About Michelle Kriss

I'm a retired naval officer and licensed engineer with a passion for taking something ugly and making it beautiful. The pic above shows my husband and me before a Tough Mudder. Sums us up, 'go big or go home.'

Michelle Kriss purchased this house in 2014

Why Michelle Kriss chose Emporia

Blame it on HGTV Rehab Addict - I became interested in older homes. After toying with the idea for a while and looking at many homes, I found this one. From the pictures it looked like it had awesome potential. Touring it, I found those treasures I was looking for; original, unpainted moldings, pocket doors, french doors, stamped plaster, hardwood floors. Where others saw filth and smelled pets, I saw potential. My husband, daughter and I spent four months making this something we are proud of and would live in ourselves.

What makes this house unique

Main floor boasts brand new kitchen, spacious dining room, living room and foyer. Perfect for a big family get together or small reception. Within walking distance of Emporia Main Street events, shops, restaurants and Emporia State University. Folding tables and chairs for gatherings available upon request

Guestbook comments from the owner

Will and Adeline Wayman were our great-grandparents. Their daughter, Pearl, was our grandmother. She was married in the Wayman house in 1915. We have a picture of her wedding day standing on the front staircase. We always wondered where this picture was taken. When we discovered this home was to be used as a "hotel" we saw the pictures on line and there was grandma Pearl's staircase! We were so excited.

The owners graciously gave us a tour of the home, where Will's grandsons (one of them our father) came to play as a young boys. Our dad told us that he remembers Will sitting on the front porch after a hard days work.

Walking through the halls of this home we could feel the spirit of our great-grandparents, our grandmother and our father. We could imagine them in the living room by the fire, the parlor visiting with friends and we wondered which of the cold bedrooms upstairs was grandmas.

It was fun to imagine our dad and his brothers (Will's grandsons) running a short two blocks from their house at 705 Union St to see their grandparents.

Our brother, Stephen William F, who passed in 19864 was named after Will Wayman.

Thank you so much for saving the Wayman home! It means more than you will ever know.

Love the Wayman House

  • 5 of 5

The Wayman house is perfect for my group's quick trip to Emporia for Lunar Kanza. It's spacious enough for a larger group and the water stays hot during multiple showers. The home is furnished very nicely and is very comfortable. We love staying at the Wayman House when we are in town!

Home away from home!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We visit family in friends in Emporia 1-2 times per year and have always stayed in a hotel, but since we were bringing a large group, for Emporia High School's graduation this time, we found the Wayman House on VRBO and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. It is a beautiful old home that is full of history and has been restored with modern amenities. It is so tastefully decorated, simple and practical. The kitchen had everything we needed and then some. The linens and towels were very nice and there were plenty to go around. Plenty of hot water even after several baths. My family loved being together in the living and dining room but also loved they each had their own space to retreat to. We were so comfortable it truly was a home away from home. Michelle was quick to answer the few questions I did have. If I ever bring a large group to Emporia again we will definitely stay at the Wayman House.

An enjoyable stay but....

  • 3 of 5

...this might not be a place for:

1) older folks, as well as younger ones, who might have eye sight issues as the stairway from the main floor to the second level is very dark and blends in with the upper and lower floors. It caused 2 of our younger family (barely 20 years old) to fall during the night. Even during the day, ambient light was not really sufficient to adequately light the steps. It would be very easy to resolve this problem with motion detector battery operated lights which I use in my own home. There is also another stairway to a 3rd floor "dormer" which has 5 beds. That passageway is very narrow with no railing and quite steep to say the least. It is definitely only for the young at heart to maneuver. Again it was quite dark and could use some auxiliary lighting.

2) families who might not appreciate eclectic furniture, some of which was quite fragile. One of our young family members sat on a chair, simply to tie his shoe, and the chair collapsed underneath him.

3) light sleepers. There are railroad tracks less than 5 blocks away from the house and without exaggeration, there is a train rolling down the tracks at least 2 times an hour, more like every 20 minutes or so.....24/7. They have to blare their horns at every street crossing which makes it almost continuous.

4) families with members who want to have a lot of privacy and access to bathroom facilities as there are only 2 showers in a house that will accommodate well over a dozen people.

Overall our stay was pleasant and gave our family a chance to be together during our anniversary celebration. The price was certainly right as it would have cost much more to house our group in separate hotel rooms. The HVAC was certainly adequate and all said they were quite comfortable during the night.

Owner's Response: Our vision was that the Wayman House be a comfortable place for families and friends to gather. We were so excited to host Chuck and his wife after moving from Emporia to Florida for retirement! They indicated that they were gathering their children and grandchildren to celebrate 50 years of matrimony. On an anniversary planning visit, Chuck and his wife insisted on visiting the Wayman house BEFORE ever agreeing to rent it. Therefore, they had prior, firsthand knowledge of the stairwells, the furniture and the shower/bath arrangement. The chair in question was, apparently, damaged by a previous guest and has since been removed. As for the trains, given that Chuck and his wife lived in Emporia for 30 years, they should be fully aware of them.

great house but misleading

  • 3 of 5

6 of the beds are in one room which is the third story atttic. saying this place sleeps fifteen is a lie. we liked the house but my friends said they would never stay again. one friend could not stand up fully in the attic without knocking his head. in reality there are 4 bedrooms plus this atttic space. should be advertised as a four bedroom plus an attic for kids. do not book this house for more than 4 coupqles sleeping together plus kids. i liked my stay but thats because i did not have to sleep in the attic!

Owner's Response: I simply do not understand the 3* rating as the tenant sent me this message after his arrival: "Thank you. We have arrived. It is very lovely. Beyond our expectations." Additionally, this guest had 9 MEN in his party so he had to draw the conclusion that if the house said 5 (or even 4) bedrooms that some of the beds were in the same room, even if he never looked at the pictures. ---------------------------- There has never been a deceitful intent regarding this accommodation. (We have researched other places that boasted sleeping 15 but looking at pics and reading the descriptions, it was on evident that THOSE owners intended some to sleep on AIR MATTRESSES.) All 15 people could sleep in actual beds at the Wayman House. The attic has FIVE beds, not 6 and the pictures show that they are adjacent to each other. This is the description on the first page of the VRBO/Homeaway ad and has been there since DAY 1: * The upstairs boasts 3 spacious bedrooms (1KG, 2QN beds), 2 full baths and a utility/bedroom (1FULL). * Bonus space (bedroom) is a 400+ SF finished dormer attic that offers an additional (5TWIN beds). Pack and play on site. This is on the "amenities" page. VRBO/homeaway does not offer an "attic" option in their " dropdown menu . 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 15 Bed/utility room - 1 double , 2nd floor Living room - 1 sleep sofa /futon , Full Sized - Main floor Wizard of Oz Suite - 1 king , 2nd floor - en suite bathroom, TV Dirty Kanza Suite - 1 queen , 2nd floor, TV Attic/Dormer - 5 twin/ single Veteran's Day Suite - 1 queen , Queen/2nd floor, TV
