1500 sq. feet of loft and apartment space with harbour view in Trinity Bay, NL
Harbour Couture is a redesigned general store nestled in the heart of Southport, Trinity Bay. Described as a 'New York loft' it is at once traditional and sophisticated. The 800 square foot main floor living area has six large windows facing south. There are two bedrooms, a bathroom and dining table on this level. A beautifully decorated lower level apartment has everything you need for comfort and convenience: master bedroom, bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The sitting room on this level has a comfy sofabed.
Southport is a fishing harbour where crab, caplein, lobster, herring, and cod are landed during the summer season. Guests can explore the shoreline, visit the wharves and chat with local fishermen. Or walk five minutes to the end of the community and it is pure ocean, cliffs and sky!
Take Pap's Path up to Jack Baker's Hill - the views of the bay are stunning! Swim in the pristine Lambert's Pond just 5 minute walk from the shop.
Collect driftwood at Heart's Ease Beach for a boil-up or keep treasures.
Note to Kayakers: enjoy this bay with islands, coves, caves and beaches. The 4-hour round trip from Harbour Couture down to Wester' Head, up through the tickle, past Gooseberry Cove, up Ganney Cove Arm to the Rattle, portage across at Little Heart's Ease Neck to Squidholes and the waters of Southwest Arm...this is for the experienced!
Lots to do picking berries, whale watching, icebergs in season can often be seen. You can fish off the wharves and cook-up on Back Beach.
In nearby Gooseberry Cove, Trina's One Stop Shop has very good selection of basic groceries, including beer. Bring specialty items with you or travel 40 minutes to Clarenville for supermarket shopping.
Southport is centrally located for day trips to the Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas which provide world class hiking trails, museums, restaurants as well as ferries to remote communities.

About peggy hogan
I moved from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland 35 years ago and fell in love with the place, its landscape and its people. I worked as a costume designer in the capitol city St. John's for most of that time. Since moving to Southport I've become part of the community and feel very settled here with my partner. We enjoy summer and winter outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, snow shoeing and ice skating. We recently moved to nearby Gooseberry Cove where I enjoy gardening. Travel is a passion for me: to Morocco in the mid 70's, across Canada by train in 1980, to Spain, England, Cuba, Mexico and New York. I love travelling in Newfoundland and labrador and hope to do more of that too! For now I want to be a great host to guests at Harbour Couture.
peggy hogan purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2005
Why peggy hogan chose Southport
I bought the community store in Southport in 2005. It had been closed for 3 years. I made it my home and used the space for the creation of theatre costumes and a line of clothing under the label Harbour Couture. There are still period costumes and hats in the studio from my collection. My husband and I love it and want to share it with guests from this province and from across the world. Southport is centrally located for day trips to the Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas which provide world class hiking trails, museums, restaurants as well as ferries to remote communities.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Harbour Couture is in the centre of the community and very much apart of activity here. The building is located next to the water, where guests can launch kayaks and explore the harbour and the shoreline of the beautiful Trinity Bay - the views are stunning! And the area is great for hiking, swimming, beach combing and for visiting the wharves and chatting with local fishermen. For hikers, this is a joy with the old paths, the barrens, and trails along the cliffs. In nearby Gooseberry, Karen's Convenience has good selection of basic groceries. Bring specialty items with you or travel 45 minutes to Clarenville for supermarket shopping. Please contact me for more information on food shopping in our area.

Peggy's place is beautifully unique in a great location to explore Trinity Bay.
We loved everything about Harbour Couture! We just wish we had more time to enjoy the home and follow all the trails on the Peggy's map. Thank you!
Newfoundland at its best.
What a wonderful, quirky place Harbour Couture is! The apt exceeded all our expectations, which was difficul as they were based on all the positive reviews we read before booking. The upstairs holds a treasure trove of eclectic memorabilia, huge windows that overlook the bay, and the craft table kept our kids busy every evening as they fashioned art of their own from the beach treasures they found.
The lower apt and kitchen is well equipped with everything we needed to cook for the family. There were more than enough couches to flake out and read, or just relax. Beds comfy too. I also appreciated the CDs of local musicians which were also available.
Walks to Little Hearts Ease beach and Blow Me Down Hill were as described. Fantastic.
Peggy was a gracious host, and we were grateful for the welcoming treat, hand drawn maps, and info booklet.....etc etc. She seemed genuinely interested in our well-being and took time to get to know us. Above and beyond.
Finally, the people of Southport were friendly and welcoming - eager to show off their town and its history. We were invited fishing (an offer we accepted), caught a bucketful of cod, which was cleaned and filetted for us and made for a great final meal. It was also wicked to watch the commercial fishing boats in action bringing in their hauls of Capelin.
Honestly, I don't this this review is effusive enough, but it'll have to do. I really want to recommend this rental to everyone, and tell all my friends, but it was so good, I have to admit, I would like the place to remain a secret, you know?
Thank you Peggy for offering up Harbour Couture for rental! We hope to be back one day!
Locals were so friendly. Beautiful area. It was an awesome trip.
We aim to return
This "outport loft" in the middle of a small but active fishing community is ideal for a family with children. Between the restored shop upstairs and the comfortable, well-equipped apartment downstairs, the visitor only needs to stock in a few groceries to have everything required for a week or two of carefree relaxation. The hiking trails nearby are spectacular, providing grand views of Trinity Bay and Random Island. Peggy and Viv offer a warm welcome, and if the visitor is lucky, the hosts might come round bearing bread or berries or wine. It's hard to beat all of that.
The real Newfoundland!
We loved our time at Harbour Couture. The accommodations were so unique and interesting and had everything we needed. Peggy was a great host, and we loved meeting the locals and feeling like we were in "real" Newfoundland. We loved our whole trip, but this was our favourite spot. Everyone was so friendly and made us feel so welcome. I would definitely recommend checking out this unique experience while you're in the area!
Amazing Second visit to Southport!
This was my families second visit to Harbour Couture and once again it exceeded our expectations. Peggy is wonderful and her little gem in Southport is incredible. We were welcome with an amazing soda bread and jam which we devoured. The home is situated on the corner of a quiet and peaceful road with the water at your door. My girls spent their days fishing (Peggy has fishing rods to use) and just enjoying the outdoors. And on rainy days or just some down time they spent their time going through Peggy's stash of crafts. They loved her place! We all did. We went on a couple of hikes which Peggy details in her beautiful and fun hand drawn maps. She has heaps of information on the area and things to see and do. While we were there we were fortunate to attend an unveiling of an historical storyboard (created by Peggy) and join the community in a talk about the history of the beach and go on a great hike. Peggy's place is beautiful inside and out but I think the greatest part of Harbour Couture and Southport is its people. From Peggy and Viv to the Avery Family - we were welcome with open arms. It's a place we will not soon forget. Hoping to go back for a third visit.
