! Until next time...

A lodging experience like no other

  • 5 of 5

Our ski group of 7 men have stayed in lots of rental houses over the years but I have to say this was the most unique and enjoyable. The pictures and descriptions do not lie, this house is filled with ski history and memorabilia. On top of that, you have comfortable, spacious bedrooms, a kitchen with every dish and utensil imaginable, ands lots of space to eat and just relax. Oh, and have I mentioned Paul and Kathy?! Kathy was very responsive during the booking process and beyond, even sending us a weather update the day of our arrival! And Paul gave us a personalized tour of the house and described the history of the extensive collection and it's significance. Paul even went out and skied with us the first morning to familiarize us with Crested Butte. We all agreed that this was a place like no other and the stay of a lifetime. Thanks Kathy and Paul!

Beautiful home at Mt Crested Butte!

  • 5 of 5

I am always apprehensive when I book a home sight unseen. Well...the Hooge Haus is a gorgeous, comfortable, well-appointed, excellent location vacation home. It is full of antique skis, old ski photos and family pictures. We have returned several times and will continue to return since it feels like a home away from home. There is plenty of space for people to have their own space or all hang out in the large family room/kitchen. The kitchen was very well appointed with plenty of dishes, glasses, pots, pans, crockpots, gadgets, etc. Additionally, they leave some of the basic cooking items (oil, salt, pepper, sugar, flour, tea, coffee, etc) which is really helpful when you are on vacation. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the bathrooms are all updated...with great showers! The home is very warm. One year we rented the house and the two apartments with 15 of us...we had the best time! The ski bus stops at the front door and runs every half hour, so the kids can come and go as they please. It is also possible to ski to the West Wall and walk a short way back to the house. Paul and Kathy are wonderful hosts and were extremely helpful when the battery on our car died the day we were leaving. Book early because it is a popular vacation home both winter and summer! It isn't just a rental....it is a home and it is lovely!

Excellent accommodations at the Hooge Haus

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Hooge Haus, Mt Crested butte is perfect for a winter vacation. We stayed in March 2016 and we could almost ski back to the door. There is a path up to the West Wall Quad lift and takes about 5 minutes to walk or you can take the free bus that stops every 1/2 hour to the base area. At the base area the buses leave for town every 15 minutes. It was so easy!

Some of us flew in and some drove. The airport in Gunnison has a (pay) shuttle that dropped people right at the house. All of the beds were comfortable and had down comforters. Obviously our host cooks as the kitchen had everything! The children built snowmen in the front. The owner skied with us the first day to acquaint us with the mountain so then we knew where we could ski. it was great!. I highly recommend this home for a ski vacation in Crested Butte.

great relaxing stay and fantstic mountain views!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house at 18 Castle Rd Mt Crested Butte because it would be close to wedding park on the mountain and the big hotels where the rest of the guests would be staying. We wanted someplace that would have everything we needed for our wedding immediate family. The house was clean and had everything we needed, incredibly comfortable beds, toys and books for the 2 children, huge kitchen area with every amenity you could imagine (3 different coffee pots), spices and plenty of seating. The deck had a screened gazebo which was perfect for small groups during the day to gather and flower boxes and hanging baskets which were perfect for backdrop of pictures..we could watch the sun come up from east decks and watch the beautiful sunsets from the west decks.

There were 12 of us and plenty of room and private spaces. We will definitely return to this house in the future
