Overview

About the property

2 Buildings, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms With 300 Feet Of Waterfront.

Welcome to one of Madeline Island’s newer and unique properties great for medium to large groups (sleeps up to 23 in beds).

This property sits on over 5 acres with 300 feet of waterfront. It faces western sunsets and is surrounded by beautiful forest. There are two buildings: a lodge and a guest cabin. Bud’s Oasis (a fun local bar) is located at the entrance of the driveway. The property is within walking, biking or running distance to La Pointe where there are restaurants, bars, shops, a library, a public sand beach, the ferry docks and a golf course. People can purchase a daily or weekly pool and hot tub pass from the Inn on Madeline Island (which is located next to the marina).

Main Building:

The main lodge was finished in 2014. It is a light filled, lofty open space with a pine ceiling and cedar trim. It boasts a gourmet kitchen with a Décor stove, commercial sized fridge/freezer and two dining areas. Twelve-foot tall windows allowing for incredible views of the trees and lake surround the sunken living room area. In the same room: games and books line the shelves and a play area for children is great for keeping an eye on the little ones. A large loft is complete with a ping pong/air hockey table and comfortable seating for TV viewing. The TV also has Blue Ray, a DVD player and DirecTV. The loft has a queen sized futon.

There are three bedrooms plus a sleeping area in the loft. Two are master bedrooms each with a king sized bed. One has a pull out love seat (full sized) and the other has a queen/double bunk bed. The third bedroom has a queen – this bedroom is another upstairs area - with a twin bed. The TV loft has a queen futon. There are two full bathrooms and one half bath. One of the bathrooms has a tub; both have showers.

Two west-facing decks face the lake; both of them are off the master bedrooms. One is large and covered while the other is smaller and more intimate. There is a combination charcoal and gas grill outside the front door.

There is also a washer and dryer in a utility room which also has a small tub for cleaning animals or muddy, happy children.

Guest Cabin:

The guest cabin was finished in 2002. The guest cabin is a cozy, two-level and timber-framed house with a sauna. It has a kitchenette with a Wolf stove, a small refrigerator and convection oven. There is a TV with Blue Ray, a DVD player and DirecTV. A deck off the upstairs living/kitchen area faces the lake. There are two bedrooms. One with a queen size bed and twin bunks and the other with a double bed bunk bed with a single trundle bed pull out. A queen sofa bed is in the living area/kitchenette. There is a full bath with a walk-in shower next to the sauna while the other half bath is upstairs.

There are stairways leading to a 78 foot long crib dock with a 50 foot L added to it which adds over 1000 square feet outdoor area. There is a small beach on either side with mixed sand and rock bottom.

This is an incredible retreat for large or small groups. Plan a family reunion or a get-away with friends. This could be a perfect place for a weekend seminar or workshop as well. Watch the sunsets while sitting under the canopy of pine trees. Listen to the birds all day and the frogs and owls during the night. There is a local bald eagle with a nearby nest. In the winter, there is a mating coyote pair who like to hunt on the ice between the island and the mainland. We also have a local ermine family who are incredibly adorable but very shy and fast. Swim, canoe or kayak in crystal clear water in summer or snowshoe, cross-country ski or snow mobile in the winter.

Some Rules:

You must remove and and all garbage and recycling when you leave. You can either take it in the cars or there is a trash/recycling center on the island. We will ask for a $250 downpayment from you - if all the garbage and recycling is taken with you; you will receive the downpayment back. We have had too many problems with garbage overflow and the large, hungry raccoons on the island.

Dogs are allowed with a one-time $50 charge for each dog. They are not allowed on any furniture and please trim their nails before coming. When you leave the cabin for an outing: bring the dog along, kennel or tie them up outside. Also clean up after the dog!

You will need to bring all your own food, beverages, condiments and spices. Beach towels are not available so please bring your own. Bathroom towels cannot be used as beach towels or for wiping dirty animals clean.

At the end of your stay, please strip the beds and start a load of laundry in the washer. If possible, do as many loads as you can since there are many sheets and towels.

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

Perfect home for our family. The guest cabin allowed everyone to have their own sleeping area. Large home for a family get together with guest cabin was wonderful for a long weekend. We were able to cook great meals and enjoy family time inside and outside.

Wonderful family reunion at Sunset bay lodge!!

  • 5 of 5

Every year my family has a family reunion on Madeline Island over the 4th of July. We have rented different condo units over the years, usually with all of us spread out at different locations. This year we were lucky enough to rent the Sunset bay lodge for our group and had the best reunion yet. The location is ideal, being close to town but just far enough away for peace and quiet. The lodge and guest house are beautiful and very accommodating. The fire pit is perfect and was utilized every night, and the dock is spectacular. We set up bag toss and shuffleboard on the beautiful dock, watched sunsets every night from there and swam off the dock during the day. Thank you Laura and Timothy for sharing your beautiful place with us. We will be back!! Monica

Wonderful Island getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our group had an amazing long weekend at Sunset Bay Lodge. Our group contained 4 different families and kids from age 4 through teenagers. There was plenty of space and things to do for everyone. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked with everything we needed and it was great to actually have enough seating for everyone to sit and eat at one time. We loved the firepit and the dock. One family brought a boat and safely left it docked there the whole weekend. The sauna was a fun treat. Our group has come to Madeline Island before but always stayed on the mainland and come over for the day. Staying on the island at this beautiful property was so much better. We got to enjoy the cool mornings, gorgeous sunsets and explore so much more of the island. I would highly recommend this place for any large groups looking to stay on Madeline Island! We hope to be back next year!

Beautiful Fall Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our fall getaway at Sunset Bay Lodge with close friends. The children made numerous air hockey tournament brackets and enjoyed playing against each other. After the dads said they were going to do a polar swim in Lake Superior, some of the children accepted the challenge and jumped into the lake off the huge dock! A trip to the sauna warmed all the swimmers up. We enjoyed the fire pit as families especially while the kids played in the woods and creatively built forts together.

Every inch of the gorgeous house and guest house were used to the fullest! One of the best times of the day was seeing all the children together eating at the enormous kitchen table. The large kitchen accommodated our big crew well.

Everyone loved our time there together.....we hope to visit together again!

Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of cousins had a great time here. The house and guest house were perfect for our particular needs, and made for a perfect get-away so that we could bond with quality family time, instead of just seeing each other during weddings and funerals...

The house was clean, bright, comfortable and airy. The fire pit was nice, the large dining room table was perfect for games, and the kitchen met all of our meal needs. The beds were comfortable and we all slept well.

I would recommend this home for large family gatherings.
