About Lynn Danaher and Ryan Bennett

Acanthus Suites is owned and operated by Mother and Son Team; Lynn Danaher and Ryan Bennett. Both arrived from Alaska to Friday Harbor in May of 1994 and worked together to create San Juan Excursions, offering both whale watching and sea kayak tours. Sold in 2000. Lynn started to expand into repurposing under-utilized commercial properties in downtown Friday Harbor, with a primary focus on historic restoration. Ryan traveled extensively for several years working in the snowboard and skiing industry. He returned to Friday Harbor in 2008 to assist his Mother, Lynn to co-manage the family business. They have expanded to own 4 historic homes along Argyle Ave. which are used as vacation rentals and commercial offices.

Lynn Danaher and Ryan Bennett purchased this bungalow in 2014

Why Lynn Danaher and Ryan Bennett chose San Juan Island

This was an underutilized commercial property in a great location. It was beautifully restored and needed some creative thought as to how to best apply it's attributes to our visitor industry.

What makes this bungalow unique

Classic craftsman style, very well preserved, lots of square footage guaranteeing spacious suites, that are both convenient to downtown friday harbor and all the activities available on san juan island. A true gem!!

Pleasant stay in Friday Harbor

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed 3 night in the Miner Suite of acanthus Suites. The suites are located in a convenient area of Friday Harbor. It was an easy walk to the ferry, restaurants and shopping at the harbor. The suite itself was large enough as to not feel closed in, and the skylights provided plenty of natural light. Washington was having an unusual heat wave during our stay, so A/C would have been welcome. But, the suite cooled off sufficiently at night with the provided fan to enable us to sleep comfortably at night. We would recommend this property to other. Oh, by the way, Lynn was very pleasant when I had to contact her with questions that she had previously answered.

  • 4 of 5

Pretty good price with spacious double queen size beds for 4 people. But the kitchen and bathroom could be better.

Perfect place for staying on the island

  • 5 of 5

This place was great - the room is fresh, very clean, and large. It's only a couple blocks from the ferry terminal so it's easy for people staying who won't have a car on the island (we didn't have a car). There's a bike rental place just a few houses down the road too, which is really convenient. The annex, if available, offers even more sleeping space. The owners were very responsive and friendly. I would definitely stay here again!

To much money

  • 1 of 5

This room is just a room with a kitchen and small bathroom. I think the owner/s could put more effort into this room. The toilet leaked at the floor, which happened a week before we arrived. The sheets were not the cleanest and had to be switched out. The location is right downtown so everything is walkable which is nice. If they updated and put some money into this wonderful old home it could be real nice. Too much money for the room.

Perfect for friends or a family

  • 5 of 5

We were in the Miner's Suite, which is on the top floor (just one flight of stairs) and is an open room with two queen beds, a kitchenette, and an en suite bath. It was perfect for us as friends who are happy to share space but want separate beds.

This is a guest house, not a B&B, so it's great for people who want to come and go independently. The code locks on the doors are awesome because they eliminate the constraints of scheduled check-in and key retrieval from the owner.

Lynn made our reservation easy and was very friendly on the phone with helpful recommendations about the island and some good laughs. She and Ryan share their cell phone numbers so we could call anytime we needed help, but everything was so well prepared and provided, we never needed their help.

Everything was spotlessly clean. The yellow paint, wood cabinets, and beautiful antique table of the Miner's Suite made it very welcoming. We really felt at home and would go back in a heartbeat.

Friday Harbor is a small town and historic seaport with a fascinating history. There are many shops for great shopping, plus several very good cafes and restaurants to choose from. A walk around town is a pleasure, everyone is friendly and helpful. Visit the whale museum and the historical museum, plus take the walking tour of the town, we take great pride in our continuing preservation efforts of many of the original buildings. San juan island is the best area to actually see orca whales in the wild easily during the summer months. Fall and spring it is a birders paradise with many species passing through en route to their winter home or summer breeding grounds. Many birds reside here in the winter, most beautiful are the trumpeter swans and the great blue heron, plus the largest population of bald eagles outside of alaska, reside in the san juan islands. We have 3 national parks on our small beautiful island so there are a lot of opportunities for hiking on the well marked trails.

There is a bus system to the other side of the island, bikes, electric bikes, mopeds and cars to rent. Plus many of the whale watch vessels and kayak operators depart from right from the port of friday harbor only 3 blocks away. Our island has so much to offer!! We have year around resident orca whales to see, wonderful kayaking along our shores, the largest number of nesting bald eagle in the continental usa, 2 large national parks with numerous hiking trails
