Neihart is located on Highway 89, a scenic highway connecting Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park, known as the Kings Hill Scenic Byway.
Neihart was named for James L. Neihart, one of a group of prospectors who first discovered minerals in this part of the mountains. The discovery of silver-lead ore came in 1881 and proved to be one of the richest in the Little Belts. The igneous rock in which the ore is found is called pinto diorite because of its red and green spotted appearance. Sapphire mining proved profitable here, and it is estimated that more than $3 million worth of sapphires ranging in color from pale to royal blue were taken from these mines.
A town meeting was held in 1882 and the chairman, sitting on a rock, suggested the name of Farragut for the town. No one seconded the motion, but the next suggestion of Neihart was made and accepted. Main Street was laid out to be eighty feet wide and all cross streets sixty feet.(from Cheney's Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company)
This historic mining town is right in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains. Try out the local creeks for some excellent trout fishing, and take the 10-mile drive north of nearby Monarch to Sluice Boxes State Park where hiking, biking, hunting and wildlife viewing are popular. Neihart also boasts excellent creek fishing and recreation opportunities. Be sure to visit Memorial Falls and take the nature trail which is handicapped accessible.
For winter recreation, snowmobiling, cross-country and downhill skiing visit the Showdown Ski Area, nestled high in the Little Belt Mountains located 25 miles north of White Sulphur Springs near Neihart. There is 1,400 vertical feet of forest-lined trails, open slopes and glades for skiers of every ability.

Perfect place for a Showdown getaway. All the amenities and comforts you need plus more!! Very cozy.
Great Cozy Place!
This is a cool cabin to stay at!
This cabin was a great find! Our three kids had a blast here, as a matter of fact, they didn't want to leave to go skiing. There is a smart TV in every room and the floor plan is a maze. As a matter of fact, we didn't even know there was a man cave until we were leaving. The cabin felt as though we were just staying at a friends or family members place for a few days. It was well equipped with everything we needed. Truly a great Christmas wonderland!
Perfect for us!
The house was very clean and comfortable. The deck area was beautiful! There were 6 of us in our group, but still room for more. We'll definitely be back.
Cozy, comfortable weekend in Neihart
We had a very enjoyable stay while skiing at nearby Showdown. The property was quaint and cozy, with a wood stove, and accommodated our group of seven comfortably. The location, just 10 miles from Showdown, and right across the street from Bob' Bar and Grill and the Inconvenience Store was wonderful. Would definitely stay here again.
Family friendly cabin!
This was a great experience for my family and I. We were impressed from the start. The owner called within an hour of requesting a stay at the cabin to give us more details. His excitement for the property and the town reassured us that we made a great choice for our vacation. The day of the trip, he went out of his way to text me about a community bbq that we could attend. When we arrived in Neihart, all the locals were also very friendly and welcoming. We were surprised when we got into the cabin. It looked much nicer than we had expected. The website does not do it justice. The owners spent a lot of time decorating to make it feel rustic and home-like. We were also shocked to see it was already stocked up with all the daily items you need like soaps, cooking supplies, and cleaning products. I packed all of this stuff for us anyway but it may be nice if you forgot something( not to mention they use environmentally safe products:). They had EVERYTHING you may need there. It was perfect for my 2 year old son. He enjoyed all the toys they had available and had room to run. My husband and I liked how close we were to fishing spots and to a beautiful waterfall. We will definitely come back but next time we will rent it for a full week. If you love being in the forest and are looking for a quiet vacation spot we highly recommend this cabin!
