This Classic Cracker house - Wabi Sabi Cottage - was built in 1919 and completely and lovingly restored in 2004. I changed the exterior as little as possible but once you step inside no detail has been overlooked. I added central air conditioning, used reproduction lighting, outfitted the kitchen and bath with modern conveniences - all while keeping the cottage charm.
It is so special that Budget Travel magazine featured Wabi Sabi Cottage in their September 2011 issue of Top 10 Coolest towns in America and Cedar Key was number 8.
Vintage photos and a mix of antiques with new furnishings and some modern art complete the décor. There is off-street parking with room for a boat trailer and a fenced yard for your pooch to run around. It is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway or maybe just a solo hideaway? Oh heck, you can bring the kids, too. If you need to work, there is a desk area and Wi-Fi Internet service. I hope you will love the quiet, privacy, and charm as much as I, my friends and family do.
Historic Cedar Key is a nature lover's and artist's dream. It is one of the few remaining fishing villages (think mullet, redfish, grouper and trout) left in Florida. Oysters, crabs, stone crabs and farm-raised clams still being harvested the old-fashioned way - by hand.
We have several wonderful restaurants, fun shops, art galleries, (some) night life, two museums, a fishing pier, city park with swim beach and a library plus more.
Nearby are outer islands with historic ruins to explore, as well as Manatee Springs and the Lower Suwanee Wildlife Refuge. Within an hour's drive you can go to Gainesville, Micanopy and more.
We have two festivals a year - the Art's Festival in the Spring and the Seafood Festival in the Fall. You can also rent kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, boats, fishing guides, bikes or golf carts to get around but do not forget to bring a camera, that book you have been meaning to read and your fishing pole. You are in for a wonderful and relaxing time.
Only one hour from Gainesville, two hours from Tampa, and three from Orlando, Jacksonville, or Tallahassee airports.

My background is in design and I love the historic and natural beauty of Cedar Key and really appreciate the visitors who feel the same way. Yep, that's me in the photo plus Frenchie, the Wonder Dog.
Ada Lang purchased this cottage in 2003
Wabi Sabi because it was on 2 lots and there were people who wanted to buy it, tear it down and build a couple stilt houses. The decision to purchase was easy, as well as to restore and share it with guests who come to Cedar Key and want to stay in a one-of-a-kind historic property. The cottage was one of several that were built for the fiber factory workers and there is still a remnant of another building's foundation out in the yard.
When I travel, I prefer to stay in historic or funky and unique homes. When I out-fitted Wabi Sabi, I decided that if it was something I would want or need on vacation, it was going in. I think that my guests appreciate the attention to detail and extra amenities. Really, just about all you need to bring is your clothes and toiletry bag!
Ada - We will return! This cottage is so cute. Love all the lttle touches you have added.....no attention to detail was overlooked. Thank you!
What a delicious surprise. Its a hidden gem right in the middle of town. We passed by it twice before we found it. The foliage and the natural yard and the huge tree (adorned with fairy lights) are awesome. Little turtles often came to visit. The fenced in yard is great for doggies....plus it appears that it also keep the many local feral cats out!!!Privacy abounds, yet we loved being able to walk a few blocks to eat and have a brew or 2!! The dogs loved walking along the water ways....and through the enchanting neighborhoods. The inside of the cottage is rustic with updated amenities and many delightful touches. ( Loved the hanging shutter divider in the family room.)The cottage reminded me of my aunts much loved cottage on the river up North. The porch swing is perfect for reading a book and sipping a G+T. We plan to return when the weather turns cooler in the fall.........it was in the high nineties while we were there, but that was the temp at home as well. Thoroughly loved our vacation!!! Thanks for sharing your beautiful cottage.
We're old house, old Florida lovers and Wabi Sabi cottage was exactly what we expected!! Cedar Key is peaceful and relaxing in May and the weather was perfect. The cottage has everything we needed and was a quick walk to downtown and the waterfront. Lovely cottage!!!!!
There is so much wonderful about this place that it's hard to know where to begin. The cottage is meticulous in its charm and appointments. For a small cottage, it felt grand with everything it includes and cozy at the same time with the porch swing, the old iron gate and the fairy lights around the porch and grand old oak. The bedroom feels like tree house!
The location is wonderful too. We had been told to rent a golf cart, but didn't get one in time. No worries! It's a quick, easy walk to just about everything. We wandered all over Dock Street, down town, along the shore and even did parts of the historical walking tour. Everyone we encountered was friendly and neighborly.
That applies to Ada too. She's a wonderful hostess! We'll definitely be back again!
The Wabi Sabi Cottage is charmingly restored and appointed to showcase the history of Cedar Key and the natural beauty of Florida. This was a soothing place to relax away from the frantic pace of life. We greatly enjoyed our mid-week stay and being able to walk everywhere! Ada was very friendly and even accomodated our cat who was so happy to join us on vacation. We highly recommend Wabi Sabi Cottage as the best place to stay on your next visit to quiet, restful Cedar Key.
What an incredibly wonderful place to rest, rejuvenate & restore the heart & soul! Quiet, romantic with everything at finger's reach. Enjoyed walks to the water and through the main street, many candlelit meals on the porch and glasses of wine on the bench swing. Peaceful and lovely. Thanks!
This was a very nice quiet spot to visit. We brought our Yamaha Rhino; that was a blessing! We never drove our suburban anywhere the whole weekend. It was great! I'm an antique collector and Wabi Sabi has it's fair share of them. It really felt like a home away from home. Thank you Ada!
